  • The arrester's condition is related directly to protected equipment's safety. The most important is, therefore, arrester aging diagnosis. In this study, arrester aging diagnosis expert system is implemented to use JESS shell-engine and the leakage current detection technique.

  • The primary function of ZnO lightning arrester is to protect transmission and distribution equipment from overvoltages and to absorb electrical energy resulting from lightning or switching surges and form temporary overvoltage. However, ZnO lightning arrester are known to exhibit an increases in resistive current with time, the rate of increase being exacerbated with increasing applied voltage and ambient temperature. So, it is important to the leakage current measurement of ZnO lightning arrester. In addition, since the resistive leakage current caused by deterioration of ZnO lightning arrester mainly caused an increase of the third harmonic component, thereby it is possible the arrester degradation diagnosis by measuring the third harmonic component in the total leakage current. The leakage current and third harmonic component are measured and used to investigate the degradation diagnosis of ZnO element of arrester. Also the SEM photography is used to investigate the change of crystal structure of ZnO element with degradation.

  • This paper describes the principles and structures of an expert system for arrester diagnosis. The expert system analyzes and decides the arrester condition by total leakage current, its harmonic component, and temperature because the deterioration of arresters appeared in an increase of leakage current and surface temperature of it. Additionally, influence of system voltage harmonics and ambient temperatures on leakage current changes were considered in the design. The expert system is consisted of a data acquisition module and a computer for monitoring. The acquired analog data are digitalized and transmitted to the computer by an optical link which is free from interference.

  • In this paper, we develope a diagnosis device for ZnO arrester by detecting the leakage current in service. To diagnose the deterioration of ZnO arrester, the device detects the total leakage current which flows between an arrester and ground, and analyzes the resistive current(third harmonic current) which is an indicator of deterioration of ZnO arrester. We use the optical cable which can transfer a detected data without a noise, also use a microprocessor for a data storage, processing, and trend analysis. Experiment are executed to verify its performance in laboratory and the results show that the diagnosis device exactly detects the total leakage current and the resistive current, so it can diagnose the deterioration of ZnO arrester. Also the leakage current of ZnO arrester is detected using the developed diagnostic device in field, these results are presented.

  • In this paper, surface temperatures of ZnO arresters as a function of ambient temperatures and leakage currents were experimentally investigated. The variations of the leakage current was below 10 uA, which comes about $4.5\%$ of the normal leakage current. Temperature differences between the ambient and the surface of arresters were not shown until $150\%$ to the normal leakage current, and were remarkable over $200\%$. From the results, we deduced a couple of polynomials which enables the calculation of the leakage current by the measurement of surface temperature. Tests on used arresters have shown the same results as the experimental one. Also, we expect that an arrester diagnosis is possible by measuring the surface temperature of them after more studies on the effect of wind, moisture penetration, and arrester types.

  • In this paper, we developed a diagnosis device for ZnO arrester to detect on-line leakage current and acquire data from the power distribution system. The arrester is important power equipment used in power transmission and distribution systems to protect the generator and the main transformer from surge and overvoltage. First of all we developed a diagnosis device for ZnO arrester leakage current. And then we detect the total leakage current by the developed device without disconnecting the arrester ground wire and analysis the 3rd order harmonic by Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) to diagnose the ZnO arrester deterioration. With measuring the total current and the resistive current of power distribution system in operation, we analysis the trend of resistive current component in the total leakage current. We expect the result will be promote the method to protect electrical utility and customer from accident.

  • Detection of small leakage current is the most important technique in arrester diagnosis. Various types of leakage current detector have been commercialized, but they are not available for the railway arresters including voltage harmonics, and do not furnish enough information needed for arrester diagnosis. This paper describes the development of a leakage current detector which is suitable for the railway arresters. The detector is consisted of a sensor unit with amplifier, an optical linker and main analyzer. Frequency bandwidth and measuring range of the detector is 9[Hz]$\~$850[Hz] and 50[uA]$\~$5[mA], respectively.

  • Various devices for diagnosing arrester soundness are suggested, and most of them simply measure magnitude of leakage current. However, such kind of devices do not provide detailed information needed for the diagnosis. In this study, we designed and fabricated a new arrester analyzer by means of measuring the magnitude, the phase vs. wave height and the harmonics of total leakage currents. The analyzer is composed of a current detector, an optical linker, and a main device operated by a microprocessor. The main device is connected with leakage current detector optically not to be influenced by electromagnetic interference. The analyzer developed measures only total leakage currents, but analyzes most parameters needed for the arrester diagnostics.

  • In general, ZnO lighting arrester are known to exhibit an increases in resistive current with time, the rate of increase being exacerbated with increasing applied voltage. In addition, since the resistive leakage current caused by deterioration of ZnO lighting arrester mainly caused an increase of the third harmonic component, thereby it is possible the arrester degradation diagnosis by measuring the third harmonic component in the total leakage current. So, in this paper, we presents a leakage current measuring and analysis system of 18[kV] ZnO lighting arrester.

  • This paper describes a new measurement method of resistive current and the technique of deterioration diagnosis for ZnO element. The consequence of current increasing (resistive current) with time is the eventual attainment of a state of thermal instability that may lead to arrester failure. So, it is very important to measure a leakage current of ZnO arrester installed at on-state. For the high-precision and more reliability, an iron core, which has a very high relative permeability, was used for increasing detection sensitivity, and we also used the personal computer for the data storage and program and analysis. And we have verified the reliability and performance of the sensing device through several laboratory tests.
