A study on the Contemporary Art Inspiration in Contemporary Fashion Design (현대패션에 나타난 Contemporary Art Inspiration 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest more specific method to express art connected to the factor of fashion design by classifying fashion case combined with contemporary art, which is expressed through visual factor of fashion, analyzing exchange phenomenon, trend and change aspect of art and fashion and researching its expression type under the background of art preference phenomenon of contemporary art. From the result of measuring the frequency of contemporary art type, it was found that various types and artists' works were applied to fashion industry. Therefore, the scope of contemporary art, which is used for fashion, is being enlarged and new type is appearing every year continuously. Especially, its frequency was highest in 2008 S/S. In addition, it was found that it was more frequent in S/S season rather than in F/W season. From the result of analyzing expression method of contemporary art inspiration shown in fashion by classifying it into structure aspect, print aspect and 3D decoration aspect, in most cases, the contemporary art was used as a print or pattern for dress or accessory. The print aspect could be divided into geometric abstraction pattern, expressional abstract pattern, trompe-l'oeil pattern, graffiti pattern, picture image pattern and cartoon pattern in detail.

  • This study is a part of the integrated investigation of the design of Yves Saint Laurent, and aims at examining the background of the appearance of art inspiration which the artistic quality and originality are particularly seen. And also, I would like to examine the source of the power that transcends periods, dealing with issues in the design. From the mid 1960 to 1970, Yves Saint Laurent who leaded the global fashion trend, displayed the Art Inspiration works with the innovation of fashion in Paris, rediscovery of the trends and colors in Modern Art, and background of Entourage and so forth. He brought in the various artistic genres to the fashion, and his Haute Couture collections which were created by the passion for the movie and theater art, expressed the freedom through his strong identity in the Modern Art & Culture and the atmosphere of that period. Eventually his works are reappeared transcending the generations as the fundamental power of Modernity, through the restricted line of his own, strong contrast of colors, and insight for the future.

  • The purpose of this research was to give the basic educational sources that could nurture creative fashion designers for the creative advancement of the fashion industry. After investigating and categorizing the ideation behind designer collections in four fashion capitals - Paris, London, Milan and New York, the materialization of concepts was analyzed in relation to inspiration and design elements. As a result, design inspiration was classified into figures, artworks and art trends, historicity of fashion, regional features, natural objects, artificial objects, abstract concepts, clothing for specific occasions, events, and others. This study found that inspiration for fashion design comes from various fields, and that creative design skills can be nurtured through ideation training using a wide variety of subjects.

  • In terms of expression, beauty illustration has become more diverse and innovative. Because of continued unique creative activities, more novelty has been pursued. In this study, beauty illustration in new artistic and decorative images was used to investigate the basic concepts of art activities, illustration and beauty illustration and make up for beauty illustration which adheres to traditional and classical expressions. In this study, the following results were obtained: First, in terms of expression of beauty illustration, the work with art expressions are still poor compared to other fields such as fashion illustration. Therefore, it is necessary to attempt beauty illustration of a new image which expresses artistic emotions. Second, by using an artistic technique called 'paper sculpture', a semi-solid shape has been completed, and a decorative beauty illustration was created. People get new inspiration through beautiful and innocent art pieces, which in turn motivate to create new expression. New art activities which take a human body as an art support beauty activities through picture and more sensitive inspiration. It was attempted to express other emotion and beauty by observing a single piece of work. A new possibility in beauty illustration which is differentiated from other art activities is proposed and its domain is developed.

  • The multilateral attempt for present applications of art school of thought and expression is leading modern fashion as a chapter of various artistic expression. In fashion, historic art thinking which predominated the period are source of optional inspiration not simply being generated, culminated and disappear but layout principles which can reemerge as periodical needs. In other words, the past styles are the source of inspiration of new trend of the present time and will serve as the text that give birth to yet another trend. In this study, I conducted the research on the layout principles of Modernism Architecture in aspects of pure visibility and the layout characteristics. And I analyzed cases of modern fashion which were appling architectural layout principles in the view point of formal construction dimension. As the result, the layout principles of Modernism Architecture have the characteristics of diagram linearity, geometric planarity and exclusive closing. And I was applying the architectural layout principles of Modernism to fashion. The layout principles of Modernism Architecture have the tendency of lacking history types, abstract plane partition and reductionism purity in fashion. The meaning of this study is follows: The characteristics of art school of thought are given shape by appling & analysing the architectural layout principles of historical art school of thought to modern fashion in the view point of formal construction dimension. The applied possibility of historical art school of thought as the source of inspiration about the fashion design is extended.

Pop Art-Inspired Fashion (패션에 나타난 팝 아트의 영향)

  • Throughout the history of fashion and fashion collections, fashion design has been influenced by fine arts. Philosophy and concept of fine arts has been inspiration on the development of fashion design which brings on the close interrelation between fine arts and modern fashion. In order to analyze the affect of fine arts such as Pop art on fashion this study inquires into new perspective that considers different social contexts on the premise that acknowledges the essential difference between the genre of fine arts and design. This study researches the influence of Pop art which has been inspiration on fashion designers since the birth in the 1960s and often appears in recent fashion trends. In view of the results achieved in this study, Pop art-inspired fashion does not concern the aesthetic contemplation of everyday life in western society anonymously as in Pop art but deals with pop art as new ideas in a way that adopts images randomly from designer's convenience which is equivalent to the conception of pastiche. In addition, it was inferred that Peter Pan syndrome exert influence as a mental process and Kidult trend operate on Pop art-inspired fashion as a social phenomenon. On the basis of the theoretical background, the formative features in Pop art-inspired fashion from Spring/Summer 2000 to Spring/Summer 2004 collection has been analyzed. The results fall on the following four categories; those are the use of Pop color which resembles the Hard-edge technique in Pop art, direct appropriation of Pop art such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichitenstein's works on clothes and accessories, adaptation of Pop art's subject using brand names of mass products or icons in mass culture as design motives, and application of representation method in Pop art such as Andy Warhol's silk screen techniques or Tom Wesselman's composition of pictures.

The Creativity of Art to Wear reflected on fashion Design in the late 1990s (1990년대 후반 패션디자인에 반영된 예술의상의 창의성)

  • The purpose of the present study was to improve the artistic qualities in the future fashion design by investigating how the art to wear was applied to the inspiration in the modern fashion design in the late 1990s. For this purpose the present paper examined characteristics in art to wear and their impact on modern fashion design in the late 1990s. Distinguished from the traditional costume, art to wear disregarded a fixed concept on design elements such as the socio-cultural images, materials, and forms. The artists in art to wear freely expressed their "selves" and their individuality to their works in a variety of ways. In fashion design in the late 1990s the creative characteristics of art to wear were reflected in four ways: (1) eco-look, (2) humor, (3) deformation, (4) materials. The present study suggests that the creativity of the art to wear can establish the potentials and possibility in modern fashion design, and art to wear can be a crucial mediator in opening art into the real world.

  • The Purposes of this article are to find Christian religion and Germany expressionism which were background of Nolde's art and analyze formation and special quality, expression mode of holy picture. If synthesize contents of these analysis, we could know that faith is giving religious inspiration continuously during his lift to Protestant experience through the Bible. Though there is some difference by time but we could foretell that he accomplished modern holy picture of new sensitivity by doing individual expression with equal Bible subject traditionally in 20th century that change unlike existent holy picture with these motive power. That is, with new trend which religious inspiration as imagination which spring up in experience that is not experience of artificial Christian religion is then expressionism various that historically, he accomplished unique holy picture to related each other with the historic event.

  • This study examined concepts and expressional relations with Rene Maggritte works that had influence upon design expressions of Shiro Kuramata who brought name of things to the extreme to give new values and functions at the end. Rene Maggritte who was a representative surrealism painter in Belgium had a lot of influence and inspiration on the art world including pop art and conceptual art in the middle of the 20th century and so many modern artists. Rene Maggritte unreasonably placed object of ordinary things that people could know to combine them and to make people's thought be free from ideas. Shiro Kuramata worked at wide areas including the space, lighting, furniture and products to be well known as a designer who could create concepts. Shiro Kuramata designed indoor space and furniture not by making forms but by being free from customary names and concepts of things to examine substance and to discover unlimited possibility and to create new visual functions. And, such a thing made people be free from names and concepts that they cognized for a long time, and it brought freedom to things. This study investigated correlations of work concepts and expressions of Rene Maggritte and Shiro Kuramata to bring new inspiration and expansion to people's thought methods and design methodology regarding concepts of things.

Research on Aesthetic Characteristics of Fabric Expression Technique of Art to Wear - Focusing on Art to Wear artists in the U.S.A. -

  • The role of fabric now directly related with the expression of the beauty of clothing and it provides new and creative ideas. This study was aimed at reviewing basic data that can be used in systematic design development through fabric expression for today's fashion designers who must study unique, original fashion design development. For systematic development of design technique through fabric expression, fabric expression methods and characteristics, aesthetic characteristics and fabric design of 'art to wear' were reviewed and the results are as follows. First, the highly wrought fabric expression of art to wear was confirmed to be comprehending a message within itself. Second, aesthetic characteristics of fabric expression used in art to wear can be classified as decorativeness, extensity, 2-D pictorialness, handicraft, compounding and rearrangement, and 3-D characteristics. Third, the 6 aesthetic characteristics have unique design features and aesthetic categories. The understanding the fabric expression techniques through study on the classification of the fabric expression in 'art to wear' is expected to be extended to proposition of creative direction and inspiration of modern fashion.
