Pilot-Scale Testing of a Vibrating Electrostatic Separator for Fly Ash Decarbonization

  • A new electrostatic separator has been developed for the removal of unburned carbon from fly ash. In this separator, a flowing film of fly ash is created on the surface of a vibrating electrode. Conducting particles such as unburned carbon acquire electrostatic charges and jump out of the flowing film so that they can be removed from the non-conducting fly ash particles moving forward. The new separator has been tested successfully using a pilot-scale test unit at 0.5 tons/hr capacity. Based on the successful test results, a larger unit is being constructed at the present time.

Effects of Operating Variables on Separation Rate and Separation Efficiency in Ash Separator for Solid Fuel Chemical Looping Combustor (고체연료 매체순환연소기를 위한 회재분리기에서 분리속도 및 분리효율에 미치는 조업변수들의 영향)

  • To develop an ash separator for the solid fuel chemical looping combustion system, effects of operating variables such as solid injection nozzle velocity, diameter of solid injection nozzle, gap between solid injection line and vent line, vent line inside diameter, and solid intake height on solid separation rate and solid separation efficiency were measured and discussed using heavy and coarse particle and light and fine particles mixture as bed material in an acrylic fluidized bed apparatus. The solid separation rate increased as the solid injection nozzle velocity and the diameter of solid injection nozzle increased. However, the solid separation rate decreased as the gap between solid injection line and vent line, the vent line inside diameter, and the solid intake height increased. The solid separation efficiency was in inverse proportion to the solid separation rate. In this study, we could get high solid separation rate up to 2.39 kg/hr with 91.6% of solid separation efficiency.

  • The goal of this study is to investigate the potential application of triboelectrostatic separation process for removing unburned carbon from fly ash. The process utilizes the difference in electrical charging characteristics between the organic material (carbon) and the mineral matter (fly ash). In the present work, dry separation tests have been conducted on Samchunpo fly ash samples using a bench - scale analytic separator. The test variables studied include air rate, feed rate, electric field strength, particle size, charger material and length, etc. The best separation results were obtained at the air rate 501/min, feed rate 15 g/min and voltage 15 ㎸. The fly ash with carbon content below 1 % was obtained with over 65% recovery.

  • Segregation of binary particle systems in a horizontally gyrated bed has been experimentally studied to recover the heavy metals from municipal waste incineration (MWI) ash. Differences in density and size had less effect on segregation. Effective segregation took place under the centrifugal effect of 1 or less for any particle size ratio. Zn, Cu and Pb were concentrated in the upper side of bed by the horizontal vibration. However, there was less change in concentration for other metals such as Mg, Al and Fe etc. The separation system with the horizontal gyrating separator proved to be an effective method for the pretreatment of recovering Zn, Cu and Pb from incineration residues.

  • This study investigates possibility for practical use through small sized test with OPC and substituted fly ash 10% and return coarse cement (RCC), classed 1100${\sim}$1200 cm2/g, which is made by Cyclone Separator at cement producing process 20% (CF) for OPC. The experimental factors are 48% of W/B and OPC and 2 kinds of concrete proportions. The target slump and air content are $150{\pm}25$ mm and $4.5{\pm}1.5$ %. For the results, the flowalility and air content of CF are less than OPC because it needs more superplasticiser and air-entraining agent. The temperature history of CF is lower than OPC about $6{\sim}10^{\circ}C$. For the strength properties, CF is less than OPC, but their gap is declined at 28 days. The strength of the specimens are ordered by standard curing, field cured specimens, and core specimens.

  • The bottom ash of municipal solid waste incineration generated during incineration of municipal solid waste in metropolitan area consists of ceramics, glasses, ferrous materials, combustible materials and food waste and so on. Although the ferrous material was separated by the magnetic separation before the incineration process, of which content accounts for about $3{\sim}11%$ in bottom ash. The formation of a $Fe_3O_4-Fe_2O_3$ double layer(similar to pure Fe) on the iron surface was found during air-annealing in the incinerator at $1000^{\circ}C$. A strong thermal shock, such as that takes place during water-cooling of bottom ash, leads to the breakdown of this oxidation layer, facilitating the degradation of ferrous metals and the formation of corrosion products and it existed as $Fe_2O_3,\;Fe_3O_4\;and\;FeS_2$. So, many problems could occur in the use of bottom ash as an aggregate substitutes in construction field. Therefore, in this study, the separation of ferrous materials from municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash was investigated. In the result, the ferrous product(such as $Fe_2O_3,\;Fe_3O_4,\;FeS_2$ and iron) by magnetic separator at 3800 gauss per total bottom ash(w/w.%) accounted for about 18.7%, and 87.7% of the ferrous product was in the size over 1.18 mm. Also the iron per total bottom ash accounted for about 3.8% and the majority of it was in the size over 1.18 mm.

  • Two coals which have a quite different properties were selected to compare the combustion characteristics in a cyclone combustor. The capacity of the combustion test rig is about 75kW and total volume is 5.7 liters. The pulverized sample coals are well burned from fuel rich(air ratio 0.4) to fuel lean(airs ratio 1.6). Two different property coals show quite different patterns of ash collection in slag pot, dust separator and combustion chamber. Combustion temperature of subbituminous coal is about $100^{\circ}C$ lower than bituminous coal at the entire region, and in case of bituminous coal, hot spot appeared at the lower part and axial line of the combustion chamber.

  • Twenty five samples of the scheelite-powellite series from twelve Korean tungsten deposits of various geologic settings were studied mineralogically and geochemically. Variations in the trace-element contents of the scheelite minerals are considered in relation to geologic settings and mineralogic properties. Scheelites from ore deposits developed in similar geologic settings and under similar physicochemical conditions are characterized by specific combinations of trace elements.

  • The use of hydrodynamic separator is becoming increasingly popular for suspended solids reduction in urban storm runoff. This study is a laboratory investigation of the use of Vortex Screen to reduce the solids concentration of synthesized storm runoff. The synthesized storm runoff was made with water and addition of particles; manhole sediment, road sediment, fly ash, and ployvinyl chloride powder. Vortex Screen was made of acryl resin with 250 mm of diameter and height of 700 mm. To determine the removal efficiency for various influent concentrations of suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), tests were performed with different operational conditions. The samples were taken simultaneously at the influent storage tank and effluent tank, and measured SS and COD concentrations. The ranges of surface loading rate were 110 to 1,550 $m^3/m^2$/day, and influent SS concentrations were varied from 141 to 1,986 mg/L. This paper was intended to evaluate the effect of inlet baffle and the ratio of underflow to overflow ($Q_U/Q_O$) on particle separation efficiency for various particle size using Vortex Screen. It was found that when increase of $Q_U/Q_O$ from 10% to 20%, SS removal efficiency was increased about 6%. The range of SS and COD removal efficiencies of road sediment particle size 125<$d_p$<300 ${\mu}m$ were 68.0~81.0%, 53.1~71.9%, respectively. Results showed that SS removal efficiency with inlet baffle improved by about 10~20% compared without inlet baffle.

Recycle of Unburned Carbon and Microceramics as Alternatives to Rubber Weight-Adding Materials and Polypropylene Filling Agents (고무증량재 및 플라스틱 충진재의 대체재로 UC와 CM의 재활용)

  • Unburned carbon (UC) was successfully separated from fly ash by up to 85.8% in weight via froth flotation using soybean oil as a collector. An 18 wt% yield of microceramics (CM) could be achieved by employing a hydro cyclone separator located immediately after the flotation equipment. UC and CM were tested as alternatives to weight-adding material and polymer (especially polypropylene in this study) filler, respectively. Large particles of UC were broken down into smaller ones via ball milling to have an average particle diameter of 10.2 ㎛. When crushed UC was used as an alternative to clay as a rubber weight-adding material, a somewhat lower tensile strength and elongation rate than the allowed values were unfortunately obtained. In order to satisfy the standard limits, further treatment of UC is required to enhance surface energy for more intimate bonding with rubber. CM was observed in spherical forms with an average diameter of 5 ㎛. The surface of the CM particles was modified with phenol, polyol, stearic acid, and oleic acid so that the surface modified CM could be used as a polypropylene-filling agent. The flowability was good, but due to the lack of coupling forces with polypropylene, successful impact strength and flexural strength could not be obtained. However, when mixing the surface-modified CM with 1% silane by weight, a drastic increase in both the impact strength and flexural strength were obtained.
