  • Dynaflect is known as a very effective equipment for the structural evaluation and rehabilitation of Pavements. It is increasingly used in the design, construction and maintenance of the various pavement structures. In this study, two-layered asphalt concrete pavements with the various moduli and thicknesses are selected as the analytical models. The deflections on the surface corresponding to sensor positions of Dynaflect are analyzed utilizing the multi-layered elastic computer program. From the study of the characteristics of spreadability (SPR), it is found that the SPRs are unique when the moduli ratio of pavements EIIE2 are identical. It is also found that the SPR has a linear relationship with the logarithm of moduli ratio ElIE2 in the range of 1.0 to 50. The regression equation to predict the moduli ratio ElyE2 from the SPR and the pavement taickness h is proposed. A series of charts to estimate the elastic moduli of two-layered asphalt concrete pavement system are also developed.

  • Structural pavement analysis considering lateral loads of moving vehicle was carried out in order to simulate passing vehicle loads under various interface conditions. To verify of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of layer interface effect parameters, this study compared outputs by using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program and KENLAYER, multi-layer elastic analysis as vertical load was applied to the surface of asphalt pavements. Pavement performance depending on interface conditions was quantitatively evaluated and fundamental study of layer interface effect parameters was performed in this study. As results of the study, if only vertical loads of moving vehicle is applied, subdivision of either fully bonded or fully unbonded is enough to indicate interface effect parameters. On the other hand, when lateral loads are applied with vertical loads, pavement behavior and performance are greatly changed with respect to layer interface conditions. The thinner thickness of the asphalt layer is and the smaller elastic moduli of the asphalt layer is, the more pavement behavior is influenced by interface conditions. In addition, regression analysis equation analytically computing tensile strain which was considered thicknesses and elastic moduli of the asphalt layer and layer interface effect parameters at the bottom of the asphalt layer was presented using database from numerical analyses on national pavement model sections.

  • Failure criteria for asphalt concrete pavements are developed combining the AASHTO design equation and the multi-layered elastic theory. Thickness range including typical layer thicknesses of four-layer Korea highway structures are employed for pavement structure models. Total of 2430 pavement models with different layer thicknesses and moduli are analyzed. Models with crushed stone and asphalt stabilized base courses are equally included in the analysis. Number of load repetition and the maximum tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt layer are computed from the AASHTO design equation with terminal PSI=2.5 and multi-layered elastic computer program, SINELA, respectively. Failure criteria are developed through the regression analysis. From the analysis, failure criteria for the asphalt concrete pavements with 50% and 95% reliability levels are developed. It is found that the failure criterion of 95% reliability level gives similar results with existing fatigue failure criteria whose terminal performance condition is crack development when compared in a graphical form an equation to estimate failure criterion for a specific reliability level is also proposed.

  • To examine adequacy of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of layer interface conditions, this study compared outputs of finite element analysis and multi-layer elastic analysis as vertical load was applied to the surface of asphalt pavements. Structural pavement analysis considering influence of a horizontal load was also carried out in order to simulate passing vehicle loads under various interface conditions using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program. • Structural integrity assessment technique for pavement system is studied considering the uncertainties among the material properties. The artificial neural networks technique is applied for the inverse analysis to estimate the elastic modulus based on the measured deflections from the FWD test. A computer code based on the spectral element method was developed for the accurate and fast analysis of the multi-layered soil structures, and the developed program was used for generating the training and testing patterns for the neural network. Neural networks was applied to estimate the elastic modulus of pavement system using the maximum deflections with and without the uncertainties in the material properties. It was found that the estimation results by the conventiona1 neural networks were very poor when there exist the uncertainties and the estimation results could be significantly improved by adopting the proposed method for generating training patterns considering the uncertainties among material properties.

  • Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is abundant substitute for natural aggregate in many areas. It is obtained by crushing of old road pavements in milling machine during rehabilitation and reconstruction process. In this study, reclaimed asphalt pavement mortars (RAPM) have been produced with different cement dosages and replacement ratios. The destructive and nondestructive tests have been conducted on specimens to determine physical and mechanical properties of RAPM. The free and restrained shrinkage tests on RAPM have been conducted to predict fractural behavior of mortars. The aim of the shrinkage tests was to delay crack formation and improve strain capacity of mortars before cracking. The results showed that RAPM exhibits lower elasticity modulus; however the tensile capacity was improved for deformation before cracking.

  • The use of sustainable technologies such as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), and/or recycled materials is expected to positively affect the performance of concrete mixtures. However, it is imperative to qualify and implement such mixtures in practice, if the required specifications of their intended application are met. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) containing sustainable technologies. Twelve mixes were prepared with different combinations of fly ash, slag, and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). Fresh and hardened concrete properties were measured, as expected the inclusion of the sustainable technologies affected both fresh and hardened concrete properties. Analysis of the experimental data indicated that inclusion of RAP not only reduces the ultimate strength, but it also affected the compressive strength development rate. The addition of RAP to mixes showed a consistent effect, with a drop in strength after 3, 14, and 28 days as the RAP content increased from 0 to 50 %. However, most of the mixes satisfied SCC fresh properties requirements, including mixes with up to 50 % RAP. Moreover, several mixes satisfied compressive strength requirement for pavements and bridges, those mixes included relatively high percentages of SCMs and RAP.
