  • With the advancement of technology, there are almost no constraints on expression in virtual reality (VR) art; however, it still has some limitations. VR artists can be largely classified into two groups in terms of style. The first group is artists who create their works as a live performance. In this case, a major limitation is that the artist cannot see how the audience reacts to the work because he/she wears a VR device while performing, and the audience cannot fully experience the work, since they view it only on-screen without any VR devices. This problem can be solved if all members of the audience wear VR devices; however, that requires astronomical costs and brings about another problem related to device management. If the price of VR devices decreases as technology develops, it may help solve this problem. The second group is exhibition artists who regularly display their works online. In this case, the limitation is that their work using VR remains only in the virtual digital space. In this case, a solution may be creating space in exhibition halls, and providing VR devices to audience members in existing art exhibitions.

  • The ICT-based curation as a series of experiences with the mobile exhibition-guide applications or guide programs in art galleries helps visitors fully immersed in the exhibition and allows them to have more informative and convenient guide experience at art galleries. This study aims to verify how the factors of ICT-based curation affects the commitment and satisfaction of visitors at art galleries, figure out whether the visitors' commitment has effects on their satisfaction, and then finally test the impact of their commitment and satisfaction on their revisit intention. In order to validate the cause-and-effect relationships between these factors, the ICT-based curation in this paper is categorized into five factors - gamification, quality of image/video information, quality of sound/text information, contextual offer, and instant connectivity. The main results of the study are as follows. First, only the gamification has significantly positive effects on the commitment of art gallery visitors, while other two factors - the instant connectivity, and the quality of sound/text information - have significantly positive effects on the satisfaction of visitors. Second, the commitment of visitors also has significantly positive effects on their satisfaction. Third, the commitment of the visitors don't have significantly positive relationship with their intention of revisit, but the satisfaction of the visitors have significantly positive relationship with their intention of revisit.

  • Objective: The present study suggested practical measures for successful patent registration based on a review of success and failure cases of patent application filed based on inventions obtained from physical ergonomics research. Background: The protection of intellectual property (IP) contributes to economic growth and competitiveness and facilitates innovation and creativity. IP rights are pursued on research findings for effective technology transfer and commercialization; however, a patent application can be rejected if patentability requirements such as patent eligible subject matter, utility for industrial application, novelty, or non-obviousness are not satisfied. Method: Three successful and three failed cases of patent applications based on physical ergonomics research were reviewed, critical reasons for their successes and failures were examined, and measures were proposed to avoid failures in patent registration. Results: The following measures were identified based on the patent application case review. First, abstract ideas including logical procedures and/or mathematical formulas need to include use of tangible apparatus and methods in idea realization. Second, the provision of grace period inventor disclosure exception needs to be properly followed in case an invention is disclosed before filing of patent application. Lastly, a comprehensive analysis of prior art published or publicly known anywhere in the world and a claim preparation of distinguished, non-trivial features compared to prior art solutions are needed to avoid possible violation of novelty and non-obviousness. Application: The proposed measures can help to prepare a patent application with patent eligibility.

  • At the first time in South Korea, the state of the art acoustic systems were mounted on the R/V Tamgu 21. The acoustic systems are an EK80 broadband echosounder (18, 38, 70, 120, 200 and 333 kHz) which has two beam modes such as continuous wave (narrowband) and frequency modulation (broadband), an ME70 multibeam echosounder (70-120 kHz), and a SH90 sonar (111.5-115.5 kHz). Acoustic data from broadband mode have a very short range resolution, a large detection range, a high signal to noise ratio, and a wide and consecutive frequency response. In ME70, each individual beam consisted in a multibeam plays a role as a spilt beam. The first trial of the cutting edge acoustic system installed on the R/V Tamgu 21 was conducted from 15 Feb to 29 Feb 2016 in East Sea, South Sea and East China Sea. The properties of the acoustic systems were elucidated and exploratory results from three systems were exhibited. Lastly, issues which should be considered and future research plan are mentioned.
