  • Model-based inversion tools for eddy current signals have been developed by combining neural networks and finite element modeling, for quantitative flaw characterization in steam generator tubes. In the present work, interpretation of experimental eddy current signals was carried out in order to validate the developed inversion tools. A database was constructed using the synthetic flaw signals generated by the finite element model. The hybrid neural networks composed of a PNN classifier and BPNN size estimators were trained using the synthetic signals. Experimental eddy current signals were obtained from axisymmetric artificial flaws. Interpretation of flaw signals was conducted by feeding the experimental signals into the neural networks. The interpretation was excellent, which shows that the developed inversion tools would be applicable to the Interpretation of real eddy current signals.

  • Impact resonance testing was carried out on small and large concrete blocks containing several types of artificial flaws respectively. Quantitative analysis of the observed peak frequencies in the impact resonance tests identifies the possible normal modes of concrete blocks containing flaws. and enables to determine the depth and size of the flaws in concrete blocks. In this study, concrete can be treated as a homogeneous and isotropic material. The flaw size and location at each section of artificial flaw series in small and large concrete blocks, determined through two-dimensional scanning of impact point and real-time fast Fourier transform, are in good agreement with real size location, respectively. Consequently, quantitative analysis method of vibration modes in the impact resonance tests, which can be applied for homogeneous and isotropic material, can be useful for the detection of flaws in any case of small and large concrete blocks in this study.

  • The discrimination of flaw shape and sizing is very important subject in the material evaluation for semiconductor and new materials. The aim of this paper is to investigate the spectrum analysis of artificial defect signal captured from steel ball embedded in the resin. The results show that it can be evaluated quantitatively the size of artificial defect, from the amplitude variation of same frequency if the probe with same diameter and focal length is used. Comparing with the amplitude variation of the high frequency component and low frequency component obtained from the distance of defect center position, it can be estimated steel ball and flat bottm defect.

  • The behavior of fatigue was studied by using low carbon steel bar with microhole(artificial small defect) under the condition of rotary bending stress which is made artificially at smooth surface and round notch root. The results obtained can be summerized; The behavior of non-propagating cracks which are produced at both tips of small defect occurred to dissymmetry, and it is found to be double size of small defect. For the range of l>lc, threshold stress intensity is constant. However, for the range of l

  • Magnetostrictive sensors which can be used effectively to detect flaws in pipe were fabricated. The optimal conditions to obtain the maximum generation efficiency of the ultrasonic wave were established. In case of the used steel pipe the optimal magnetic field was $250{\sim}350Oe$ and the coil width of 15mm showed the best efficiency for generating a wave with the frequency of 180 kHz. In the best condition, the wave can propagate further than 50m without serious attenuation. The amplitude of the ultrasonic wave reflected from artificial flaw had a good linear relationship to the cross-sectional area of the flaw.

  • A Failure or degradation of reactor upper head penetration is a recurring problem due to long term operation at nuclear power plants. And a flaw in the reactor upper head penetration has caused unplanned plant shutdown for repair as well as high economic impact on the plants. Consequently, a detection of flaws is of the utmost importance. Prior to the replacement of reactor upper head penetration, some utilities have repaired the flaws of reactor upper head penetration generated by overlay weld. Until now, only the base metal in reactor upper head penetration has been inspected according to 10 CFR 50.55a and ASME code case N-729-1. Accordingly, it is difficult to detect manufacturing defects and repair defects in overlay weld. This paper presents a case study on the application of Time of Flight Diffraction technique for reactor head penetration mockup with artificial flaws in overlay weld. This study offers a way to understand the flaws detected in reactor upper head penetration overlay weld.

  • A failure or degradation of reactor upper head penetration is a troublesome problem at Nuclear Power Plants. A flaw in the reactor upper head penetration can result in unplanned plant shutdown for repair, and cause serious economic losses on the plants. Consequently, a detection of flaws is a matter of more importance. Until now, only the base metal, not including J-groove weld, in reactor upper head penetration has been inspected in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a and ASME code case N-729-1 requirements. Accordingly, it is rather difficult to detect manufacturing defects and repair defects in J-groove weld. This paper presents a case study on the application of Time of Flight Diffraction UT technique to examine the J-groove weld in reactor head penetration using reactor head penetration mockup with artificial flaws. We expect that this study result will offer a way to understand the non-destructive examination technology for J-groove weld in reactor upper head penetration.

  • The standard(KS D 3631) should be obey for using fuel gas pipe in Korea and a carbon steel pipe is coated with synthetic resine for protecting the corrosion. The coating is just performed for anti-corrosion, and actual strength of pipe is given by the carbon steel pipe when the fuel gas is transported. When the flaws are occurred in the steel pipe, the estimation method which is used for residual strength is necessary. But the suitable method is not exist for applying the fuel gas pipe. Eventually, the residual strength is estimated by overseas regulation such as ASME B31G or DNV RP F101. But the method based on the relative regulations are not sufficiently valid and it can not estimate the 85% over even. Therefore, the test was performed for validation with pipe specimen. The specimen was made with artificial flaw. The test results showed the certain differences according to flaw depth and DNV RP F101 is suitable to estimate the residual strength in Korea. The results in this paper contain in case of the severe flaw depth and suitable mode for Korea, so the result can be expected as valuable and widely used in various field.

  • Ultrasonic pattern recognition is the most effective approach to the problem of discriminating types of flaws in weldments based on ultrasonic flaw signals. In spite of significant progress in the research on this methodology, it has not been widely used in many practical ultrasonic inspections of weldments in industry. Hence, for the convenient application of this approach in many practical situations, we develop an intelligent ultrasonic signature classification software which can discriminate types of flaws in weldments based on their ultrasonic signals using various tools in artificial intelligence such as neural networks. This software shows the excellent performance in an experimental problem where flaws in weldments are classified into two categories of cracks and non-cracks. This performance demonstrates the high possibility of this software as a practical tool for ultrasonic flaw classification in weldments.
