The solvent flushing apparatus for soil remediation was manufactured. After the soil around nuclear facilities was sampled and was compulsorily contaminated by Co, the remediation characteristics by solvent flushing were analyzed. Meanwhile, one-dimensional solute transport within nonequilibrium sorption code was developed for modelling of the soil remediation, input parameters for modelling were measured by laboratory experiment. Experimental results are as follows : When water was used as a solvent, the higher was the hydraulic conductivity, the higher the efficiency of soil remediation was. When EDTA solution was used as a solvent, the soil remediation efficiency of EDTA solution showed higher than that of water.
As Total Maximum Daily Load program is being implemented, needs for the management and treatment of contaminated sediment are rising to attain cleaner water resources. In this paper, impacts and management methods of contaminated sediment were reviewed. BACKGROUND: Soil contamination of As is a very sensitive environmental issue due to its adverse impact on human health and different characteristics with other heavy metals. With public awareness of As poisoning, there has been growing interest in developing guideline and remediation technologies for As-contaminated soil. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of stabilizing amendments and soil dressing methods on the mobility of As in the contaminated rice paddy soils nearby mining area. METHODS AND RESULTS: Different amendments were mixed with surface and subsurface contaminated soils at a ratio of 3% (w/w) and monitored for five months. Three different extractants including 0.01M $CaCl_2$, TCLP, and PBET were used to examine As bioavailability in the soil and the concentration of As in rice grain was also measured with an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. The results showed that all amendment treatments decreased As concentration compared to the control. Especially, coal mine drainage sludge (CMDS) treatment showed the highest efficiency of decreasing As concentration in the soil and rice grain. The values of Pearson correlation (r) between As concentrations in the soil and rice grain were 0.782, 0.753, and 0.678 for $CaCl_2$, TCLP, and PBET methods, respectively. Especially, $CaCl_2$ method was highly correlated between As concentrations of the soil and soil solution (r=0.719), followed by TCLP (r=0.706), PBET (r=0.561) methods. CONCLUSION: Stabilizing amendments can effectively reduce available As concentration in the soils as well as soil solution, and thereby potentially mitigating risks of crop contamination by As.
Fundamental data was obtained to apply to the real contaminated soil of railroad by analyzing pollutant-elimination efficiency and process variables through electro-kinetic technology as well as by investigating Pollution sources of railroad soil contaminated by oil and pollution propensities.
This study describes the results of laboratory model test on settlement of soil contaminated with heavy metals, in order to evaluate the applicability of VMS to the measurement of gound settlements generated during the purification of contaminated soil. The measurement results for settlement of contaminated soil were compared using a 3D-Visual Monitoring System (VMS) based on digital photogrammetry and a total station. The test result showed that the settlement of the soil contaminated with heavy metals occurred a lot in the experimental condition in which the hydrophilic filter was applied. The minimum and maximum error ranges of VMS were calculated as ±0.36mm and ±0.87mm, respectively, and the error of VMS was satisfied in all experimental conditions. The average error rate of VMS was lower in the hydrophilic filter condition than in the hydrophobic filter condition. Therefore, it was evaluated that VMS can be applied to measure the settlement of contaminated soil.
Policies of the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark were compared and analyzed on risk assessment of contaminated sites. These countries were chosen from a feasible preliminary analysis of 18 countries of the European Union and the U. S. All the countries selected met two major criteria : I) implementation of risk assessment to determine the soil contamination and remediation targets of contaminated sites, ii) use of soil guidance values and risk assessment as complementary measures to determine soil contamination. Suggested policy improvements to Korea regarding these issues include i) legislation of a rational risk assessment methodology of contaminated sites, and ii) enactment of collaboration of risk assessment with the soil guidance values. To establish effective risk assessment legislation, additional in-depth research on social, economic and long-term effects of the proposed risk assessment methodologies, as well as the mutual consent of all parties including academia, industry, and administration will be necessary. Linking risk assessment with soil guidance values would be applicable to a site contaminated where the contaminant concentration exceeds a certain soil guidance value. In parallel, application of risk assessment to a site where a contaminant concentration is naturally different such as mining sites would be plausible. The policy suggestions above are not yet conclusive due to a lack of policy implementation, and simulation. Thus, additional research on developing risk assessment methodology is needed. Nevertheless, initiation of the suggested policy would increase the efficacy of Korean policy regarding the survey and remediation of contaminated sites.

The study is to propose the optimal separation technique of heavy metals (Pb and Zn) contaminated in soil for improving the removal efficiency by various applicable techniques. The heavy metal contaminated soil samples near abandoned mine X-1 and X-2 were used for the study. Firstly, the wet classification process was shown more than 80% of removal efficiency for lead and zinc. Meanwhile, the magnetic separation process was shown low removal efficiency for lead and zincs because those heavy metals were non-magnetic materials. For the next step, the flotation separation process was shown approximately 24.4% of removal efficiency for zinc, while the gravity concentration process was shown approximately 57% of removal efficiency for lead, and 19.9% of removal efficiency for zinc, respectively. Therefore, zinc contaminated in soil would be effectively treated by the combination technique of the wet classification and the flotation technique. Meanwhile, lead contaminated in soil would be effectively treated by the combination technique of the wet classification process and the flotation process. Furthermore, the extraction of organic matter was shown more effective with aeration, 3% of hydrogen peroxide and 3% of lime such as calcium hydroxide.
Geochemical and mineralogical properties of a contamited soil should be taken into account to decide a remediation strategy for a given contaminant because development and optimization of soil remedial technologies are based on geochemical and mineralogical separation techniques. The objective of this study was to investigate the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of arsenic-contaminated soils. The arsenic-contaminated soil samples were obtained from Chonam gold mine, Gwangyang, Chonnam, Particle size analysis, sequential extraction, and mineralogical analyses were used to characterize geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the As-contaminated soils. Particle size analyses of the As-contaminated soils showed the soils contained 17-36% sand, 25-54% silt, 9-28% clay and the soil texture were sandy loam, loam, and silt loam. The soil pH ranged from 4.5 to 6.6. The amount of arsenic concentrations from the sequential soil leaching is mainly associated with iron oxides (1 to 75%) and residuals (12 to 91%). Major minerals of sand and silt fractions in the soils were feldspar, kaolinite, mica, and quartz and minor mineral of which is an iron oxide. Major minerals of clay fraction were composed of illite, kaolinite, quartz, and vermiculite. And minor minerals are iron oxide and rutile. The geochemical and mineralogical analyses indicated the arsenic is adsorbed or coprecipitated with iron oxides or phyllosilicate minerals. The results may provide understanding of geochemical and mineralogical characteristics for the site remediation of arsenic-contaminated soils.
The effects of major cations in soils, soil : extractant ratio, and EDTA : lead stoichiometric ratio on the extraction efficiency of lead using EDTA were studied for 4 different actual lead-contaminated soils and one artificially lead-contaminated soil. Extraction of lead from the lead-contaminated soil was not affected by a soil : extractant ratio as low as 1 : 3 but instead was dependent on the quantity of EDTA present. Results of the experiments showed that the extraction efficiency for each soil was different, but if sufficiently large amount of EDTA was applied, all the lead may be extracted except for a soil from lead mining area. The differences in extraction efficiencies nay be due to the major cations present in soils which may compete with lead for active sites on EDTA. The total molar amount of major cations extracted was as muck as 20 times more than the added molar amount of EDTA. For some of the soils tested, the extraction efficiency of lead may be affected by being occluded in the Fe and Mn oxides present in the soil. While major cations present in the soil may be one of the factors affecting lead extraction efficiency, the type of lead species present may also play a role. When these factors affect severely, the using of EDTA to extract lead from lead-contaminated soil might be non-effective method.

The purpose of this study was to suggest a standard design procedure of landfarming for clean-up of oil-contaminated soils. The standard design procedure consisted of four main phases; soil characterization, determination of contaminated soil volume, determination of nutrient and microbial doses, and estimation of the total remedial period. This study selected standard design parameter values or ranges among various forms used in environmental engineer communities. Those were determination procedures for the contaminated soil volume, the initial contamination concentration and nutrient doses. The suggested standard design procedure were applied for a landfarm design for remediation of a real oil-contaminated site. Soil texture of the site was classified as sandy clay loam and sandy loam. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus were estimated to be 57.01 mg/kg and 83.40 mg/kg, respectively. Also the viable bacterial numbers was assessed to be $1.78{\times}10^4CFU/g$ dry soil. The amount of TPH contaminated soil was estimated to be $4,092m^3$. With the application of remedial factors, it was estimated that the contaminated soil could be treated through 9 batches with a duration of 315 days for a landfarming unit of $15m{\times}40m{\times}1m$. The amount of liquid microorganisms and fertilizers were recommended to be 4,025L and 4,641kg, respectively.
