Evaluation of Performance and Development of Control Method of a New Electric Power Steering System(EPS-TT) (새로운 전동식 동력 조향 장치 (EPS-TT)의 성능 평가 및 제어방법 개발)

  • A new column type electric power steering system (EPS-TT) is proposed in this study. The remarkable features of EPS-TT are its opto-isolated torque sensor and assist torque control methodology. EPS-TT uses a uni-directional motor and two clutches. Full order and simplified models for EPS-TT are developed to evaluate the EPS-TT. A full car model is also used to investigate the vehicle responses. A PID control logic is designed to control the torque of the assist motor. Various sinusoidal inputs are applied to the system and the resulting performances are analyzed. The results prove that the performances achieved by the EPS-TT are improved compared to those of a conventional EPS-TT across the frequency domain. In addition, it is inexpensive and easy to control the motor. The results of the full order steering system model are similar to those simplified model, but the vehicle responses are slightly different.

  • On-center handling feel indices are the important numerical factors that meaning performance of manuability and stability felt by drivers. They should be considered to suspension design. The major factor that affect to these indices is the shape of assist torque curve. This paper presents the variables that meaning the shape of the assist torque curve and analyze the effect of each variables. And using interaction formulas, it is proposed that the method to extract the variables that satisfy the goal indices. The result of simulation that applied assist torque curve extracted by the method demonstrate the capability of this method with error under 8%.

  • A lane change maneuver which has a high driver cognitive workload and skills sometimes leads to severe traffic accidents. In this study, the Advanced Lane Change Assist System (ALCAS) was developed to assist with the automatic lane changes in merging sections which is mainly based on an automatic control algorithm for detecting an available gap, determining the Optimal Lane Change Start Point (OLCSP) in various traffic conditions, and positioning the merging vehicle at the OLCSP safely by longitudinal automatic controlling. The analysis of lane change behavior and modeling of fundamental lane change feature were performed for determining the default parameters and the boundary conditions of the algorithm. The algorithm was composed of six steps with closed-loop. In order to confirm the algorithm performance, numerical scenario tests were performed in various surrounding vehicles conditions. Moreover, feasibility of the developed system was verified in microscopic traffic simulation(VISSIM 5.3 version). The results showed that merging vehicles using the system had a tendency to find the OLCSP readily and precisely, so improved merging performance was observed when the system was applied. The system is also effective even during increases in vehicle volume of the mainline.

  • In this paper, we propose the organization of a sensor system and user's intent detection algorithm for walking assist rehabilitation robots. The main purpose of walking assist rehabilitation robots is assisting SCI patients to walk in normal environment. To use walking assist rehabilitation robot in normal environment, it is needed to consider various factors about user's safety and detection of user's intent and so on. For these purposes, we have analyzed the use case of rehabilitation robots and organized the system of sensors for walking assist rehabilitation robots and finally, we have developed the algorithm which is used to detect user's intent for those. We applied our proposal method in the rehabilitation robot, ROBIN, and verified their effectiveness by normal, not patient.

  • In this paper, we present a control method of mobile power assist systems. Most of mobile power assist systems have a heavy base for preventing easy tumbling, so continual movement of the base during operations causes high energy consumption and gives the high risk of human injury. Furthermore, the slow dynamics of the base limits the frequency bandwidth of the whole system. Thus we propose a cooperation control method of the mobile base and manipulator, which removes the unnecessary movements of the base. In our scheme, the mobile base does not move until the center of gravity(C.G) of the system goes outside a safety region. When C.G. reaches the boundary of the safety region, the base starts moving to recover the manipulator's initial configuration. By varying the parameters of a human impedance controller, the operator is warned by a force feedback that C.G. is on the marginal safety region. Our scheme is implemented by assigning a nonlinear mass-damper-spring impedance to the tip of the manipulator.   • A mechanical circulatory support system is a life-saving option for treating acute severe respiratory failure or cardiac failure. There are currently a few types of assist devices and the Twin-Pulse Life Support (T-PLS) system is a kind of pulsatile pump. We report here on three patients with severe life threatening cardiopulmonary dysfunction who had the T-PLS system used as an assist device. The indications for applying the T-PLS system were continuing respiratory or cardiac failure in spite of maximal ventilatory and inotropic support. There were two patients with acute respiratory failure due to infection and one patient with cardiac failure due to acute myocarditis. One respiratory failure patient and one cardiac failure patient survived after applying the T-PLS system for 3 days and 5 days, respectively. The T-PLS system is useful as an assist device and it should be considered before multi-organ failure occurs.

  • In this paper, we present a neural network identification and a control of highly complicated nonlinear left ventricular assist device(LVAD) system with a pneumatically driven mock circulation system. Generally, the LVAD system needs to compensate for nonlinearities. It is necessary to apply high performance control techniques. Fortunately, the neural network can be applied to control of a nonlinear dynamic system by learning capability. In this study, we identify the LVAD system with neural network identification(NNI). Once the NNI has learned the dynamic model of the LVAD system, the other network, called neural network controller(NNC), is designed for a control of the LVAD system. The ability and effectiveness of identifying and controlling the LVAD system using the proposed algorithm will be demonstrated by computer simulation.

A Novel System with EMG-controlled FES Enhanced Gait Function and Energy Expenditure for Older Adults

  • Objective: This study was conducted to analyze the effect of wearable Electromyography-controlled functional electrical stimulation (EMG-controlled FES) System on Gait Function and cardiopulmonary metabolic efficiency during walking in older adults. Design: Cross-section study Methods: Total 22 older adult participants suitable to selection criteria of this study participated in this study. The EMG-controlled FES System, which functions as a wearable physical activity assist FES system was used. All participations performed randomly assigned two conditions (Non-FES assist [NFA], FES assist [FA]) of walking. In all conditions, spatio-temporal parameters and kinematics and kinetics parameters during walking was collected via 3D motion capture system and 6 minutes walking test (6MWT) and metabolic cost during walking and stairs climbing was collected via a portable metabolic device (COSMED K5, COSMED Srl, Roma, Italy). Results: In Spatio-temporal parameters aspects, The EMG-controlled FES system significantly improved gait functions measurements of older adults with sarcopenia at walking in comparison to the NFA condition (P<0.05). Hip, knee and ankle joint range of motion increased at walking in FA condition compared to the NFA condition (P<0.05). In the FA condition, moment and ground reaction force was changed like normal gait during walking of older adults in comparison to the NFA condition (P<0.05). The EMG-controlled FES system significantly reduced net cardiopulmonary metabolic energy cost, net energy expenditure measurement at stairs climbing (P<0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that EMG-controlled FES is a potentially useful gait-assist system for improving gait function by making joint range of motion and moment properly.

  • In recent days, vehicles have become equipped with electric systems that assist and help drivers driving safe by reducing possible accidents. LDWS(Lane Departure Warning System) and LKAS(Lane Keeping Assistant System) are involved in assist systems, especially for lateral motion of vehicles. Sudden and inattentive lateral motion of vehicles due to drivers' fatigue, illness, inattention, and drowsiness are major causes of accidents in highway. LDWS and LKAS provide drivers with warnings or assisting power to reduce any possibilities of accidents. In order to prevent or minimize the possibilities of accidents, lateral motion control of vehicles has been introduced in this research. DGPS/RTK(Differential Global Positioning System/Real Time Kinematics) and GIS(Geographic Information System) have been used to obtain the current position of vehicles and decide when activate controlling lateral motion of vehicles. The presented lateral motion control has been validated with actual vehicle tests.
