Diagrid structures have emerged in recent decades as an innovative solution for tube tall buildings, capable of merging structural efficiency and aesthetic quality. This paper investigates the effect of the building slenderness (grossly quantified by means of the aspect ratio, i.e., the ratio between the height and the plan dimension) on the structural behavior and on the optimal design parameters of diagrid tall buildings. For this purpose, building models with different slenderness values are designed by adopting preliminary design criteria, based on strength or stiffness demands; in addition, a design method based on a sizing optimization process that employs genetic algorithms is also proposed, with the aim to compare and/or refine the results obtained with simplified approaches.

Equilibrium equations of a porous FG plate resting on Winkler-Pasternak foundations with various boundary conditions are derived using a new refined shear deformation theory. Different types of porosity distribution rate are considered. Governing equations are obtained including the plate-foundation interaction. This new model meets the nullity of the transverse shear stress at the upper and lower surfaces of the plate. The novel rule of mixture is proposed to describe and approximate material properties of the FG plates with different distribution case of porosity. The validity of this theory is studied by comparing some of the present results with other higher-order theories reported in the literature. Effects of variation of porosity distribution rate, boundary conditions, foundation parameter, power law index, plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio on the deflections and stresses are all discussed.
In this Paper, the mechanical behavior of two reかangular plates spot-welded under free vibration is investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to evaluate the effect of thickness of reinforced plates with equivalent thickness. The results of this the investigation are compared with detailed finite element analysis end experiments of the plates spot-welded for various parameters, such as aspect ratio, arm ratio, and distance ratio of spot-welding Points. The conclusion obtained are as followed. 1. The effect thickness due to spot-weld is very large, such as 55% in comparison with area ratio of spot-welding joint is just 4.52%. 2 The effect of thickness with respect to the distance ratio is maximized when the distance ratio is 0.4.
Self-sensing was evaluated for carbon nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with two different aspect ratios via electro-micromechanical technique and wettability test. Volumetric electrical resistance was measured to evaluate the comparative dispersion degree indirectly and it decreased due to the increase of electric contacts with increasing CNF concentration. The dispersion degree was evaluated indirectly by calculating coefficient of variation (COV) of volumetric electrical resistance. The CNF type A with a high aspect ratio showed better self-sensing than the case of CNF type B with a short aspect ratio. The CNF type B/epoxy composite showed little self-sensing at a concentration higher than 2 vol% probably due to poor dispersion. The apparent modulus of CNF type B was higher than that of CNF type A due to the orientation effect and the high surface area. The thermodynamic work of adhesion was consistent with the result of apparent modulus.
It has long been studied about the flow around bluff bodies, but the effect of aspect ratio on the sharp-edged bodies in thick turbulent boundary layers is still argued. The author investigates the flow characteristics around a series of rectangular bodies ($40^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$, $80^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$ and $160^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$ in mm) placed in a deep turbulent boundary layer. The study is aiming to identify the extant Reynolds number independence of the rectangular bodies and furthermore understand the surface pressure distribution around the bodies such as the suction pressure in the leading edge, when the shape of bodies is changed, responsible for producing extreme suction pressures around the bluff bodies. The experiments are carried out at three different Reynolds numbers, based on the velocity U at the body height h, of 24,000, 46,000 and 67,000, and large enough that the mean boundary layer flow is effectively Reynolds number independent. The experiment includes wind tunnel work with the velocity and surface pressure measurements. The results show that the generation of the deep turbulent boundary layer in the wind tunnel and the surface pressure around the bodies were all independent of Reynolds number and the longitudinal length, but highly dependent of the transverse width.

Recently, new types of wearable devices such as textile electronics are considered as the next generation wearable electronics. To realize the textile electronics, conductive fibers are required to supply the power and for signal processing. Conventionally, silver nanowires (Ag NWs) have been attracted as one of the conductive additives in the fibers, however, using the Ag NWs may lead to high production cost since it is a noble metal. Many researches have been done to replace the Ag NWs into a cheaper materials such as copper nanowires (Cu NWs). Here, we synthesized ultra-long Cu NWs for a conductive filler material in conductive fibers, taking advantages of their structural features. To investigate the effect of capping agents on the aspect ratio of the synthesized Cu NWs, we used various capping agents such as hexadecylamine, butylamine, ethylenedilamine and oleylamine in the Cu NW synthesis. In this research, the effects of capping agents on the structure and the synthesis of Cu NWs are presented.
Large eddy simulation is used to investigate the compressible flow over a cavity with high aspect ratio. The sub-grid scale stresses are modeled using the dynamic model. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the sixth order accurate compact finite difference scheme in the space and the 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme in the time. The buffer Bone techniques are used for non-reflecting boundary conditions. The results show the shear layer oscillation over the cavity. The votical disturbances, the roll-up of vorticity, and impingement and scattering of vorticity at the downstream cavity edge can be seen in the shear layer. Several peaks for the resonant frequencies are found in the spectra of the vertical velocity at the center-line. The most energetic Peak near the downstream edge is different from that at the center part of the cavity The pressure has its minimum value in the vortex core inside the cavity, and becomes very high at the downstream face of the cavity. The variation of the model coefficient predicted by the dynamic model is quite large between 0 and 0.3. The model coefficient increases in the stream-wise evolution of the shear layer and sharply decreases near the wall due to the wall effect.

Welding characteristics of austienite 304 stainless and SM45C using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser n experimentally investigated Laser beam welding is increasingly being used in welding of structural steels. The laser welding process is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies owing to its high speed and deep penetration. The thermal cycles associated with laser welding are generally much Inter than those involved in conventional welding processes, leading to a rather small weld zone. Experiments are performed for 304 stainless steel plates changing several process parameter such as laser power, welding speed, shielding gas flow rate, presence of surface pollution, with fixed or variable gap and misalignment between the similar and dissimilar and plates, etc. The Nd:YAG laser welding process is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies owing to its high speed and penetration. This paper describes the weld ability of SM45C carbon steel for machine structural use by Nd:YAG laser. The follow conclusions can be drawn that laser power and welding speed have a pronounced effect on size and shape of the fusion zone. Increase in welding speed resulted in an increase in weld depth/aspect ratio and hence a decrease in the fusion zone size. The penetration depth increased with the increase in laser power.

The flow structure around the free end of a finite circular cylinder (FC) embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over open terrain was investigated experimentally with varying the free end shape. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return type subsonic wind tunnel. A finite cylinder with an aspect ratio (L/D) of 6 was mounted vertically on a long flat plate. The Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is about Re=7,500. The velocity fields near the FC free end were measured using the single-frame double-exposure PIV method. As a result, for the FC with a right-angled free end, there is a peculiar vortical structure, showing counter-rotating twin vortices near the FC free end. It is caused by the interaction between the entrained irrotational fluids from both sides of FC and the downwash flow from the FC free-end.
