Carbon Medicine in Ancient China

  • In traditional Chinese medicine, some herbs are used after toasting or roasting. The process is called "Zhi Tan" in Chinese, which means charring, and the herbs after the treatment is called carbon medicine. Carbon medicine is widely used to arrest bleeding in traditional Chinese medicine. The paper introduces the records, development and applications of carbon medicine in ancient China. The earliest record found about carbon medicine was in the remains of Han dynasty (BC206-A.D.8). The paper also introduces the process of charring herbs and mechanism of carbon medicine in arresting bleeding. Calcium iron and tan released during the charring are believed as main factors for arresting bleeding, helped with porous surface structure of active carbon.

A herbalogical study on the plants of Violaceae in Korea (한국산 제비꽃과 식물에 관한 본초학적 연구)

  • Objective : For the purpose of developing Korean herbalogy of the plants to Violaceae in Korea, the literatures of the successive generations have been thoroughly investigated to prepare this article. Methods : The examined herbalogical books and research paper which published at home and abroad. Results : 1. Violaceae plants (raised in Korea) are devided into 1 classes with 57 species. Among them, 14 species in 1 classes were found serviceable, which indicates 32 % of all Violaceae plants. 2. The herb is main medicinal part if medicinal plants in the Violaceae, which is used in 14 species. 3. According to the nature and flavor of medicinal plants in the Violaceae, they were classified into cold 8 species, and cool 7; bitter taste 8; acrid taste and little bitter taste 6 in the order. 4. According to the meridian propism of medicinal plants in the Violaceae, they were classified into liver meridian 6 species, heart meridian 3 species in the order. 5. According to the properties and principal curative action, they were classified into drugs for clearing heat, removing toxins 12 species; drugs for alleviate edema 7, and drugs for arresting bleeding 6 in the order. 6. There were no toxic species in the Violaceae family. Conclusion : There were totaled to 1 genera and 57 species in Violaceae in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 1genera, 14 species, some 32% in total.

A Study on Effect of Sutaehwan for treatment of Abortus habitualis (활태(滑胎)의 치료(治療)에 사용(使用)된 수태환(壽胎丸)의 효능(效能)에 대(對)한 문헌적(文獻的) 고찰(考察))

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Sutaehwan(壽胎丸) for treatment Abortus habitualis(滑胎). I came to conculsion after considering literatures of every generation on the effects of Sutaehwan and then came to get some conclusion as follows. 1. Sutaehwan(壽胎丸) was designed to prescribe for treatment of Abortus habitualis(滑胎) 2. Sutaehwan(壽胎丸) was made use of Fetal Restlessness(胎動不安) caused by Kidney Deficiency(腎虛). 3. Sutaehwan(壽胎丸) was always used by the origin prescription itself, also used the modified prescription and the additional prescription. 4. Sutaehwan(壽胎丸) is the best quality prescription for treatment Abortus habitualis(滑胎) that due to Deficiency of Liver-Kidney Essence. Sutaehwan(壽胎丸) contains four specific herbs like Dodder Seed(兎絲子), Taxillus Twig(桑寄生), Himalayan Teasel Root(續斷), Donkey-hide Gelatin(阿膠). Dodder Seed(兎絲子) is effective the Tonifying Kidney, the Invigorating Yang and the Supplementing Essence. Taxillus Twig(桑寄生) is effective the Nourishing Blood and the Tonifying Kidney. Himalayan Teasel Root(續斷) is effective the Tonifying Liver-Kidney and the Regulation Blood. Donkey-hide Gelatin(阿膠) is effective the Tonifying Liver Blood, the Arresting Bleeding and the Supplementing Kidney Yin Fluid.

Influence of Five Herbal Medicines on Cytochrome P450 3A4 Drug-Metabolizing Enzymes in Human Liver Microsomes (수종 지혈 한약물이 Cytochrome P450 3A4 활성에 미치는 영향)

  • Objects : The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of five herbal medicines on cytochrome P450 3A4 drug-metabolizing enzymes in human liver microsomes. Methods : To use human liver microsomes, an extract of five herbal medicines, which are Artemisia princeps Pampan, Sophora jeponica Linne, Panax notoginseng F. H. Chen, Lithospermum Erythrorhizon Sieb., and Cirsium maackii Maxim, which together are called Jihyulyak(止血藥, drugs for arresting bleeding, hemostatics), was co-incubated and measured for relative enzyme activity in incubation condition compared to ketoconazole, a representative inhibitor of CYP 3A4. Results : We showed that all five of the traditional herbal medicines had no inhibition effect of CYP 3A4 at 10, 20, 30, 40, and $50{\mu}g/ml$ doses in human liver microsomes, although Sophora japonica Linne(SJL) showed a little inhibition at about 81% inhibition rate of control. However, this result is not enough to prove that SJL has a CYP 3A4 inhibition effect. Moreover, we can't make sure that those rates had significant induction effect on CYP 3A4. Conclusions : The result of this study could support that those herbal medicines are safer than chemical drugs, even if this is the basic step to prove that result.
