Welcome to Gemini! In this overview, I'll describe the governance, operations, and capabilities of the Gemini telescopes. I'll also describe Gemini's vision and plans for the future. Gemini is very adaptable and has multiple ways to apply for time, multiple ways to collect your data, and multiple instrument capabilities ready for your observations. Gemini also runs a wide-reaching program to develop and improve our instrumentation capabilities. We run an upgrade program for our existing instruments that includes an annual public call for proposals, a visitor instrument program that brings instruments like IGRINS to our telescopes for short to semi-permanent runs, and a facility program that provides entirely new instruments like GHOST and SCORPIO to Gemini for full public use. Through these programs, you can interact with Gemini in a number of ways to support your scientific needs in the most efficient way possible.
K-GMT Science Program, operated by Center for Large Telescopes (CfLAT) in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), aims to promote the scientific researches by providing the access to the observational facilities such as 4-8m class telescopes and specialized instruments. In 2016, we plan to make various instruments with MMT and Gemini Observatory as well as IGRINS with 2.7m HJS Telescope in McDonald Observatory available to Korean Astronomical Community. We will present the current status and future prospect as well as some early results made from the K-GMT Science Program in past years.
Construction of the 'Two-degree Field' (2dF) instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) is now virtually complete and commissioning is well underway. The key components are described. Several recent milestones are reported, including the first scientific results. Future prospects and plans are discussed.
ASTRO-F is the first Japanese dedicated infrared astronomical satellite which will be launched in 2005FY and is now in the final stage of the development. ASTRO-F is a 70 cm aperture cryogenically cooled telescope and designed for the infrared survey with much higher sensitivity and angular resolution than IRAS. We present the current status of the mission, focal plane instruments, and the observation plan now being discussed.
Starting with the observation of sunspots in 1987, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has developed and installed various ground-based instruments for space weather research in Korea. Recently, SNIPE and CODEX are also being developed as space-based instruments. Expansion of the observation area and simultaneous observation have become important in the study of space weather. We have started Next-Generation Space Weather Observation Network Project this year. In order to establish a solar observation network, we planned to develop the Next Solar Telescope (NxST) which is a solar imaging spectrograph, and to install three NxST in the northern hemisphere. And we also planned to develop the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Observation System (TIMOS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and Geomagnetic packages, and install them in about ten sites over the world, for the purpose of establishing a global observation network for the near-earth space weather. We can take simultaneously observed space weather data in the global area, and are expecting it will play an important role in the international community for space weather research. We also have a strategy to secure observational technologies necessary for big space missions in the future, through this project.
The latest scientific highlights obtained with the Subaru telescope are given together with its current status and on-going instrumentation. We have been successfully operating the telescope and 8 observatory instruments (including an adaptive optics system) since January 1999, when the first light was accomplished. Open-use of Subaru began in December 2000. Subaru has a unique capability of its prime focus among other 8-10 meter class telescopes and has an excellent imaging performance as a result of its sophisticated active optics combined with the high stability of the sky at Mauna Kea. Scientific highlights are given on the discoveries of the most distant galaxies, spiral structure on a protoplanetary disk around AB Aur, and planetesimal belts in the debris disk around $\beta$ Pic. Brief summaries are given for three new instruments: the Multi-Object Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS), 188 element adaptive optics system, and Fiber Multi-Object Spectrograph (FMOS)
Through KASI, Korean astronomers will have access to the Gemini Observatory starting in 2015. Gemini operates two optical/infrared 8m-class telescopes: one on the northern hemisphere in Hawaii, one on the southern hemisphere in Chile. Both are equipped with state of the art instruments and adaptive optics systems that will be presented. Gemini also offers the opportunity for instrument development and welcomes visiting instruments. In terms of operations, Gemini offers to its partners three ways of applying for time: through semester-basis calls for standard programs, through yearly calls for Large and Long Programs, and through monthly calls for fast turnaround programs. Gemini operates in queue mode (observing for the principal investigators and allowing flexibility in the time domain), as well as in the classical visitor mode (where principal investigators come to the telescope). I will explain the requirements and advantages of all these modes as well as a full update on the Gemini Observatory.
In this study, we explore and catalog Korean astronomical heritages that are known to be preserved in foreign countries. We exclude old astronomical books from the catalog because they have been well studied and exist in numbers far too large for the scope of this study. From various documents and online collections, we find a total of 38 Korean astronomical heritages in six countries: 10, 11, and 14 items from the UK, France, and Japan, respectively, and 1 item from Germany, the US, and China each. These include items that are suspected to be of Chinese heritage and items of unconfirmed possession status. We divide the astronomical heritages primarily into two groups: time-keeping instruments (18 items) and astronomical charts (20 items). In this paper, we briefly review them according to country. We believe that this study provides a foundation for further detailed studies on each item, such as the Gujang-Cheonsang-Yeolcha-Bunya-Jido (舊藏天象列次分野之圖) preserved in the Library of Congress, United States.
Astronomy education and research can benefit from a high performance telescope that is easily accessible in campus. Such a facility allows hands-on education of observations, small research projects, test of new instruments, and time-domian study of astronomical phenomena. Recently, SNU reconstructed a 40-year old observatory (also known as 구천문대), and established the new SNU Astronomical Observatory (SAO) on that site. On 2018 March 27, the 1-m optical telescope was successfully installed at SAO. Since then, this telescope has been producing wonderful images. This poster will give an overview of the 1-m telescope, and its performance.
