In this study, we calculated arc discharges and flow characteristics driven by arcs in a thermal puffer chamber, which is one of most outstanding high-voltage interrupters, for understanding the complex physics and the probability of thermal breakdown. The four main parts of arc model for this virtual-reality are radiation, PTFE ablation, Cu evaporation, and turbulence. Among these important parts the turbulence model can be critical to the reliability of computation results during the whole arcing history because the plasma flow is affected by high heat energy and mass momentum. Two turbulence models, the Prandtl's mixing length model and the standard $k-\varepsilon$ model, are applied for these calculations and are compared with pressure-rise inside chamber and arc voltage between the contacts as well as flow characteristics near current zero.
Self-blast circuit breakers utilize the energy dissipated by the arc itself to create the required conditions for arc quenching during the current zero. During the arcing period, high pressure, temperature and radiation of the arc could burn in pure SF6 gas and PTFE nozzle. Ablated nozzle shape and $SF_6$-PTFE mixture vapor affect the performance of an self-blast circuit breaker. After a number of tests, nozzle in circuit breaker is disassembled, a section of ablated nozzle is investigated precisely. Using computational fluid dynamics, the conservation equation for the gas and temperature, velocity and electric fields within breaker is solved. Before applying a section model, developed program is verified with experimental data. Performance of ablated nozzle shape is compared with original model through analysis program.
This paper describes the use of the PHOENICS CFD package for the simulation of the high-current period of the arcing process in a hybrid rotating arc/auto expansion by interrupter. The operating principle of this device depends on rapid arc rotation due to the magnetic field created by the fault current through a coil which is mounted on contacts and also relies on the principle of thermal expansion created by arc energy in extinguishing chamber and finally causes pressure rise in expansion volume. This paper is divided into three main sections. The first gives a brief overview of the interrupter. The second section gives a full description of the methods used in the calculation. The final section presents some sample results for the hybrid interrupter.

Recently energy consumption has been increasing because of advances in the industry, and electrical fires have accounted for 31.9% of all fire accidents. An electrical fire is caused by a short circuit, power surge, or poor contact. Safety devices for short circuits or power surges are currently mandatory and can actually detect problems, but arcing caused by contact failure is difficult to detect in advance. This study used an IR sensor to detect the heat concentration caused by the arc. The data from the low-resolution sensor was amplified as much as four times by interpolation to find the exact location of the heat source and were then investigated.
Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same route, the close proximity of power lines and buried metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. The lightning strokes collected by an electric substation or power line tower might cause arcing through the soil to an adjacent gas pipeline. This paper gives the review of the breakdown mechanism and the standards of separation distance between lower and pipelines.

This paper presents the electrical properties of PTFE nozzle for a electrical apparatus. In the arcing environment in a electrical apparatus, radiation is considered to be the major energy transport mechanism from the arc to the wall. The fraction of the radiation power is emitted out of the arc and reaches the nozzle wall, causing ablation at the surface and in the depth of the wall. The energy concentration in the material leads to the depolymerization and eventually leads to the generation of decomposed gas as well as some isolated carbon particles. Adding some fillers into PTFE is expected to be efficient for improving the endurability against radiation. In this experiment, three kinds of fillers that have endurance in the high temperature environment were added into PTFE. Light reflectance of fillers was investigated. Dielectric constan and dissipation factor of PTFE composites were investigated. Dielectric constant and dissipation factor of the PTFE composites increased with increasing contents of the fillers.
Flashover of power transmission line insulators due to contamination is a major threat to the reliable operation of power system. This paper deals with the analysis of leakage current characteristics of polymeric insulator using S-Transform technique in order to develop a better diagnostic tool to identify the surface condition of outdoor polymeric insulators. In this work, experiments were carried out on 11 kV silicone rubber insulator under AC voltage at different pollution levels. Moving average technique was adopted to find the trend followed by LC peak at different relative humidity conditions. S-Transform was used to find the relationship between energy and frequency content of the leakage current signal with respect to increase in pollution level over a period of time. From the S-Transform time-frequency contour analysis, point of transition to severe arcing due to increase in pollution and its thershold limit were evaluated. Reported results show that the surface condition of insulators could be easily identified from the S-Transform time-frequency analysis of leakage current signals.

This work deals with the electrical conductivity of dielectric on output parameters such as metal removal rate and surface roughness value of a carbon steel(SM25C) and sintered carbides cut by wire-electrical discharge machining(W-EDM). Dielectric has several functions like insulation, ionization, cooling, the removal of waste metal particles. The presence of minute particles(gap debris) in spark gap contaminates and lowers the breakdown strength of dielectric. And it is considered that too much debris in spark gap is generally believed to be the cause of arcing. Experimental results show that increases of cobalt amount in carbides affects the metal removal rate and worsens the surface quality as a greater quantity of solidified metal deposits on the eroded surface. Lower electrical conductivity of the dielectric results in a lower metal removal rate because the gap between wire electrode and workpiece reduced. Especially, the surface characteristics of rough-cut workpiece and wire electrode were analyzed too. Debris were analyzed also through scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and surface roughness tester. Micro cracks and some of electrode material are found on the workpiece surface by energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS).

It is necessary to install the arc generation facility in order to obtain the important technology for the design of breakers and switches, and for the improvement of their performance and reliability. With this facility, it is possible, to study the characteristics of Arc in air/gas/vacuum insulation environment. The facility briefly consists of capacitor bank which can charge enormous energy, an air-core reactor, experimental arc-chamber, and several measurement equipments. This facility can simulates the arc phenomena in breakers and switches by means of generating high currents. In order to study the arc phenomena in SF6 gas and vacuum and to test the quenching performance of the extinguishing chambers which are developing. we made experimental $SF_6$gas/vacuum chambers and measured several parameter's of chambers. And besides we visualized arc ignition and arc movement by means of high speed camera.
