  • We analyzed the measured acoustic field to explore the characteristics of a horizontal coherence in shallow water. Signal spatial coherence data were obtained in the continental shelf off the east coast of Korea using a horizontal line array. The array was deployed on the bottom of 130 m water depth and a sound source was towed at 26 m depth in the source-receiver ranges of 1-13 ㎞. The source transmitted 200 ㎐ pure tone. Topography and temperature profiles along the source track were measured to investigate the relationship between the horizontal coherence and environment variations. The beam bearing disturbance and array signal gain degradation is examined as parameters of horizontal coherence. The results show that the bearing disturbance is about ± 8° and seems to be affected by temporal variations of temperature caused by internal waves. The array signal gains show degradation more than 5㏈ by the temporal and spatial variations of temperature and by the down-sloped topography.

  • Conventional radar antenna systems are susceptible to performance degradation caused by unwanted signals received via the antenna sidelobes and/or mainlobes. Adaptive array systems offer possible solution to this interference problem by automatically steering nulls to unwanted signals providing significant system performance improvement. Another important andvantage of the adaptive array is its self-optimization capability which uses the collective incoming noise data for the nulling purposes. This paper provides a tutorial introduction to adaptive arrays as well as some new development of recent research in this area. Optimum link between the antenna theory and signal processing has been sought by illustrating the gain patterns and output signal-to-noise ratio. Signal acqusition methods are shown including a new attempt of the use of spread-spectrum techniques in conjuction with array systems.

  • An adaptive array system can effectively remove all received interferences by using adaptive algorithms even though the received signal condition is not known. The conventional adaptive array systems, however, cannot remove all interferences adaptively and converge very slowly when the eigenvalue spread of the input covariance matrix is large. In the paper, a new adaptive array system called an automatic gain controller (AGC) Applebaum array and its control algorithm are proposed to overcome the performance degradation of conventional Applebaum array in multiple interference conditions. The performance analysis of the proposed AGC Applebaum array is described under the condition of multiple narrowband interferences. Simulation results show the array output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the AGC Applebaum array increases by 30dB compared to that of the conventional Applebaum array in the simulation condition. The gain of the AGC Applebaum array in the incident direction of a weaker interference is also shown to be lower than that of the conventional Applebaum array.

  • In a traditional phased array radar, closely spaced antenna elements transmit a scaled version of single waveform to maximize the signal energy. On the contrary, a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar consists of widely separated antennas and transmits an arbitrary waveform from each antenna element. These waveforms and spatial diversity enable superior capabilities compared with phased array radar. At high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the detection performance of the MIMO radar is better than the phased array radar due to the diversity gains. However, the phased array radar outperforms the MIMO radar at low SNR, due to the energy maximization. In this paper, we investigate the compromised scheme between the MIMO radar and the phased array radar. Employing the MIMO radar equipped with phased array elements, the compromised scheme achieves both array gain and diversity gain. Also, we compare the performance degradation when the steering direction is incorrect.

  • In this paper, we propose design of hardware based on a high speed digital signal processor (DSP) and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) for real-time suppression of fixed pattern noise (FPN) using hardware neural networks (HNN) in cooled infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) imaging system FPN appears a limited operation by temperature in observable images which applies to non-uniformity correction for infrared detector. These have very important problems because it happen serious problem for other applications as well as degradation for image quality in our system Signal processing architecture for our system operates reference gain and offset values using three tables for low, normal, and high temperatures. Proposed method creates virtual tables to separate for overlapping region in three offset tables. We also choose an optimum tenn of temperature which controls weighted values of HNN using mean values of pixels in three regions. This operates gain and offset tables for low, normal, and high temperatures from mean values of pixels and it recursively don't have to do an offset compensation in operation of our system Based on experimental results, proposed method showed improved quality of image which suppressed FPN by change of temperature distribution from an observational image in real-time system.

  • A down hole vertical seismic array is a sequence of instruments installed at various depths in the earth to record the ground motion at multiple points during an earthquake. Numerous studies demonstrate the unique utility of vertical seismic arrays for studying in situ site response and soil behavior. Examples are given of analyses made at two sites to show the value of data from vertical seismic arrays. The sites examined are the Lotung, Taiwan SMART1 array and a new site installed at Jingliao, Taiwan. Details of the installation of the Jingliao array are given. ARX models are theoretically the correct process models for vertical wave propagation in the layered earth, and are used to linearly map deeper sensor input signals to shallower sensor output signals. An example of Event 16 at the Lotung array is given. This same data, when examined in detail with a Bayesian inference model, can also be explained by nonlinear filters yielding commonly accepted soil degradation curves. Results from applying an ARMAX model to data from the Jingliao vertical seismic array are presented. Estimates of inter-transducer soil increment resonant frequency, shear modulus, and damping ratio are presented. The shear modulus varied from 50 to 150 MPa, and damping ratio between 8% and 15%. A new hardware monitoring system - TerraScope - is an affordable 4-D down-hole seismic monitoring system based on independent, microprocessor-controlled sensor Pods. The Pods are nominally 50 mm in diameter, and about 120 mm long. An internal 16-bit micro-controller oversees all aspects of instrumentation, eight programmable gain amplifiers, and local signal storage.

  • This paper proposes a speech enhancement method through the process of combining the gain function with spectrum subtraction method in the two microphone array with close spacing. A speech enhancement method that uses a gain function estimated by the SNR (Signal-to Noise Ratio) based on the multi frequency band coherence function causes the performance degradation in high correlation between input noises of two channels. A new speech enhancement method is proposed where the weighted gain function is used by combining the gain function from the spectral subtraction. The performance evaluation of the proposed method was shown by comparison with PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) value which is an objective quality evaluation test provided by the ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union Telecommunication). In the PESQ tests, the maximum 0.217 of PESQ value is improved in the various background noise environments.

  • In this paper, we propose a signal readout system with small area and low power consumption for CNT sensor arrays. The proposed system consists of signal readout circuitry, a digital controller, and UART I/O. The key components of the signal readout circuitry are 64 transimpedance amplifiers (TIA) and SAR-ADC with 11-bit resolution. The TIA adopts an active input current mirror (AICM) for voltage biasing and current amplification of a sensor. The proposed architecture can reduce area and power without sampling rate degradation because the 64 TIAs share a variable gain amplifier (VGA) which needs large area and high power due to resistive feedback. In addition, the SAR-ADC is designed for low power with modified algorithm where the operation of the lower bits can be skipped according to an input voltage level. The operation of ADC is controlled by a digital controller based on UART protocol. The data of ADC can be monitored on a computer terminal. The signal readout circuitry was designed with 0.13${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. It occupies the area of 0.173 $mm^2$ and consumes 77.06${\mu}W$ at the conversion rate of 640 samples/s. According to measurement, the linearity error is under 5.3% in the input sensing current range of 10nA - 10${\mu}A$. The UART I/O and the digital controller were designed with 0.18${\mu}m$ CMOS technology and their area is 0.251 $mm^2$.
