Impact of Employing Mass Customization in Shipbuilding (조선에서 대량 맞춤화의 영향)

  • One of the goals of mass customization is to permit changes in the product to meet specific customer requirements without substantially impacting the cost or delivery schedule. In large assembly manufacturing industries, such as shipbuilding and commercial airplane production, customization takes place by changing components and/or modules, sometimes called interim products. Using shipbuilding as a case study, it is possible to study the impact of such changes using mass customization principles on the schedule. In large assembly manufacturing, mass customization changes would cause changes in engineering time and production time, based on the amount of change required by the customization. This work first proposes a structure for implementing mass customization in shipbuilding and then uses simulation of a simplified, theoretical shipbuilding process to evaluate the impacts of various levels of change on delivery performance.

Development of a general framework of resonance self-shielding treatment for broad-spectrum reactor lattice physics calculation

  • Some core designs integrate high-enriched fuel and moderator materials to enhance neutron utilization. This combination results in a broad spectrum within the system, posing challenges in resonance calculation. This paper introduces a general framework to realize resonance self-shielding treatment in broad-spectrum fuel lattice problems. The framework consists of three components. First, a new energy group structure is devised to support resonance calculation in the entire energy range and capture spectral transition and thermalization effects during eigenvalue calculation. Second, the subgroup method based on narrow approximation is selected as a universal method to perform resonance calculation. Finally, transport equations for each fissionable region are solved for neutron flux to collapse the fission spectrum. The proposed method is verified against fast, intermediate, and thermal spectrum pin cell problems and an assembly problem featuring a fast-thermal coupled spectrum. Numerical results affirm the accuracy of the proposed method in handling these scenarios, with eigenvalue errors below 154 pcm for pin cell problems and 106 pcm for the assembly problem. The verification results revealed that the proposed method enables accurate resonance self-shielding treatment for broad-spectrum problems.

A Data Burst Assembly Algorithm in Optical Burst Switching Networks

  • Presently, optical burst switching (OBS) technology is under study as a promising solution for the backbone of the optical Internet in the near future because OBS eliminates the optical buffer problem at the switching node with the help of no optical/electro/optical conversion and guarantees class of service without any buffering. To implement the OBS network, there are a lot of challenging issues to be solved. The edge router, burst offset time management, and burst assembly mechanism are critical issues. In addition, the core router needs data burst and control header packet scheduling, a protection and restoration mechanism, and a contention resolution scheme. In this paper, we focus on the burst assembly mechanism. We present a novel data burst generation algorithm that uses hysteresis characteristics in the queueing model for the ingress edge node in optical burst switching networks. Simulation with Poisson and self-similar traffic models shows that this algorithm adaptively changes the data burst size according to the offered load and offers high average data burst utilization with a lower timer operation. It also reduces the possibility of a continuous blocking problem in the bandwidth reservation request, limits the maximum queueing delay, and minimizes the required burst size by lifting up data burst utilization for bursty input IP traffic.

  • $CaCO_3$ crystalline structures having novel assemblies were in situ fabricated as analogs of naturally occurring proteins and polysaccharides for biomineralization. The calcite crystal was mineralized in a poly(vinyl alcohol)-$Ca^{2+}$ complex film immersed in a $Na_2CO_3$ solution containing poly(aspartic acid). The morphology and size of the $CaCO_3$ crystals were tuned by varying the concentration of poly(aspartic acid). The mechanisms of their nucleation orientation and formation were investigated experimentally and through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in order to obtain a better understanding of the interactions between the polymers and the crystal at the molecular level. Both the MD results and experimental results indicate that the interaction between PVA and calcite mainly depends on the concentration of the polymer. The novel approach proposed herein for the fabrication of inorganic crystalline assembly structures can be used to fabricate precise crystalline structures.

  • Nowadays, manufacturing industry has been making its effort not only for productivity elevation but also for cost reduction in order to survive in the global market which is more and more challenging. In this paper, the method for planning of digital manufacturing system is proposed and door trim assembly system is determined as the subject of our research. First of all, the process sequence is generated based on the product analysis. And, the static and dynamic relationships between system components are represented using IDEF0 and UML model. The working time is estimated through the regression analysis based on MODAPTS method. According to the system configuration strategy, initial concept system layout is implemented 3D virtual environment. The problems caused by bad working motions are detected and modified through the ergonomic analysis using RULA method. According to proposed procedure, digital door trim assembly system is implemented in DLEMIA.

Mechanical analysis of the bow deformation of a row of fuel assemblies in a PWR core

  • Fuel assembly (FA) bow in pressurized water reactor (PWR) cores is considered to be a complex process with a large number of influencing mechanisms and several unknowns. Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses are a common way to assess the predictability of such complex phenomena. To perform such analyses, a structural model of a row of 15 FAs in the reactor core is implemented with the finite-element code ANSYS Mechanical APDL. The distribution of lateral hydraulic forces within the core row is estimated based on a two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics model with porous media, assuming symmetric or asymmetric core inlet and outlet flow profiles. The influence of the creep rate on the bow amplitude is tested based on different creep models for guide tubes and fuel rods. Different FA initial states are considered: fresh FAs or FAs with higher burnup, which may be initially straight or exhibit an initial bow from previous cycles. The simulation results over one reactor cycle demonstrate that changes in the creep rate and the hydraulic conditions may have a considerable impact on the bow amplitudes and the bow patterns. A good knowledge of the specific creep behavior and the hydraulic conditions is therefore crucial for making reliable predictions.

Digital engineering models for prefabricated bridge piers

  • Data-driven engineering is crucial for information delivery between design, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of prefabricated structures. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) is a critical methodology for prefabricated bridge structures. In this study, a novel concept of digital engineering model that combined existing knowledge of DfMA with object-oriented parametric modeling technologies was developed. Three-dimensional (3D) geometry models and their data models for each phase of a construction project were defined for information delivery. Digital design models were used for conceptual design, including aesthetic consideration and possible variation during fabrication and assembly. The seismic performance of a bridge pier was evaluated by linking the design parameters to the calculated moment-curvature curves. Control parameters were selected to consider the tolerance control and revision of the digital models. Digitalized fabrication of the prefabricated members was realized using the digital fabrication model with G-code for a concrete printer or a robot. The fabrication error was evaluated and the design digital models were updated. The revised fabrication models were used in the preassembly simulation to guarantee constructability. For the maintenance of the bridge, the as-built information was defined for the prefabricated bridge piers. The results of this process revealed that data-driven information delivery is crucial for lifecycle management of prefabricated bridge piers.

Yet an organization is more than a collection of individuals. It is something more than the sum of its Parts: it exists as an entity with its own definable objectives. The management process comprise those activities or functions that managers must perform to effectively carry out this asizned role. However, now that O.R. and system approach has been generalized and the assembly system of hard ware or soft ware through computerization is being improved, the systematization of scientific organization is urgently needed.   • Automobile door-handle is assembled with three parts that are base, skin and cover. Over-molding processing makes assembly of the base and skin. The skin part that was made by PVC polymer has various thickness. Plastic injection molding simulation of part including significant changed thickness as skin is an inaccuracy comparing with real injection molding. To solve this problem, two commercial flow prediction software that are Moldflow MPI and MAPS 3D were used in this study. Simulations were conducted for three types mesh. Taguchi method was applied for simulation experiments. It will be need to compare with simulation results and real over-molding behavior in the near future.

  • In this paper, we perform a ANSYS simulation of assembly structure composed of three parts, bolt, nut, and coil spring, under the loading of a screw torque 640~800 ($N{\cdot}m$) derived from the given bolt tensile strength 10.9, which allows us to investigate a lock-nut mechanism for the prevention of bolt-loosening after three parts are fastened. And also we investigate the safety factor of each component with effective stress distribution obtained from the simulation, which enables us to estimate the structural safety of a new lock-nut structure. Both simulation and investigation shown in this paper will contribute to the development of a new lock nut structure.
