  • This paper investigates how artificial individuals with behavioral memory circuits adaptively evolve with respect to given environments on a cell-level simulation framework simulating artificial individuals. This makes it possible for us to analyse the advantages of artificial individuals with behavioral memory circuits against the simple artificial individuals that can do only simple reactions with respect to the environments and to know which advanced reactions are possible. In order to do this analysis, we experimented various tests on a specific prey pattern and examined the results. As a first experiment, we tested that artificial individuals with four memory steps competed against from those without memory step to those with three memory steps. Experimental results showed that the artificial individuals with four memory steps were superior to most others. However, artificial individuals with two memory steps were better than those with four memory steps. This was caused that the artificial individuals with two memory steps could evolve faster than those of four memory steps. In a second experiment that all types of artificial individuals are simultaneously evolved, the artificial individuals with two memory steps also showed the best result in the experiment. We could conclude that the artificial individuals with memory was better than those without memory and the best memory steps of artificial individuals were depended on the complexity of prey patterns.

  • In this paper, we studied the evolution of behavioral logic of artificial individuals using cell-level evolution framework. We first implemented cell-level evolution framework and then investigated the evolution of behavioral logic that artificial individuals ate foods on the framework. A logic frame for behavioral decisions of artificial individuals was devised and applied to the framework. From extensive tests, we found that most artificial individuals could evolve the behavioral logic that they could eat food in a short generation. It was also confirmed that most behavioral logics showed nearly same behaviors of artificial individuals in most tests. Our method has the differences from existing algorithms using evolutionary algorithms and evolvable hardwares in that it is a basically different approach. These results showed that our framework could be a good tool for investigating the evolution of artificial individuals in a cell-level.

  • Smart home and artificial intelligence technologies are developing rapidly, and various smart home systems associated with artificial intelligence (AI) improved the quality of living for people. In the present research, we examine the role of individuals' motivational system in their responses to the application of AI in smart homes. In particular, this research focuses on individuals' prevention motivational system and investigates whether individuals' attitudes toward the application of AI in smart homes differ according to their level of prevention motivation. Specifically, it is hypothesized that individuals with strong (vs. weak) prevention motivation will have more favorable attitudes toward the application of AI in smart homes. Consistent with the hypothesis, the results reveal that the respondents in the strong (vs. weak) prevention motivation reported significantly more favorable attitudes toward the six types of AI-based application in smart homes (e.g., AIbased AR/VR games, AI pet care system, AI robots, etc.). Our findings suggest that individuals' prevention motivational system may be an effective market segmentation tool in facilitating their positive responses to the application of AI in smart homes.

  • This study monitored a variety of marine communities during monthly or bimonthly censuses from February 1999 to August 2000. The communities investigated included artificial reefs composed of various substrates, which were placed on an area of sandy bottom at 8, 10, and 13m depths in Muronohana, Ikata, Shikoku, Japan. Economically important shell fishes, such as the turban shell and abalone, appeared on the artificial reefs after 1 month of construction. Shell fishes were recorded at levels of five to 20 individuals per reef. A total of 37 species (4 orders, 19 families) were identified during the experimental period. Apagon semilineatus, Trachurus japonicus, Pteragogus sp., and Pterogobius elapoides accumulated over an average of 100 individuals during the study period. Apagon semilineatus, Pteragogus sp., and P. elapoides accumulated over 1,000 individuals on all artificial reefs in May 1999. Trachurus japonicus reached well over 500 individuals in the artificial iron reef during June and July 2000. Higher monthly variation in fish abundance occurred during periods of high temperature, as compared to periods of low temperature between December 1999 and March 2000. More fish were observed in the artificial iron reef than in the artificial concrete reef, because the former offered a broader inner space and the shadows of the roofs served as a shelter for fish.

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effect of individual perception of artificial intelligence and the level of digital literacy on the acceptance of artificial intelligence-based public services. For empirical analysis, a research model was set up based on the technology acceptance model and planned behavior theory using survey data of 2017 and analyzed through structural equations. To summarize the results of the analysis, firstly, the positive perception of individuals about artificial intelligence technology plays a role in reinforcing attitudes toward benefits and reducing concerns about public service in which artificial intelligence technology has been introduced. Secondly, the level of digital literacy reinforces both benefits and concerns about artificial intelligence technology, but it was found that the intention to use public services was reinforced through the benefits of artificial intelligence technology perceived by individuals, rather than privacy concerns about artificial intelligence technology. Thirdly, it was confirmed that the perceived benefits of individuals on artificial intelligence technology reinforced the intention to use public civil services, and privacy concerns negatively influenced the intention to use. It was confirmed that the influence of a perceived ease of use and usefulness, as opposed to privacy concerns, further reinforces the intention to use. Both citizens' positive perceptions regarding the accuracy and reliability of information provided through artificial intelligence technology and institutional complementation of responsibility for errors caused by artificial intelligence technology are strengthened, and technical problems related to privacy protection are solved.

  • This study was conducted to understand the distribution characteristics of aquatic insects in ecologically different ponds in terms of the disruption. We investigated the fauna of aquatic insects in three artificial ponds (pond 1, 2 and 3) and two natural ponds (pond 4 and 5) located within 1 km each other around Gungdaeoreum in Jeju Island, from March 2018 to June 2020. A total of 50 species belonging to 15 families were found in the surveyed ponds: total 850 individuals with 14 species in 4 families of the order Odonata, total 4,391 individuals with 14 species in 6 families of the order Hemiptera, and total 2,014 individuals with 22 species in 4 families of the order Coleoptera. In overall, total abundance and species numbers were relatively higher than those of artificial pond in natural ponds in which animal and plant ecosystems were well established. In the case of artificial ponds, the number of individuals and species recovered rapidly when reconstituted by introducing aquatic plants, etc. (Pond 1). The nymphs of Odonata were observed largely in ponds without natural enemies such as large fish, and where adults could freely access without interception by artificial structure. Phytophagous Corixidae of the order Hemiptera were abundant, and Haliplidae populations of the order Coleoptera were affected by the distribution of the plants. Accordingly, the major factors affecting aquatic insect abundance were identified as the presence of refuges such as the topography and aquatic plants and presence of predators. Species of the order, Odonata were vulnerable based on these factors. Our results can be useful as basic information for the restoration of wetlands and construction of artificial wetlands or for conservation of species diversity in the future.

  • Objectives: The detection of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is based on behavioral observations. To build a more objective datadriven method for screening and diagnosing ASD, many studies have attempted to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Therefore, the purpose of this literature review is to summarize the studies that used AI in the assessment process and examine whether other behavioral data could potentially be used to distinguish ASD characteristics. Methods: Based on our search and exclusion criteria, we reviewed 13 studies. Results: To improve the accuracy of outcomes, AI algorithms have been used to identify items in assessment instruments that are most predictive of ASD. Creating a smaller subset and therefore reducing the lengthy evaluation process, studies have tested the efficiency of identifying individuals with ASD from those without. Other studies have examined the feasibility of using other behavioral observational features as potential supportive data. Conclusion: While previous studies have shown high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in classifying ASD and non-ASD individuals, there remain many challenges regarding feasibility in the real-world that need to be resolved before AI methods can be fully integrated into the healthcare system as clinical decision support systems.

  • This paper presents a hybrid method to compute the solutions of an optimization Problem. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of an artificial life algorithm and the random tabu search method. The artificial life algorithm has the most important feature called emergence. The emergence is the result of dynamic interaction among the individuals consisting of the system and is not found in an individual. The conventional artificial life algorithm for optimization is a stochastic searching algorithm using the feature of artificial life. Emergent colonies appear at the optimum locations in an artificial ecology. And the locations are the optimum solutions. We combined the feature of random-tabu search method with the conventional algorithm. The feature of random-tabu search method is to divide any given region into sub-regions. The enhanced artificial life algorithm (EALA) not only converge faster than the conventional artificial life algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find all global optimum solutions. The enhanced artificial life algorithm is applied to the optimum design of high-speed, short journal bearings and its usefulness is verified through an optimization problem.

  • Expectations for artificial intelligence technology are increasing, and its utility value is growing, leading to active use in the public sector. The use of artificial intelligence technology in the public sector has a positive impact on aspects such as improving public work efficiency and service quality, enhancing transparency and reliability, and contributing to the development of technology and industries. For these reasons, major countries including Korea are actively developing and using artificial intelligence in the public sector. However, artificial intelligence also presents issues such as bias, inequality, and infringement of individuals' right to self-determination, which are evident even in its utilization in the public sector. Especially the use of artificial intelligence technology in the public sector has significant societal implications, as well as direct implications on limiting and infringing upon the rights of citizens. Therefore, careful consideration is necessary in the introduction and utilization of such technology. This paper comprehensively examines the legal issues that require consideration regarding the introduction of artificial intelligence in the public sector. Methodological discussions that can minimize the risks that may arise from artificial intelligence and maximize the utility of technology were proposed in each process and step of introduction.
