  • Recent advance in material technology has accelerated the development of high strength concrete using lightweight artificial aggregates. The lightweight concrete has many advantages that the reduction of dead lads and the increase in load capacity can ofter. In this study, lightweight polymer concrete using unsaturated polyester resin and lightweight aggregate were prepared and tested for testing the physical and the mechanical properties. The compressive strengths of lightweight polymer concretes with specific gravities from 1.32 to 1.78 were compressive strength of 250 to 470 $kgf/cm^2$ and flexural strengths were measured to be in the range of a third to a quarter of compressive strength

  • The purpose of this study is to manufacture lightweight aggregates for recycling water treatment sludge, to identify the physical properties of the aggregates, and present a method of utilizing the manufactured lightweight aggregates. The chemical composition and thermal properties were examined via a raw materials analysis. The aggregate examined here was fired by the rapid sintering method and the single-particle density and water absorption rate were measured. Water treatment sludge has high ignition loss and high fire resistance. When 30wt% of purified sludge was added, the single-particle density of the aggregates was in the range of 0.8~1.2g/cm3 at a temperature of 1,150~1,200℃. At temperatures of 1200℃ or higher, ultra-light aggregates having a single-particle density of 0.8 or less could be produced. When applied to concrete by replacing the general aggregate in the concrete, a specimen having strength values of 200 to 450 kgf/cm2 on 28 days was obtained, and when applied as a filter material, the performance was equal to or higher than that of ordinary sand.

  • This study uses the recovered water as mixing water and artificial lightweight aggregate pre-wetting water as part of a study to increase the recycling rate and reduce greenhouse gas of the ready-mixed concrete recovered during the concrete transport process, and cement fine powder of blast furnace slag(BFS) and fly ash(FA). The engineering characteristics of the three-component lightweight aggregate mortar used as a substitute were reviewed. For this purpose, the flow, dry unit mass, compressive strength, drying shrinkage, neutralization depth, and chloride ion penetration resistance of the three-component lightweight aggregate mortar were measured. When used together with the formulation, when 15 % of BFS and 5 % of FA were used, it was found to be positive in improving the compressive strength and durability of the mortar.

  • Artificial lightweight aggregates were produced by using bottom ashes and dredged soils from coal power plant. The amount of glassy phases on the aggregate surfaces, specific gravities, absorption rates, and observations of cross-sectional surfaces were compared according to the compositions, sintering temperatures, and the amount of coating. It is concluded that surface modification by 10 % $CaCO_3$ coating on the aggregate surfaces enhances the properties of aggregates as follows: Specific gravities were controlled by depressing formation of large pores in the aggregates. Sticking phenomena among aggregates during the sintering process was drastically decreased by reducing glassy phases on the aggregate surfaces. Pumping problems during the application of ready-mix concretes containing lightweight aggregates having high value of absorption rates could be solved by reducing the absorption rate.

  • EAF dust from steel industry used as primary materials for the production of lightweight aggregates. Fe compounds in EAF dust plays an important role in the bloating reaction. This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using bottom ash and dredged soil from coal power plant and EAF dust. The effect of different raw material compositions and sintering temperatures on the lightweight aggregate properties were evaluated. The characteristic of thermal bloating of bottom ash and dredged soil were mainly influenced by ferrous materials. The specific gravity of aggregate was decreased with the addition of EAF dust and kerosene was reduced sintering temperature on the bloating formation. Lightweight aggregate containing 10% EAF dust having apparent density under 1.0 g/$cm^3$ were produced at $1150{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$.

  • The artificial lightweight aggregate (ALA) was manufactured using coal bottom ashes produced from a thermoelectric power plant with clay and, the sintering temperature and batch composition dependence upon physical properties of ALA were studied. The bottom ash (BA) had 13wt% coarse particle (>4.75mm) and showed very irregular shape so should be crushed to fine particles to be formed with clay by extrusion process. Also the bottom ash contained a many unburned carbon which generates the gas by oxidation and lighten a aggregate during a sintering process. Plastic index of green bodies decreased with increasing bottom ash content but the extrusion forming process was possible for the green body containing BA up to 40wt% whose plastic index and plastic limit were around 10 and 22 respectively. The ALA containing $30{\sim}40wt%$ BA sintered at $1100{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ showed a volume specific density of $1.3{\sim}1.5$ and water absorption of $13{\sim}15%$ and could be appled for high-rise building and super-long bridge.

  • The purpose of this study was to figure out the impacts of iron oxide types and dosages to bloating when producing artificial lightweight aggregates by utilization of recycled resources such as bottom-ash, reject-ash and dredgedsoil. In order to figure out chemical characteristics of raw materials, XRD and XRF analyses were performed. 50 wt% of dredged-soil, 15 wt% of bottom-ash and 35wt.% of reject-ash were mixed, then the amount of iron oxide was varied at 5 to 30 wt% with intervals of 5 wt% with $Fe_2O_3$ and $Fe_3O_4$ respectively. As molded aggregates were sintered by rapid sintering in intervals of $40^{\circ}C$ from $1060^{\circ}C$ to $1180^{\circ}C$, specific gravity and water absorption were measured. As a result, the artificial lightweight aggregate with iron oxide of 10~15 vol% showed the lowest specific gravity, and it was identified that the more iron oxide vol% increases, the more specific gravity increases because of liquid phase sintering.

  • Recently, the more the PET bottles are needed, the more waste PET bottles were produced. So, if there was no suitable recycling, that was contaminate our environment and use up the natural resources. This paper deals with the artificial lightweight aggregate(ALA), made of waste PET bottles, and the properties of concrete replaced with ALA. As a result of experiment, it is shown that the specific gravity of PBLA is 1.39, the unit volume weight is 844 kg/$cm^3$, and absorbing rate is 0. In absorbing rate test, the rate is 10 % increased by replacing of 20 % PBLA and the mixture rate for water and cement is 44.6 % and 51.2 %, in case target strength for 240kgf/$cm^2$, and 270kg/$cm^2$, by added PBLA 75 % and 50 % respectively. So, to obtain a certain target strength, appropriate W/C ratio is required the replacement ratio of PBLA.

  • Accumulated annual reservoir sedimentation in Taiwan was 14.6 million m3 in 2010, seriously endangering reservoir safety and the water supply. In addition, the sintering temperature of reservoir-sediment aggregates (RSAs) is very high, and very energy consuming consequently. Therefore, to explore the effects of admixtures on sintering behavior and performance of the aggregates, two different admixtures are blended, waste-glass and municipal sewage sludge, into reservoir sediment to make artificial aggregates. Experimental results show that the lightweight characteristics of waste-glass/reservoir-sediment aggregates (WGRSAs) are more significant than those of sewage sludge/reservoir-sediment aggregates (SSRSAs). Moreover, as sintering temperature increases, the specific gravity of WGRSAs drops more apparently. The optimum sintering temperature of pure reservoir-sediment aggregates (PRSAs), SSRSAs, and WGRSAs was $1150^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$, and $1050^{\circ}C$, respectively. The PRSAs are normal weight with better strength; the WGRSAs are lightweight and energy-saving; and the SSRSAs are lightweight with normal strength.
