A Study on Properties of Retentive Asphalt Concrete (보수성 아스팔트 콘크리트의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was retentive material into the porosities of the permeable asphalt concrete, we developed retentive asphalt concrete which can absorb water in rain and decrease the temperature of the pavement through the vaporization of rainwater. The experimental results showed that the maximum stability appeared in the 5.0% types of both AP-5 and SBS PMA. Between these two types, the maximum stability of the asphalt with AP-5 was 480kg, which means it met the stability requirement for walkways but didn't meet the requirement for roadways. On the other hand, the maximum stability of the asphalt concrete with SBS PMA was 676kg, which was 176 kg higher than the requirement for roadways(500kg) and satisfy the requirement of KS. The retentive material was 56.4% in the type of the retentive material with 30% diatomaceous earth, 66.6% in 50% type, 87.5% in 70% type. In the aspect of thermal properties, the retentive asphalt concrete can lower the surface temperature by about 15 degrees lower than the normal asphalt concrete can. This effect could be made by the evaporation cooling effect and the surface albedo. It should be noted that the evaporation cooling effect cools it by about 10 degrees and the surface albedo by about 5 degrees.

  • More than sixty percentage of highway in South Korea were constructed by concrete pavements and more than half of the concrete pavements were twenty years or older. The most of highway have difficulty in providing detour due to the traffic and road condition of South Korea. So far, asphalt concrete has been used for the overlay of aged cement concrete pavement. However, the frequent early damage and maintenance of typical asphalt overlay due to repetitive maintenance causes inconvenience of road users and expensive costs. It is necessary to investigate the factors affecting the performance of asphalt concrete overlay to improve the performance of asphalt overlay. However, the performance data of asphalt concrete overlay in South Korea does not exist. In this research, to investigate on the factors affecting the life of asphalt concrete overlay was attempted based on statistical analysis of the performance data of asphalt concrete overlay included in LTPP (Long-Term Pavement Performance) Database of U.S.A.

Effect of Inorganic Impurities on the Properties of Lean Concrete (재생골재중에 포함된 이물질이 빈배합콘크리트 물성에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effect of inorganic impurities such as clay bricks and asphalt concrete in recycled aggregate on the properties of lean concrete. The optimized moisture content of lean concrete with clay bricks increased, because the absorption ratio of clay bricks is high. On the other hand, lean concrete with asphalt concrete produced an opposite result owing to low absorption ratio. The results showed that inorganic impurities did not have a significant effect on compressive .strength of lean concrete containing below 30$\%$ clay bricks and below 10$\%$ asphalt concrete.

Dynamic Analysis of Asphalt Concrete Pavement Structure

  • A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement.   • This study is basic research to improve quality of asphalt concrete mixture, to preserve environment, and to recycle waste vinly. The mixing method and proper content of waste vinyl were determined through preliminary mix design. This study performed mix designs using 2 type gradations of aggregate in addtion content of wate vinly. Marshall stability at optimum asphalt content of asphalt concrete mixture addtin wate vinly was satisfied with the specification of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation , and its values indicated that dense grade asphalt concrete mixture containing waste vinyl were higher than common dense grade mixture (control). From this study, it was confirmed that addtion of waste vinyl improved quality of asphalt concrete mixture.

  • More than sixty percentage of highway in South Korea were constructed by concrete pavements and more than half of the concrete pavements were twenty years or older. Maintenance and rehabilitation of aged cement concrete pavements required early transportation opening due to difficulty of preparing bypass roads, given South Korea's transportation condition and so far, mostly asphalt concrete overlay has been used. However, asphalt concrete pavement maintenance and rehabilitation is costly because of early damage and at the same time, it causes inconvenience to the road users. Recently, as an effective method of rehabilitation for aged cement concrete pavement, bonded concrete overlay is being attempted. Therefore, utilizing various data on year-by-year basis is needed to rationally analyze of the damage on asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay is necessary. However, in South Korea database of Serviceability damage on asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay does not exist. In this research, performance is evaluated by the LTPP (Long Term Pavement Performance) Data of U.S.A, which accumulated various damage data of asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay. However, the pattern distress of asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay are different. Therefore, the pavement distress data of each section is collected into database and distress are calculated PCI(Pavement Condition Index) in order to compare life of asphalt concrete overlay and bonded concrete overlay.

  • Recently the quantities of waste asphalt concrete at construction sites have increased greatly, but the maintenance and final disposal is very difficult problem. Therefore, we were faced with a worsening environmental problem brought about illegal measures. One of the most effective recycling method is cold recycling. This method will satisfy treatment and recycling of construction wastes. Also it is very important question in the preservation of environmental and natural resources. So, in this paper, we dealt cold recycling modified asphalt mixtures using emulsified asphalt to concern the effect of adding reclaimed asphalt concrete 30, 40, 50% and using SBR Latex for modified asphalt mixtures.

  • The purpose of this study is to recycle waste concrete and reuse reclaimed asphalt concrete as a concrete coarse aggregate. In this experiment, recycled coarse aggregate was substitute for natural crushed aggregate at the rate of 0, 30, $50\%$, and reclaimed asphalt concrete was substitute for recycled coarse aggregate at the rate of 0, 10, 20, $30\%$. According to the experimental results, as the reclaimed asphalt concrete content has influence on the properties of recycled aggregate concrete such as compressive and tensile strength, the criteria for the substitute ratio should be required to be set.

  • The major distresses in asphalt concrete pavement are rutting and fatigue cracking. Once the distresses are observed on pavement surface, an appropriate rehabilitation method should be found. Usually, asphalt patching or overlay methods are used to improve the pavement performance. The research presents the fundamental study on effective longitudinal rehabilitation methods for asphalt concrete pavements. The rehabilitation method will be applied to rutting that is occurred asphalt Pavement surface course and longitudinal cracking or fatigue cracking with light to moderate distress levels.

Impact of temperature cycling on fracture resistance of asphalt concretes

  • Asphalt pavements are exposed to complex weather conditions and vehicle traffic loads leading to crack initiation and crack propagation in asphalt pavements. This paper presents the impact of weather conditions on fracture toughness of an asphalt concrete, prevalently employed in Ardabil road networks, under tensile (mode I) and shear (mode II) loading. An improved semi-circular bend (SCB) specimen was employed to carry out the fracture experiments. These experiments were performed in two different weather conditions namely fixed and cyclic temperatures. The results showed that consideration of the impact of temperature cycling resulted in decreasing the fracture toughness of asphalt concrete significantly. Furthermore, the fracture toughness was highly affected by loading mode for the both fixed and cyclic temperature conditions studied in this paper. In addition, it was found that the MTS criterion correctly predicts the onset of fracture initiation although this prediction was slightly conservative.
