A major purpose of this study is to develop high modulus asphalt mixtures for perpetual asphalt pavements which can save maintenance cost by increasing the design and performance periods of the pavements. Various physical and mechanical laboratory tests are performed for the high modulus asphalt binder developed in this study. The test results show that the properties of the high modulus binder are similar to those of the French high modulus binders. In addition to the binder tests, various performance tests are conducted for the high modulus and conventional mixtures. The dynamic modulus test results indicate that the dynamic modulus values of the high modulus mixtures are higher than those of the conventional mixtures by 10~15% at $5^{\circ}C$, 20~25% at $15^{\circ}C$ and 100% at $30^{\circ}C$. It is observed from the performance tests that the high modulus mixtures yield better fatigue, rutting and moisture damage performance than the conventional mixtures.
Viscosity, adhesion and cohesion of asphalt binder are very important characteristics in asphalt pavement. However, these characteristics can cause some problems such as inaccurate amount of asphalt mixture, reduction of asphalt content and loss of workability during asphalt pavement construction. Asphalt release agent has been used to solve these problems. Diesel oil and vegetable oil are generally used as an asphalt release agent in Korea. However, these agents have been criticized from environmental and binder integrity reasons. Therefore, this study evaluated the characteristics of asphalt release agents including diesel oil, vegetable oil and two emulsion type oils. From the study, it was found that the diesel oil resolved the binder within ten minutes and vegetable oil stripped the binder from mixture within one hour after contacting with asphalt mixture. And also, from the test for estimating the application cycle of asphalt release agent, it appears that diesel oil and vegetable oil should be applied to construction equipments every time in their uses. However, diesel oil and vegetable oil showed a good performance as a lubricant for detaching the asphalt mixtures from the truck bed.
PURPOSES : This study was performed to evaluate the possibility of Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) as a testing method that can predict cracking on pavement. METHODS : Three asphalt binders and one kind of aggregate were used in this study, and all asphalt mixtures were produced using Gyratory Compactor followed asphalt mix design. The ITS test was performed for the mixture which are artificially short-term aged using the oven. The ITS properties were analyzed by air void, compaction temperature, asphalt content, and asphalt binder. RESULTS : The results of this study indicated that (1) the compaction temperature did not show relationship with the ITS test; (2) there was no specific trend between the asphalt content and the ITS test; (3) the ITS could reveal the property of kinds of asphalt binders; (4) the asphalt mixture that were produced at optimum temperature suggested by manufacturer did not exhibit optimum result for all asphalt binder. CONCLUSIONS : The possibility of ITS was confirmed from this study for replacement of the Marshall Stability method. However, it needs to perform in further studies of aggregate and compaction property to suggest a new ITS standard value.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the SDAR (solvent deasphaltene residue), which is obtained from the solvent deasphalting (SDA) process, as a pavement material. METHODS : The physical properties of the SDAR were evaluated based on its chemical composition, and asphalt mixtures with the SDAR were fabricated and used for the evaluation of mechanical properties. Firstly, the chemical composition of SARA (saturate, aromatic, resin and asphaltene) was analyzed using the TLC-FID (thin-layer chromatography-flame ionization detector). Moreover, the basic material properties of the asphalt binder with the SDAR were evaluated by the penetration test, softening point test, ductility test, and PG (performance grade) grade test. The rheological properties of the asphalt binder with the SDAR were evaluated by the dynamic shear modulus ($G^*$) obtained using the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle. Secondly, the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures with the SDAR were evaluated. The compactibility was evaluated using the gyratory compacter. Moreover, the tensile strength ratio (TSR) was used for evaluating the moisture susceptibility of the asphalt mixtures (i.e., susceptibility to pothole damage). The dynamic modulus $E^*$, which is a fundamental property of the asphalt mixture, obtained at different temperatures and loading cycles, was used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION : The SDAR shows stiffer and more brittle behavior than the conventional asphalt binder. As the application of the SDAR directly in the field may cause early failures, such as cracks on pavements, it should be applied with modifiers that can favorably modify the brittleness property of the SDAR. Therefore, if appropriate additives are applied on the SDAR, it can be used as a pavement material because of its low cost and strong resistance to rutting.
The polymers, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS) -modified asphalt mixtures are advanced asphalt pavement materials in which $3{\sim}6%$ of them, and/or some other additive, by weight of total binder are added. The purpose of modifying asphalt material is to improve typical weakness such as rutting and cracking resistance of normal asphalt mixtures. These materials have been proved to show many advantages and practical applicability in the plant and field. Wet processed PMA binder and/or dry processed asphalt mixtures are developed as field products for many years. The objective of this paper is to show the characteristics of the LDPE and SBS-modified asphalt mixtures by comprehensive evaluation and comparison with those of normal asphalt mixtures.

This study was carried out to design the optimum mixing ratio of aggregate, cyclic aggregate, and binder (moisture, emulsified asphalt, and emulsion type additives) and produce recycling cold asphalt paving mixture satisfying site work standard. The cyclic aggregate satisfying KS F 2572 was collected from waste asphalt by adequate processing. As the moisture content increased, the shearing strength was decreased. The maximum marshall stability was shown at the 3.0 wt% moisture content. So the optimum moisture content was 3.0 wt%. The marshall stability and flow value with the amount of emulsified asphalt was satisfied in the range of 0.5~2.5 wt%, and the porosity was satisfied in the range of 0.7~2.5 wt%. So the optimum amount of emulsified asphalt was 1.6 wt%. The optimum amount of emulsion type additive was 0.1 wt% in the light of marshall stability and degree of saturation of recycling cold asphalt mixture.

Moisture damage of asphalt pavements can usually occur because of the loss of adhesion and cohesion between the asphalt binder and aggregate in the asphalt mixture due to presence of water. And this is one of the causes that is effect on the main distress of asphalt pavement. The objective of this study is to find out moisture damage characteristics of asphalt pavement. Effects of this study changes of the material properties and resistance characteristics of moisture damage on the asphalt mixtures under various temperatures and repeated immersion using indirect tensile test and modify Lottman test were evaluated during this study. The asphalt mixtures were produced using straight asphalt binder, SBS modified asphalt binder and aggregates. The material properties (resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, failure energy and $DCSE_f$) of the asphalt mixtures were generally decreased with increasing to moisture damage caused by the number of repeated immersion. The decrease ratios of material properties by repeated immersion on SBS modified asphalt mixtures were lower than those of straight asphalt mixtures at all three test temperatures. As a conclusion, current criterion for evaluation moisture damage of asphalt mixtures is difficult for using distinction standard because of the limited evaluation criterion with one time immersion and single material property. Based on this research, to evaluate long term moisture damage on asphalt mixtures, material property tests of various kinds with repeated immersion test are considered.
Almost most of literatures treat behaviors of asphalt binders as a homogeneous single-phase fluid, but this generalization turns out to be a serious mistake. This study introduces all the characteristic equations for asphalt binders, which are modified or unmodified. Especially, characteristic equations for a unhomogeneous multi-phase fluid for modified asphalts is first time proposed. Characteristics of each equations introduced are explained by employing dynamic shear testing data actually measured for specific asphalt binders. Differences of moving behaviors and characteristic equations between a homogeneous single-phase and a unhomogeneous multi-phase fluid are emphasized. These differences help us understand which characteristic equations must be used for a given asphalt fluid and what kinds of properties must be investigated for analysis of a specific asphalt binder. Results of this study provide how to analyse modified and unmodified asphalts, and informations necessary for binder grading.

The binder for hot mix type colored pavement must have the same physical qualities as the straight asphalt cement, but its color must not be dark-brown. We developed a kind of synthetic resin binder with light yellow color and confirmed its possibility as a binder for colored pavement through the several comparison tests between the straight asphalt cement concrete mixture and the mixture of binder and aggregate for colored pavement. For the pigment, it has been assured through tests that home products have the possiblities to be used. The binder has come to the stage of practical use through the trial mixing by asphalt mixing plant and the trial field placing. The mixing operation and the paving method of colored mixture are same as normal asphalt concrete mixture, but the quantity of pigment replaces that of mineral filler. The required content of pigment is decided by the trial mixing with other materials to be used.

Oxidation causes increment of the quantity of large molecular size or LMS in asphalt and is a major reason for hardening of asphalt binder. An extended service life of pavement on a road is expected by reducing oxidation of binder. Oxidation of binder occurs during hot mixing with aggregates before placement on road and then during in-service after the asphalt pavement is constructed. Quantitative increase of LMS as result of aging after RTFO and PAV was analyzed based on the data from high-pressure gel-permeation chromatography (HP-GPC). Polymer modified asphalt (PMA) after RTFO procedure showed 20-30% increment in LMS and then after PAV procedure more than twice, although the percentage of increment was different according to asphalt brand and grade. The PMAs containing LDPE or SBS, which showed a great mechanical property improvement in previous studies, were selected for characterizing PMA aging In this study. Considerably reduced increment of LMS was observed from the PMA containing LDPE after RTFO and PAV procedures. The GPC result showing the binder with less LMS increment means that the asphalt while being mixed with LDPE was aged less during the aging treatment. The dispersed particle of LDPE in asphalt cement seems to disturb oxidative aging reaction and evaporation.
