  • The disposal of polythene waste and fly ash is causing serious threat to the environment. Aim of this study is to decrease environmental pollution by using polythene waste and fly ash in concrete. In this study, cement was partially replaced with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% fly ash (by weight) and plastic waste was added in shredded form at 0.6% by weight of concrete. The specimens were prepared for the concrete mix of M25 grade and water to cementitious material ratio (w/c) was maintained as 0.45. Fresh concrete property like workability was examined during casting the specimens. Hardened properties were found out by carrying out the experimental work on cubes, cylinders and beams which were cast in laboratory and their behavior under test were observed at 7 & 28 days for compressive strength and at 28 days for density, flexural strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, abrasion resistance, water permeability and impact resistance. Overall results of this study show that addition of 0.6% (by weight of the concrete) plastic waste with 10% (by weight of cement) replacement of cement by fly ash result an improvement in properties of the concrete than conventional mix.

  • The major shortcoming of concrete in most of the applications is its high self-weight and thermal conductivity. The emerging trend to overcome these shortcomings is the use of foam-concrete, which is a lightweight concrete consisting of cement, filler, water and a foaming agent. This study aims at the development of a cost-effective high-volume fly-ash foam-concrete insulation wall cladding for existing buildings using natural fiber like rice straw in different proportions. The paper reports the results of systematic studies on various mechanical, acoustic, thermal and durability properties of foam-concrete with and without replacement of cement by fly-ash. Fly-ash replaces 60 percent by weight of cement in foam-concrete. The water-solid ratio of 0.3, the filler ratio of 1:1 by weight, and the density of 1100 kg/㎥ (approx.) are fixed for all the mixes. Rice straw at 1%, 3% and 5% by weight of cement was added to improve the thermal and acoustic efficiency. From the investigations, it was inferred that the strength properties were increased with fly-ash replacement up to 1% rice straw addition. In furtherance, addition of rice straw and fly-ash resulted in improved acoustic and thermal properties.

  • Recently, the method of the apartment building design has been changed from wall type structures to moment structures. With like this reason, dry walls we used plentifully. Especially, the gypsum board was used from previously plentifully however the weak point of it is difficult to maintain because it weak strength. For the improvement of gypsum board, light weight concrete panel using cement board is used recently. As this study is the research of the series t on the development of non-bearing light weight concrete panel using bottom ash, the purpose of this study is to obtain basic data for application in the field. The results are that the structure 1 satisfies domestic standard concerned with sound insulation between households at the laboratory and field test.

  • Bottom ash, which is discharged through a wet process in a thermal power plant, contains much unburned coal due to quenching and much salt due to seawater. However, dry bottom ash discharged through a dry process contains low unburned coal and salt, and has light -weight due to many pores. Therefore, it is expected that it can be used as lightweight aggregate. This study deals with the basic properties of concrete used dry bottom ash as coarse aggregate. As a results, the concrete having high content of dry bottom ash aggregate showed high slump by using water reducing agent and its air content was within 5±1.5% as designed value, similarly to normal weight concrete. It also showed a lower compressive strength than 100% of crushed stone.

  • In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the applications of bottom ash, which is an industrial by-product obtained from thermal power plants. Bottom ash was used as fine aggregate in this study, and an experiment was conducted to determine the characteristics of the bottom ash aggregate. In addition, 25, 50, 75, and 100% contents of crushed (natural) fine aggregate were replaced with bottom ash aggregate to produce concrete mixture including bottom ash. Thereafter, test results of the unit weight, ultrasonic velocity, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity of bottom ash concrete were obtained. Moreover, the effect of the curing ages of 28 and 91 days on the material characteristics of bottom ash concrete were identified. Test results showed that bottom ash used as fine aggregate had pozzolanic reaction. Finally, based on the extensive experimental results, relationships between thermal conductivity and unit weight, ultrasonic velocity, and compressive strength was suggested.

  • Mechanical characteristics of bottom ash produced in coal-fired power plant are investigated to utilize as light-weight fill materials. Triaxial compression test, water retention test, and unsaturated direct shear test were conducted for weathered soil (WS), reclaimed bottom ash (RBA), and screened bottom ash (BA). RBA had larger frictional angle and lower effective cohesion than those of WS. Water retention charactersitics of RBA and BA existed within distributions of soil-water characteristic curves for domestic weathered soils. Unsaturated shear strength of RBA was similar to that of WS at matric suctions of 50 kPa and 100 kPa. As a conclusion, bottom ash can be used as fill materials to replace the conventional construction materials by.

  • Recently, due to abnormal climate phenomena caused by greenhouse gas, flood damage such as local torrential rain has been emerging in Korea. Accordingly, there is a growing need for porous blocks capable of permeability in concrete, but there are limitations in commercialization due to problems such as high unit weight and flexural strength development limitations. This study investigates the unit weight and strength properties of porous blocks using bottom ash as an alternative to aggregate as part of a study to improve the light weight of porous blocks.
