To select the criteria, literature review was made in the quantitative case of conservation biology, foreign country's EIA and domestic ecology. Among them, a few factors was extracted. To applicate the criteria to domestic forest ecosystem, expert opinion survey was executed to the ecologist. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Classification of sites was made of land use system which is related to forest ecosystem or forest conservation. Sites are divided into 3 categories which are nature preservation area, seminature preservation area and urbanized area. Evaluation criteria is consisted of rarity and naturalness. 2. Each area had different criteria composition according to the site characteristics. Criteria of nature preservation area is rarity in the broad sense (distribution pattern of vegetation), vegetation size, successional stage and depth of organic matters. Those of seminature preservation area are rarity in the broad sense (distribution area of vegetation), vegetation size, successional stage, diameter at breath height and depth of organic matters. And those of urbanized area are vegetation distribution in area, successional stage, age of forest and diameter of breath height. The basic data of criterion was gathered by field survey. 3. Evaluation index and total naturalness index was obtained by adding the each criterion. It is made up of two categories-rarity and naturalness. TNi is divided into 3 grades. Grade I is more than 70% for TNi, grade IT is 50~70%, and grade III is below 50%. According to the each grade, permitted action and facilities were suggested.. This research just focuses on the evaluation of vegetation quality and the assessment results do not directly judge conservation or development. To make better evaluation criteria, various fields of forest ecosystem-geological or physical nature environment and fauna ecosystem etc. -will be added wholly to this research.
In the Western and Oriental architecture, corridor and stairs have not been important from the whole architectural composition. The purpose of this study is to analyze their elements from theoretical viewpoint of modern architecture. The subject of analysis are Yangjindang and Daesanru of the Mid-Chosun Dynasty in Sangju. The conclusions are the followings : First, the moving line in the Western and Oriental architecture has the linear axis, and in general moving axis is straighten in Hanok architecture. But unlike common traditional architecture, the two buildings are right-angled in the moving axies. Second, Toenmaru in Yangjindang is the element of visual experience in the whole architectural space as promenade architecture called by Le Corbusier. On the other hand, Toenmaru in Daesanru plays a role the space of thinking in extending a visual field to the nature than its pure function. Third, the stairs of Yangjindang is diagonal shape with a role of entrance, but that of Daesanru was concealed in the wall as interior step. Yangjindang has two different stairs. One is broad and shallow stairs with ceremonial or public expression, and the other is narrow and steep stairs with unstable or private expression. This paper intends to show the latent architectural possibility of our traditional architecture.

This design proposal was presented to a design competition for renovation of the Pagoda Park, located in Chongro-2ga, Chongro-gu, Seoul, where the first ˝Manse˝ (hurrah) Movement fighting against Japanese colonization, broke out on March 1st, 1919. The park has been considered to be the first modern park in Korea also. The objectives for the design were to make a sacred place to commemorate the 3.1 ˝Manse˝ Movement, to preserve and symbolically memorialize historic remains of the old ˝Wongaksa˝ Temple, an to provide natural and rest areas for citizen. For the space composition, three axes symbolic of, ´freedom and independence´, ´mercy´, and ´nature´, were created. For the freedom and independence axis, exiting facilities, such as statures and monuments related to the 3.1 Movement, were relocated centering around the octagonal pavilion, which was the starting point for the movement, to give order of the site. For the ercy axis, symbols of traditional temple structures, such as, ´Iljugate´-´Pian bridge´-´Chongwang gate´-´Haetal gate´-Pagoda-Buddhist sanctum, were created to symbolize the temple remains and placeness. For the nature axis, tree groves, walking trails, and rest areas for citizen were provided around the site. As a whole the design provided structural orders from secular spaces outside to sacred spaces inside.

This study was executed to investigate the vegetation structure and to propose the vegetation management proposals of the Sansung Nature Park at Cheonju City and the results were as fellows. 1. A damage of vegetation and soil surface around the Namgosa was taken place up to 100m by picnic 2. Pinus rigida forest covered 36.1% of the total area(152.6ha) and total afforested vegetation covered 43.5%, respectively. P. denstflora comm. covered 28.4% arid Carpinus laxiflora Comm. as a climax vegetation in temerate zone covered 0.3%, respectively. 3. 6, 7 and 8 of the degree of human disturbance of vegetation covered 45.3%, 26.6% and 21.4%, respectively and resulted in low quality of naturalness. 4. Physical and chemical properties of soil were pour at high elevation and were poor severely in and around the Namgosa due to human disturbance. 5. Plant community were under rapid succession and had unvalanced structure and heterogeneous composition of species. Rapid vegetational succession from Pinus densiflora and Pf. rigida to Carpinus laxifora, Quercus spp. and Robinina pseudo-acacia were taken place.6. The speeies of Raunkiaer's frequency class I as of high frequency class were Pinus dunsiflora, Carpinus alxiflora, Quercus mmongolica, Sorbus alnifolia, Prunrs sargintii, Rhododendron yedoense, Stephanandra incisa and Lespedeza maxinowiczii. 7. Vegetational management proposals were made for three vegetation zones ; Historic landscape restoration and preservation zone, Afforested vegetation zone, Native vegetation conservation zone and recommanded native species for landcape planting.

This landscape design proposal was presented to a design competition for the Culture.Welfare.Administration Complex of Yongin-City which was held by Yongin-City in December, 2001. The site is located at 68-19 Yukbuck-dong, Yongin-City, Kyunggi-do and has an area of 236,449$m^2$. The judging criteria for landscape design set by the Yongin-City could be articulated as follows: an environment friendly design respecting the surrounding environment, a locale as a community center of Yongin-City, a resting place for the welfare of employees and visitors, and finally a place with diverse landscape elements reflecting the individual identity of each facility. This proposal chose the main design concept of this project as‘Nature meets City'. A grove of pine trees fragments the multi building complex, so that‘nature'was brought into the‘city'. A double ground system was introduced to respect the existing topography and to enhance the efficency of the land. This design proposal consists of four segments. Each segment has its own design theme. Outdoor space of this multi-purpose complex was designed with themes of nature, culture, welfare and administration. Space composition with grid and natural looking curvilinear lines was a design motive for this complex. The nature oriented planting design was introduced to respect the existing groves of Mt. Suksung. Specific species were chosen to follow its own spatial character in each space. An environmental sculpture called‘Dream Soaring'was placed in the middle of‘Citizen Plaza'. Its light and feather-looking shape symbolizes the vision of Youngin-City. At night people can watch the diverse color changes on its mirror-like surface.

In November of 1994, The Seoul Metropolitan Government celebrates its sixth centennial anniversary of becoming the capital city of Korea. In celebration of this anniversary, the Government decided to construct a plaza and sought design proposals in March of 1994. The authors collaborated on a design for the Time Capsule Plaza Competition and won fourth place among twenty-six entries. In the authors' design, the traditional oriental concept of time resonates within the site through the shape of a clock, a unique planting style, and an "Ancestral Tomb" which has a time capsule inside. The plaza is meant to be a symbol of the passage of time, the cycles of nature, and the repetitive actions of man. As for the spatial composition of the plaza, in accordance with the traditional Korean way of spatial arrangement, the plaza is divided into three parts: entry, primary, and secondary spaces. In reality, the plaza is created with the primary goal of providing modern outdoor space for people to rest and gather through the creation of pleasant environments and the introduction of traditional Korean garden elements.

The purpose of this study is to look for an environmental design method based on open narrative structure, and to promote various experiences and interpretations of space through user's engagements. That is to say, the designer does not lead specific events through separate Boning but using the continuous open composition users are provided with margins for their imaginations. Spatial formulation through open narrative structure gives us various thoughts and it plays an important role in making a sequential space. Like an abstract painting, it is a complex story making or arranging a montage of images containing stories that elicit the reader's engagement through diverse interpretations. Like this, open composition exists in an ambiguous state and it is possible to interpret unfinished‘evolving work’within it. Utilizing open narrative structure, this study attempts to apply the idea of sequencing and open composition in the case of designing Arirang Culture Park. Open composition should induce various engagements by users and could be a medium which organically connects nature, culture and people. The spatial strategies of‘ambiguity’ and‘transparency’are like a bundle of complex and heterogeneous factors. Finally, the study focuses on the ‘integration’of the main ideas that compose multilayered space. ‘Voidness’and‘thickening’are also used for spatial strategies in open narrative structure. As alternative plans for undecided programs of the space, the voidness can be a strategic design program with flexibility about changes of futures. Also, thickening can be a strategic design program for functional reinforcement of the space, for the dramatic effects and for the generation of incidental events. Although both voidness and thickening seem paradoxical, we can see they are similar in the way that both focus on various spatial uses and by how they do not function as one-to-one correspondence, but as multiple correspondences. Therefore, open narrative structure is possible to apply in designing space and it can be an alternative design strategy for inducing multiple interpretations of space.
Construction space of Japan suggests the factor of speculation to human and reveals tradition. The speculation can be embodied in the aspect of space and human's mental aspect is expressed as a main factor of tradition space of Japan. The purpose of this study is to research expression characteristic of speculation space, shown in the architecture of modem architect, Tadao Ando, who succeeds the concept. His works surveyed through research contain the emotion of nature and human, which are traditional factors of Japan. Moreover, it is reinterpreted by modem space, delivers its function of space and physical factor to user and grants value to activity and behavior of user residing in the space. Users recognize movement, create new meaning of space and accept physical barrier in the space. In conclusion, it can be said that the space of speculation is not a simple visual thing but a frame of visual structure, which is invented for embodiment. The factors show the Japanese architecture, real and contemplating one, which is positive in real life and allows experience. Through the conditions above, the researcher can find the meaning from the aspect that modem architecture of Japan is planned on the basis of concept of speculation.

Purpose: The courtyard in the ward can light and ventilate in the central space and corridor of the ward. It is possible to improve the disadvantages of the existing double-corridor ward. Also, there is the advantage in that patients are able to contact with nature indoors and cause positive activities. So, the purpose of this study is quantitatively analyze the floor area and the average distance of nurse working of the courtyard in ward. Methods: The subjects are converted through the same criteria setting. And it investigate and analyze the influence of the courtyard in the ward through the analysis of the spatial composition. Result: The factors that affected the floor area increase are the planning courtyard, the corridor type and the dispersion of the medical rooms. The average distance of nurse working is more influenced by the nursing management system of the hospital than by the courtyard. So, It can improve according to the position and number of nurse station. Implications: It can be used as a primary data for courtyard plan in the ward for positive patient environment plan considering the floor area, average distance of nurse working.

The criterion of 'void space' in this paper is based on the sense of unusual experiences to afford the improvement of the value of cultural life with the sense of Healing. The more chances to spiritual converse with nature and oneself, the higher the value of healing experiences that one has will grow. This analysis has been done on the premises that this is derived from the inner conversation with 'nature' and 'oneself', as well as among 'others'. In other words, while the 'community void' affords programmatic aspect in relations between humans, the 'ecological void', systemic aspect in relations between human and nature, the 'meditation void', the aspect of image in relations between human and human's inside. Jong-soung Kimm and Hyo-sang Seung are Korean architects who have consistently expressed contrastive essential characteristics of the 'void space' in their contemporary works. While the void space of contemporary Korean architectures have shown various external forms, there has been a trace deeply rooted from the absolute and neutral concepts of the masters of Modern architects and 'Madang'of Korean traditional space. The integrated composition in the works of Jong-soung Kimm suggested integrated characters and healing affordances of 'Madang', but it hardly showed the poetic simplicity that could be seen from the image of traditional 'Madang'. On the other hand, the works of Hyo-sang Seung represented the simple and silent image of 'Madang', but showed fragmented characteristics that didn't sufficiently afford the integrated healing functions of 'Madang'.
