  • Large field spectrographs are severely influenced by atmospheric refraction. LAMOST is a large field multi-object spectroscopy telescope with $5^{\circ}$ field of view, f/5 focus ratio and 20m focal length. There will be 4000 fibers simultaneous on it's $\phi$1.75m focal plane. Here we discuss the atmospheric refraction effects on LAMOST in two hands. One is the effect of differential refraction across the field, another is the effect of atmospheric dispersion. According to the calculation, we find that: 1. The largest deviation from center within the field is 4.;32" during a 1.5-hour integration at $80^{\circ}$ declination. 2. The directions of deviation are complex, so the deviations can't be decreased by rotating the field. We also give out the atmospheric dispersions.

  • Effect of magnetic field on the thermal instability is studied in the radiatively cooling region behind an interstellar shock of moderate propagation velocity (${\sim}10\;km/sec$). It is shown that the presence of interstellar magnetic field of a few micro gauss is very effective in preventing the thermal instability from building-up density concentration. In the absence of magnetic field, the shock-induced thermal instability amplifies preshock density inhomogeneity by more than an order of magnitude. However, in the presence of magnetic field, the amplified density contrast is shown to be only a factor 2.

  • The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) treasury project. The COSMOS aims to perform a 2 square degree imaging survey of an equatorial field in I(F814W) band, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Such a wide field survey, combined with ground-based photometric and spectroscopic data, is essential to understand the interplay between large scale structure, evolution and formation of galaxies and dark matter. In 2004, we have obtained high-quality, broad band images of the COSMOS field (B, V, r', i', and z') using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, and we have started our new optical multi-band program, COSMOS-21 in 2005. Here, we present a brief summary of the current status of the COSMOS project together with contributions from the Subaru Telescope. Our future Subaru program, COSMOS-21, is also discussed briefly.

  • We present wide-field near-IR imaging polarimetry of 30 Doradus, using the InfraRed Survey Facility(IRSF) 1.4 m telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory. We obtained polarimetry data in J, H, and Ks bands using the JHKs-simultaneous imaging polarimeter SIRPOL. 30 Doradus is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud(LMC) and it is the most active starburst region known in the Local group of galaxies. 30 Doradus is one of the best field to examine the behavior of the interstellar medium and star-formation mechanism under different conditions. We will investigate the structure of magnetic field in 30 Doradus region.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out learning content for astronomical observation that could perform astronomical programs regardless of weather conditions as a case for the present conditions of astronomical observation and the methods of new education for astronomical observation, and to suggest the methods of synchronized multiple astronomical observation and actual cases using the Internet network. The results are as follows. First, the method of galaxy-oriented astronomical education helped those attempting to approach astronomy academically for the first time grasp useful concepts as to the astronomical space, and let them look at the space in an objective sense, which was effective in forming cosmic structure and concepts. Second, the administration curriculum of astronomical observation team was related to data that systematically contained annual astronomical education concerning the operation of astronomical observation teams; thus, they could be suggested as beneficial teaching materials to the teachers who wanted to organize a school club meeting. Third, it has been noted that the level of students' satisfaction in p2d program and MSO program was very high, and they turned out to be effective learning methods that could be implemented even in times of rain when it would not be possible to conduct astronomical observation activities.

  • We conducted an extremely wide field survey of z ${\~}$ 6 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) to precisely derive their bright end surface density overcoming the bias due to cosmic variance. We selected out LBG candidates in the Subaru/ XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field (SXDS) over the total of ${\~}1.0\;deg^2$ sky area down to $z_{AB} = 26.0 ({\ge}3{\sigma},\;2'.0 aperture)$ using i' - z' > 1.5 color cut. This sample alone is likely to be contaminated by M/L/T dwarfs, low-z elliptical galaxies, and z ${\~}$ 6 quasars. To eliminate these interlopers, we estimated their numbers using an exponential disk star count model, catalogs of old ellipticals in the SXDS and other field, and a z${\~}$6 quasar luminosity function. The finally derived surface density of z ${\~}$ 6 LBGs was 165 $mag^{-1}\;deg^{-2}$ down to $z_{AB}$ = 26.0 and shows good agreement with previous results from the narrower field survey of HST GOODS.

  • The importance of multiwavelength astronomical surveys is discussed in the context of galaxy evolution. The AKARI Deep Field South (ADF-S) is a new, well placed survey field that is already the subject of studies at a wide range of wavelengths. A number of ADF-S observational programmes are discussed and the prospects for the ADF-S as a future resource for extragalactic astronomy is explored.
