Ethanol washing with distillation as a cleanup process of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH)-contaminated soil was investigated in this study. A multistage ethanol washing with distillation process was applied to three different types of soil, i.e., sandy soil, alluvial soil, and clay with the initial concentration of benzo(a)pyrene 10 mg/kg, benz(a)anthracene 250 mg/kg, and pyrene 100 mg/kg soil. Ethanol was selected as washing solvent because of its high PAH removal efficiency, low cost, and non-toxicity comparing to the other solvent such as isopropyl alcohol and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The satisfactory results (i.e. lower than benzo(a)pyrene 1 mg/kg, pyrene 10 mg/kg, benz(a)anthracene 25 mg/kg, which are the Canada or the Netherlands soil standard) for three types of soils were obtained by at most five-six times washing. It was suggested that organic content in soil decreased the removal efficiency by ethanol washing.

The field of printing use to pressurization ink using screen gassamer that is called screen printing. Existing cleaning solvent using screen printing are the organic solvents including aromatic compounds carried with poisonous and stench. Besides, cleaning method of current screen printing are for the most part mixed cleaning method of dipping and polish. Using 1,1,1-TCE, CFC-113 alternative system cleaning solvent be substituted for existing cleaning solvent against screen printing ink measured the cleaning efficiency according to gravimetric analysis method and property change of gassamer according to Image Analyzer. Also, Cleaning process system carry with excellent cleaning efficiency studied which was proposed new cleaning process including ultrasonic and vibration cleaning process be substituted for existing mixed cleaning method of dipping and polish.
A novel fabrication of the patterned surfaces in the polymer films was demonstrated by using the self-organizing character of the block copolymers of polystyrene-b-oligothiophenes and polystyrene-b-aromatic amide dendron. Hexagonally arranged open pores with a micrometer-size were spontaneously formed by casting the polymer solutions under a moist air flow. The amphiphilic character of the block copolymers played the crucial role as a surfactant to stabilize the inverse emulsion of water in the organic solvent, and subsequently the aggregated structure of the hydrophilic oligothiophene or aromatic amide dendron segments remained on the interiors of the micropores. The chemical composition on the top of the surface of the microporous films was characterized by energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) or a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (ToF-SIMS). The characterizations clearly indicated that the patterned surfaces in the self-organized block copolymer films with the hexagonally ordered microporous structures were fabricated in a single step.
During automotive painting, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with the paint solvents are emitted to the atmosphere. Most VOC emissions come from spraying operations via the use of solvent-based paints, as the spraybooth air picks up gaseous solvent compounds and overspray paint materials. The VOCs consist of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, alcohols, and glycolethers. Most VOCs (some hydrophilic VOCs are captured and retained in the water.) are captured by an adsorption system and thermally oxidized. In this paper, the processes involved in automotive painting and in VOC control are reviewed. The topics include: painting operations (briefly), the nature of VOCs, VOC-control processes (adsorption, absorption, biological removal, and thermal oxidation) and energy recovery from VOCs using a fuel reformer and a fuel cell, and the beneficial use of paint sludge.
This study shows the research of causes of deterioration of the amber from foreign cases. It also presents the conservation treatment as well as tests to examine the effect of the organic solvents on the amber in order to find reversible and safe reinforcing agent which will prevent further damage of the artefact. The result showed that there was no noticeable change in the weight of the artefact as well as on the appearance of the surface when Mineral spirit(White spirit), which is aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and Xylene, aromatic hydrocarbons group was applied. Reinforcement and restoration was carried out using Paraloid(R) B67, which has a broad option for the solvent, in Xylene. Finally, it is recommended that the use of polar organic solvent in the conservation treatment of amber artefacts should be limited.
An efficient method for the preparation of 8-benzylidene-4-phenyl-3,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-quinazolin-2-ones/thiones from the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with cyclohexanone and urea or thiourea in the presence of Tetrabutylammonium hexatungstate, $[TBA]_2[W_6O_{19}]$, as an efficient, inexpensive catalyst under thermal and solvent-free conditions has been developed. Good yields, short reaction times, straightforward workup, reusability of the catalyst, and green conditions are the most obvious advantages of this procedure.

In order to visualize the distribution of workplace of which mixed solvent level in air exceeded the TLV of 1.0 (ACGIH), 17 thinners used in 44 painting workplaces were analysed with gas chromatography, and their levels in air were compaired with. 1. For detection rate of solvents in thinner was highest in case of toluene (76.4%), and decreased in orders of xylene (70.6%), methylisobutyl ketone (35.3%), acetone (35.3%), methyl ethyl ketone (23.5%), isopropylacohol (17.6%), n-hexane (17.6%), styrene (11.8%), and ethylacetate (11.8%). Average number of solvents detected was 3.0. 2. Detection rates of organic solvent by component category was highest in cases of aromatic hydrocarbons (52.9%), and decreased in orders of ketones (31.4%), alcohols (5.9%), n-hexane (5.9%) and esters (3.9%). The rate by regulatory category, the second category component was detected in 93.9% of total. 3. There was significant correlation (r=0.929, p<0.01)between detection rates of solvents in thinner and in air. 4. Among the total of 44 painting workplace, the rate of them of which level of mixed solvents in air was exceeded was highest in case of aromatic hydrocarbons (29.5%), and decreased in orders of ketones (6.8%), alcohol (2.3%), n-hexane (2.3%), and was highest in guitar painting (71.4%) workplace in case of aromatic hydrocarbons by component category.
Thin-film composite reverse osmosis membranes of aromatic polyamides were prepared by the interfacial polymerization. Aromatic polyamides as active skin layer were made from the interfacial polymerization of MPD(m-phenylene diamine) in the aqueous and TMC(trimesoyl chloride) in HCFC(1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane) organic solvent. The performances of the various reverse osmosis composite membranes prepared by changing processing variables were examined. The performance of membrane manufactured by batch system was varied with organic solvent, monomer concentration, dipping time, heat treatment temperature, acid acceptor, ethanol post treatment, and acid post treatment. Ethanol post treatment was the most dominant factors in increasing permeate amount, while the monomer concentration and dipping time were the main factors in increasing selectivity. The spiral-wound module was produced with the membrane prepared at optimum condition of the continuous process. Comparing the performance of this membrane module made here with that of commercial membrane module, the permeate flux was increased by 33% while the rejection was decreased by 5%.
This study analyzed the effect of organic solvent extractives on the classification of wood species via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). In our previous research, five species of Korean softwood were classified into three groups (i.e., Cryptomeria japonica (cedar)/Chamaecyparis obtuse (cypress), Pinus densiflora (red pine)/Pinus koraiensis (Korean pine), and Larix kaempferi (Larch)) using an NIR-based principal component analysis method. Similar tendencies of extractive distribution were observed among the three groups in that study. Therefore, in this study, we qualitatively analyzed extractives extracted by an organic solvent and analyzed the NIR spectra in terms of the extractives' chemical structure and band assignment to determine their effect in more detail. Cedar/cypress showed a similar NIR spectra patterns by removing the extractives at 1695, 1724, and 2291 nm. D-pinitol, which was detected in cedar, contributed to that wavelength. Red pine/Korean pine showed spectra changes at 1616, 1695, 1681, 1705, 1724, 1731, 1765, 1780, and 2300 nm. Diterpenoids and fatty acid, which have a carboxylic group and an aliphatic double bond, contributed to that wavelength. Larch showed a catechin peak in gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy analysis, but it exhibited very small NIR spectra changes. The aromatic bond in larch seemed to have low sensitivity because of the 1st overtone of the O-H bond of the sawdust cellulose. The three groups sorted via NIR spectroscopy in the previous research showed quite different compositions of extractives, in accordance with the NIR band assignment. Thus, organic solvent extractives are expected to affect the classification of wood species using NIR spectroscopy.
