  • The purpose of this study is to investigate trends in research studies on scientific argument and writing in Korea. 118 research studies published from 2004 to 2013 have been collected and analyzed. Many of the research studies focused on developing teaching strategies, analyzing contents of scientific argument and writing, and effects on student learning. More than half of the studies were conducted with elementary and middle school students while studies with pre-service, in-service teachers or high school students were relatively rare. Most research studies were conducted within regular school hour context and participants were given relevant information/education prior to argument and writing activities. Many research have analyzed student growth in scientific attitudes and we would suggest that further studies should investigate student growth in scientific concepts, scientific inquiry, and critical thinking. The structure and process of argument or the content and form of writing have been analyzed. The quality of argument and scientific concepts embedded in argument and writing should be investigated more in future researches.

  • The purpose of this paper is to build a semantic networks of the 'cooking class' verb (based on 'CoreNet' of KAIST). This proceedings needs to adjust the concept classification. Then sub-categories of [Cooking] and [Foodstuff] hierarchy of CoreNet was adjusted for the construction of verb semantic networks. For the building a semantic networks, each meaning of 'Cooking verbs' of Korean has to be analyzed. This paper focused on the Korean 'heating' verbs and 'non-heating'verbs. Case frame structure and argument information were inserted for the describing verb information. This paper use a Propege 3.3 as a tool for building "cooking verb" semantic networks. Each verb and noun was inserted into it's class, and connected by property relation marker 'HasThemeAs', 'IsMaterialOf'.

  • Purpose: This study reexamines the test on the pricing of accruals quality. Theory suggests that information risk is a priced risk factor. Using accruals quality as the proxy for information risk, researchers have tested the pricing of information risk. The results are inconsistent potentially because of the information shock in the realized returns that are used as the proxy for expected returns. Based on this argument, this study revisits this issue excluding information-shock-free measure of expected returns. Research design, data and methodology: This study estimates expected returns using the vector autoregression model. This method extracts information shocks more thoroughly than the methods in prior studies; therefore, the concern regarding information shock is minimized. As risk premiums are larger in recession periods than in expansion periods, recession and expansion subsamples were used to confirm the robustness of the main findings. For the pricing test, this study uses two-stage cross-sectional regression. Results: Empirical results find evidence that accruals quality is a priced risk factor. Furthermore, this study finds that the pricing of accruals quality is observed only in recession periods. Conclusions: This study supports the argument that accruals quality, as well as the pricing of information risk, is a priced risk factor.

  • Lots of valuable textual information is used to extract relations between named entities from literature. Composite kernel approach is proposed in this paper. The composite kernel approach calculates similarities based on the following information:(1) Phrase structure in convolution parse tree kernel that has shown encouraging results. (2) Predicate-argument structure patterns. In other words, the approach deals with syntactic structure as well as semantic structure using a reciprocal method. The proposed approach was evaluated using various types of test collections and it showed the better performance compared with those of previous approach using only information from syntactic structures. In addition, it showed the better performance than those of the state of the art approach.

  • In these days, the public library role for the lifelong education is getting enlarger. Thus the study suggested the ground of argument for the necessity that the public library should be in charge of the lifelong education through the relationship between the public library and the lifelong education. Based on this argument, the tendency or trend of the lifelong education, which has been performed overseas and domestically, was researched in the aspects of content, object, connection, basic facility and etc. As the result, the basic data needed to establish the lifelong education system in the library was suggested.

  • There have been two opposing views on the structure of the so-called head internal relative construction(HIRC) in Korean/Japanese, i.e., a view that analyzes the HIRC categorially as a nominal projection and functionally as an argument(Kuroda 1992, Watanabe 1992, Hoshi 1996, Jhang 1991/1994, among others) vs. a view that analyzes the HIRC categorially as an adjunct clause and functionally as a non-argument(Murasugi 1994). This paper on the one hand points out several phenomena indicating that Murasugi's analysis is more viable, while on the other hand proposing a more complex structure than Murasugi's to account for other facts as well. The no/kes clause in the HIRC will be analyzed as the complement of a null perception verb whose projection constitutes part of an adjunct clause.

  • Korean adjectives in general cannot combine with measure phrases (MP), but MPs are compatible with adjectives when they appear with the inchoative morpheme -(e)ci. In this case, MPs can only denote the difference between two states along the dimension denoted by the root adjective. To account for this, this paper proposes that i) -(e)ci is a spell-out of V in the directed motion construction which takes an abstract path argument, like become, and ii) this path argument contains a comparative morpheme. By assuming this we can explain why MPs appear with -(e)ci, as well as other interesting phenomena such as variable telicity in deadjectival verbs with -(e)ci.

  • The early studies indicated that the firm with monopoly power is likely to engage in X-inefficiency such as a managerial slack. The reflection of the X-inefficiency theory has led to the issue that the public sector may be more inefficient than the private sector. In Korea like other many countries the electricity gas water service which can be considered as natural monopoly have been provided mostly by the public sector. In order to provide the empirical evidence to the argument that the public sector may be more inefficient than the private sector this paper estimated the four types of Solow residual which is called the total factor productivity in the electricity gas water service industry with the associated empirical model and compared its productivity with one in the manufacturing industry. The empirical results do not support the argument that the public sector may be more inefficient or less productive than the private sector.
