Biomass and net production of the three 46-to 52-year-old natural Queycus mongojica stands were investigated in Namsan Park at Seoul. Total above- and belowground biomass including understory vegetation for the three stands ranged from 14776t1ha to 278.48t/ha and total net production ranged from 6.96t/ha/yr to 11.11t/yr. Understory vegetation biomass for the three stands ranged from $0.14\%\;to\;1.14\%$ of total biomass. Biomass accumulation ratio for the three stands ranged from 20.72 to 25.07 and net assimilation ratio as an index of foliage photosynthetic efficiency ranged from 2.79 to 3.34. Net production and net assimilation ratio of this study stands which were located in Namsan Park of central Seoul were low compared to the natural Quercus mongojica forests in other districts in Korea.
This study presents physiological rates of oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, feeding rates, O/N ratio and assimilation efficiency of the blood cockle, Scapharca subcrenata, determined from specimens collected in Yeoja bay on the south coast of Korea. Physiological parameters were measured monthly under static, laboratory controlled conditions with ambient conditions, and measurements were performed seasonally in order to estimate scope for growth and its probable sources of variation. Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates have been increased as temperature increased with the highest value of August, 2008. Feeding rate was the highest during April whereas the lowest was during August which is a period of gametogenesis with minimum biomass of phytoplankton around sampling area. Assimilation efficiency was not significantly different seasonally and O/N ratio decreased during July to August. The scope for growth was negative during high temperature months(July to August), reflecting the high temperature and low feeding rate, and had its highest positive values during spring and autumn. Data on the physiological parameters and scope for growth of Scapharca subcrenata obtained in this study will be used to assess the carrying capacity for blood cockle cultivation.
The modified Kling-Gupta efficiency fusion method to merge actual evapotranspiration was proposed and compared with the simple Taylor skill's score method using Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), MODIS Global Evapotranspiration Project (MOD16), and the flux tower on three different land cover types over the Korean peninsula and China. In the results of the weights estimated from two actual evapotranspiration merging techniques (i.e., STS and KGF), the weights of reanalysis data (i.e, GLDAS and GLEAM) in cropland and grassland showed similar performance, while the results of weights are different according to the merging techniques in forest. Both two merging techniques showed better results than original dataset in grassland and forest. However, there were no improvement in cropland compared to the other land cover types. The results of the KGF method slightly improved compared to those of the STS in grassland and forest.
Larvae of the freshwater shrimp, Macrobrachium nipponense were reared in the laboratory at constant condition $(25^{\circ}C,\;7\%o)$, and their feeding rate, oxygen consumption rate, and growth rate were measured in regular intervals of time during larval development. Regression equations describing rates of feeding, growth and respiration as functions of time during individual larval molt cycles were inserted in a simulation model in order to analyse time-dependent patterns of variation as well as in bioenergetic efficiencies. Absolute values for feeding, growth, respiration and assimilation showed clear changes during the molt cycle, The absolute and specific values of respiration (R: R/C) showed small variation during the individual molt cycles. Significance of respiration in relation to growth (G) increased within the carbon budget, respiration rate (R/C) outbalanced growth rate (G/C) in late premolt. When the portion of metabolizable carbon is respired (R/G), metabolic coefficient was < 1 (i.e. R$(K_2)$ decreased concurrently, In cumulative carbon budget, total feeding was $491.54\;{\mu}g$ C/ind., assimilation was $85.3\%$, respiration was $47.7\%$, and growth was $37.6\%$ from hatching to postlarval stage.
Ruminants possess the capacity to digest very large amounts of starch. However, in many cases diets approach 60% starch and even small inefficiencies present opportunities for energetic losses. Ruminal starch digestion is typically 75-80% of starch intake. On average, 35-60% of starch entering the small intestine is degraded. Of the fraction that escapes small-intestinal digestion, 35-50% is degraded in the large intestine. The low digestibility in the large intestine and the inability to reclaim microbial cells imposes a large toll on post-ruminal digestive efficiency. Therefore, digestibility in the small intestine must be optimized. The process of starch assimilation in the ruminant is complex and remains an avenue by which increases in production efficiency can be gained. A more thorough description of these processes is needed before we can accurately predict digestion occurring in the small intestine and formulate diets to optimize site of starch digestion.
Plant growth and the two components of respiration, growth and maintenance, were compared between low and high nitrogen applications in hydroponic culture on a high-yielding rice cultivar 'Takanari' (Oryza sativa L.). Grain yield decreased by high nitrogen application, and thus this cultivar has low adaptability to nitrogen. Growth efficiency (GE) and net assimilation rate (NAR) were lower in the high-nitrogen plot. The maintenance coefficient (m) and growth coefficient (g) of dark respiration were 0.0111 $d^{-1}$ and 0.196 in the low-nitrogen plot and 0.0166 $d^{-1}$ and 0.237 in the high-nitrogen plot, respectively. Thus, high nitrogen application increased both g and m. Calculated $R_m$ (maintenance respiration rate) was 70 and 90% of total respiration rate at heading, respectively. The significance of nitrogen adaptability and g was discussed.
In order to observe the factors affecting light utilization efficiency in the canopy of a rice crop grown in reclaimed saline areas in Korea, 22 varieties of rice were cultured at the average salt concentration of 6.05mmhos/cm $25^{\circ}C$, (0.39%) in saline soils and non-saline silty loam soils. The inhibition of tillering ability by salt damage at the maximum tillering stage was greater than to growth in height. A significant direct correlation was observed between both ratios and salt concentration with each variety. In the salty areas the length of the flag leaf of the maturing stage showed a positive correlation with the production of rough rice while other living leaf showed a negative correlation. LAI of maturing stage was less in the salty area than in the non-salty area, while the former showed higher ratio in net assimilation and translocation to head with greater RGR before and after the heading stage.
The effects of growth substrates such as toluene and phenol on cometabolic biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by Burkholderia cepacia G4 were investigated. The dual effects of primary substrate on TCE biodegradation, stimulatory effects of toluene and phenol at low concentrations (0.5∼2 ppm & 0.1∼0.5 ppm, respectively) and a competitive inhibition at high concentration, were observed in batch experiments. These stimulatory effects of toluene and phenol were found to be due to the increments in the amount of reducing power like NADH which could be generated during the assimilation of toluene and phenol as the carbon and energy source. The efficiency of TCE biodegradation in trickling biofilm reactor (TBR) could be also enhanced up to the TCE removal efficiency of 58.1% by the supply of appropriate amounts of phenol (0.94∼4.7 ppm).
Spiny lebbeid shrimp Lebbeus groenlandicus larvae were reared in the laboratory to estimate the energy budget from the zoeal to the post-larval stage. Energy expended by larvae on growth and respiration was determined from values for feeding, growth, molting, and metabolism. We calculated that 16.22 J were used for growth throughout all larval stages. Energy loss during molting was estimated as 1.03 J, and energy used for respiration was estimated as 1.31 J. Energy taken in by feeding was estimated as 77.16 J, while the sum of energies expended in excretion and egestion was 58.61 J. Larvae were estimated to assimilate 24.6% of ingested food as energy and to use ~85% of the assimilated energy for somatic growth. Gross growth efficiency ($K_1$) and net growth efficiency ($K_2$) were shown to be ~22% and 93%, respectively. Maintenance costs of respiration were estimated as ~9.7% of assimilated energy.
The energy budget of the larvae of pandalid shrimp, Pandalopsis japonica, reared in the laboratory from zoea to post-larva was investigated. Energy used during the growth of the shrimp larvae was calculated daily for feeding, growth, molting, and metabolism. The total energy used was 16.2 J for the entire larval stage. Molting energy loss was estimated at a total 1.03 J. Energy used for respiration was estimated at a total of 1.85 J. The intake energy by feeding reached a total of 77.69 J. The total sum of energies used by excretion and egestion was 58.61 J. Larvae assimilated 24.57% of ingested food and used 84.91% for somatic growth. The gross growth efficiency ($K_1$) was 22.19% for the entire larval stage, and the net growth efficiency ($K_2$) was 90.31%. Maintenance costs were estimated at 9.69% of assimilated energy for the entire larval stage.
