  • A Beam String Structure (BSS) is a type of hybrid structures, which is composed of upper structural members, lower strings, and struts. Due to the advantages that the pre-tensioned strings elicit pre-caber of the upper structural members, the deflection can be greatly reduced without increasing the structural member size. In this study, a two-way beam string structure is proposed to endure bi-directional loading. The two-way beam string structure consists of two cable parts, namely, sagging and arch-shaped cables. A parametric study is presented aimed at proposing design guide lines of the two-way beam string structures. Numerical finite element analyses through the ABAQUS package were implemented to obtain their behaviors.

  • 'Transparency', which has been an important topic of architectural discourse in the recent past, is playing an even greater role in architectural expression nowadays. The purpose of this study is to define the prevailing conceptions about transparency and to discover the various modes of this design effect in architectural space. By using partial or complete of transparency in a structure, designers are able to express themselves more profoundly. The perception between exterior and interior, transformation of day into night and conditions arising from spatial overlapping create an atmosphere which deepens the quickly of architectural design. Transparency can present as void what in reality is solid. Following the period of de-construction, transparency has asserts itself in late part of the century and transparency can be considered synonymous with modernistic and refers to structure that are optically luminant or pleasant in its simplicity. Along with advancement of climate control, construction and design technologies and new material with versatility should combine to even further the diversity of transparency in architectural expression.

  • This study investigated the complex meanings of the concept of place and their periodical changes in the Korean architectural discourse. For that, the study surveyed almost every articles in majour 3 Korean architectural magazines during around 1990s, when the Korean architects and theorists concerned the 'place' as an alternative of the modernists' 'space'. 60 selected articles were organized in a table in a chronological order together with their keywords and category codes. The 8 categories reflecting 8 issues of 'place' were suggested in the study after the analysis of selected articles' contents. The categories were structured by two axes which were 4-grade scale axis influences by C. Norberg-Schultz' approach, and 'architecture-human' axis following the 'structure-action' division by A. Giddens. After the analysis of the diachronic and synchronic tables, the study tried to establish a structure model of the concept of place in Korean architectural context, which consisted of architectural terms such as environment, social system, context, identity, landscape, community, Materiality, and residence. This final result could be useful for both architects and theorists who might try to apply the idea of 'place' without erstwhile confusion on their design or research by examining the detailed contents of the concept.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the architectural space of modern and contemporary architecture which has been changed by the aesthetic cognition on space. The intention of considering architectural space aesthetically is to convert the viewpoint of seeing space as simple physical structure into different viewpoint of regarding 'space' as 'cultural place' However this does not means to apply aesthetic theory to architectural space. The aesthetic cognition on space is one of the main subjects of the expression of art from ancient to today however the appearance of space concept as architectural aesthetics accelerated by G. Semper theory after the latter half of 19th century. On the standpoint of perpetuity in architecture the aesthetics of scientific rationalism in modernism based on the reasonable thinking regards the variety of inherent characteristic in architectural space as 'Transferential Space'. On the other hand, in regarding to architectural trend, the nature in architectural space has been considered as 'Existential Space' starting from the conscious construction of environments to help human existence in the existentialism. The Conclusion logic of follows as belows; first, the concept of space structure in architecture has been exchanged from Enclosed Space to Topological Space. Second, the concept of architectural space has been changed and developed to the Deterministic, Profound, Dissipative, and Recognizable Space according to the change of expression in architecture.

  • This study tries to analyze the influence of IIT's educational system on the Jong Soung Kimm's Architecture. Architect Kimm was the first student in Korea who gained admission to the IIT and was directly learned from Mies van der Rohe. At IIT, he completed a university course from 1956 to 1961, and finished a degree of master under the direction of Professor Myron Goldsmith in 1964. After the graduation, he entered Mies's office and became the professeur of IIT from 1966 to 1978. In consideration with these facts, it is no exaggeration to say that Kimm's architecture was formed by the IIT's educational system and Mies's architectural principles. According to the synopsis of the 5-year curriculum 1944-45, the object of architectural work in IIT is the clarification of : 1)the structure as an architectural factor, its possibilities and limitations 2) space as an architectural problem 3) proportion as a means of architectural expression 4) the expression value of materials 5) the application of these principles by means of free creative work. Architect Kimm's works designed in Korea reflect well these objectives. But Kimm also knew well the problems of IIT's educational system. After the retirement of Mies, IIT's educational system had the tendency to overstress the technology of structure and simplify the complexity of Miesian architectural principles. In opposition to this tendency, architect Kimm continued to keep the spacial and formal subtlety which possess the Mies' original architecture. This shows very well the future direction of Kimm's architectural activities.

  • The Industrial Revolution brought a variety of new forms of structure, and as a group they are usually called 'industrial architecture'. Steam engines contributed greatly to architecture with a unique structure called 'water tower' to provide water for steam engines, especially the adoption of it. This study is to examine the changes of the building materials and architectural features of the water towers of railway stations built in the early twentieth century in South Korea. This study also attempts to describe the modern features of the industrial architecture, which did not get a chance to be noticed. Through this examination on water tower, which is a part of industrial architecture with sheer integration of function and pure geometric form, we would like to find the meaning of modern architecture in Korea. As we can see in the Korean oldest railway station water tower constructed in masonry at Yeonsan Station in 1911, early water towers were divided into the masonry machine room and the steel water tank. However, the masonry structure was soon turned into concrete structure with its formal features maintained as it was. The steel water tank was also replaced with concrete structure. As a result, while its basic structure remained, concrete structure had substituted for the every components of water tower. Concrete-built water towers were the high-tech architecture of that time and the most perfect structures built in concrete. Nevertheless, the perfection of the water tower form and the technology it attained were not transferred to other modern and contemporary architecture in South Korea. Since the subject to railway station water towers was the Japanese government, and steam engines were replaced with diesels in the midst of a complicated domestic situation after the independence, the need for water towers in railway stations disappeared and therefore, it became ignored and was difficult to look over the architectural features and values of early railway station water towers.

  • School gymnasium is a multi-purpose large space building for various events and physical education activities, and is a facility that requires an approach to the desirable structural design, besides mechanical problems of structure against loads. For the integrated structure design concerning the architectural features, the major considerations of gymnasium planning that are the internal and external shape of the gymnasium, the space scale with structure members, the structural efficiency by members weight reduction and openness of the gymnasium space will have to take into account in the structural planning. From this point of view, the several cases of the school gymnasium were investigated and the parametric analyses were performed to the models using the various structural system. The parameters were the composition elements of structure system that are profile of structure, rigidity of member, connection and anchorage and stability. At the result, It was presented that the profile of structure member was the most influential factor to structural efficiency and the effect of the form and space of gymnasium. Also the design informations of structure design having the various feature of form and space were presented for the initial gymnasium planning.

  • Starting from the quadratic optimal control algorithm, this study obtains the relation of the performance index for constrained systems and Gauss's principle. And minimizing a function of the variation in kinetic energy at constrained and unconstrained states with respect to the velocity variation, the dynamic equation is derived and it is shown that the result compares with the generalized inverse method proposed by Udwadia and Kalaba. It is investigated that the responses of a 10-story building are constrained by the installation of a two-bar structure as an application to utilize the derived equations. The structural responses are affected by various factors like the length of each bar, damping, stiffness of the bar structure, and the junction positions of two structures. Under an assumption that the bars have the same mass density, this study determines the junction positions to minimize the total dynamic responses of the structure.

  • There remain several archiectural drawings which was made in Chosun dynasty, which are quite different from current drawings. The site plan which is composed of slanted elevations doesn't exhist in Western drawing method. This elevation development method is common in Korea, China, and Japan. These three nations also have a common point which the wooden structure are popular. So elevation development method is reasonable to represent the wooden structure. Because a drawing mehod reflects cultural character and thought, it is important to read the architectural perception at that time. In this viewpoint, I studied the characters of the drawing method in Chosun dynasty according to the peoriodical articulation of century, and how the drawing method reflects the thought at that time. And I suggested a new posibility of effective and reasonable drawing method for the wooden structure.
