A Study on Estimating Recycling Potential of Demolition Waste Generated in End-of-Life of Buildings by Structural Type Considering Economic Efficiency (경제적 효율성 측면에서 건축물 구조를 고려한 해체폐기물의 재활용가능성에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigates the recycling potential of demolition waste (DW) according to building structure, while considering economic aspects. For that, this study surveyed 1,034 residential buildings to collect reliable information on demolition waste generation rates (DWGRs). This study suggested a method for operational cost calculation for each stage and carried out an inventory analysis. The economic value of recycled DW materials was also calculated. And then, the recycling potential(RP) was calculated by building structures and waste types. RP by building structure was low (27-40%), and RP was found in the order of masonry-block, wooden, RC and concrete-brick. By type of DWs, the RP of aggregates was considerably lower than 7%, and DWs such as wood, plastics, and metals showed more than 100% RP. Considering the results of this study, In order to improve the RP of buildings and DWs, the diversification of products that recycled waste like aggregates (i.e., mortar, concrete, bricks, blocks, tiles) and the development of high value-added products are considered to be the most urgent problems. Based on the above RP results, this study proposed a more advanced method for life cycle assessment of buildings and demolition waste.

A Study on Evaluation of Floor Response Spectrum for Seismic Design of Non-Structural Components (비구조요소의 내진 설계를 위한 기존 층응답스펙트럼의 평가)

  • The seismic damage of non-structural components, such as communication facilities, causes direct economic losses as well as indirect losses which result from social chaos occurring with downtime of communication and financial management network systems. The current Korean seismic code, KBC2009, prescribes the design criteria and requirements of non-structural components based on their elastic response. However, it is difficult for KBC to reflect the dynamic characteristics of structures where non-structural components exist. In this study, both linear and nonlinear time history analyses of structures with various analysis parameters were carried out and floor acceleration spectra obtained from analyses were compared with both ground acceleration spectra used for input records of the analyses and the design floor acceleration spectrum proposed by National Radio Research Agency. Also, this study investigates to find out the influence of structural dynamic characteristics on the floor acceleration spectra. The analysis results show that the acceleration amplification is observed due to the resonance phenomenon and such amplification increases with the increase of building heights and with the decrease of structure's energy dissipation capacities.

Proposal of New Correction Factors for New and Renewable Energy Sources in Public Building (공공건축물에 적용되는 신·재생에너지원의 새로운 보정계수 제안)

  • The government introduced a mandatory installation system of new & renewable energy for public building to meet the target of greenhouse gas reduction and also suggest a correction factor for new renewable energy to expand the installation of various new & renewable energy systems. The introduction of correction factors, however, was followed by the reduction of installation size of new & renewable energy sources. Assuming that it was caused by a correction factor for each new renewable energy source calculated by the initial costs, this study proposed a new correction factor approach based on payback periods to reflect the technology element in the calculation process of correction factors additionally. The application results of new correction factors show that it was possible to do complex calculations including the economic and technological aspects to select a new & renewable energy system and that the installation size was also enlarged.

  • The purpose of this study is create a comparative analysis of the characteristics of various materials which were used on the outer wall of F.L.Wright's works. The research results will be summarized as follows: 1) Wright thought that the outer wall was not just a physical object which divides the space of a house but it includes the image of the total exterior form, as well as, the economical factors of the age. 2) He tried to sublimate architectural image of his own style with the change of time because he recognized difficulties and limitations of traditional materials and economic feasibility. 3) He used nature-friendly material like wood and brick which were used in various methods of his natural architectural concept. 4) Some of Wright's early works were acculturated by classical architectural components such as the column to emphasize verticality of architectural form. The columns play a division role in the face of the outer wall creating a dynamic image and this also controls the amount of light that enters inside the house.

A Study on the Characteristic of Raumplan based on the Architectural Thought of Adolf Loos (아돌프 로스의 건축사상에 기초한 라움플란의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Adolf Loos showed important directionality in the thought of modem culture and architecture. The thought about the architecture of Adolf Loos was gathered by "Raumplan". It is the solution of the plan in space. But the concept and method of the "Raumplan" had not been synthesized until near the end of Loos's life. Loos's first reference to the "Raumplan" appears in 1929. I think that "Raumplan" became the solution of the plan in space with a formation process of the thought about the architecture and culture of Adolf Loos. Therefore, the purpose of this paper derived a characteristic of "Raumplan" from the relations between the architectural thought of Adolf Loos and "Raumplan". The processes of the study are as follows. (1)Consideration about the growth background of Adolf Loos and the social situation of Vienna. (2)Analysis about architecture and the cultural critic of Adolf Loos. (3)Analysis of "Raumplan" based on architectural thought of Adolf Loos. As a result, I got the four characteristics of "Raumplan" as follows. (1) Separation and continuation of "Raum". (2) Fragment of "Raum". (3) Overlay and transmission by the axis of multiplex eyes. (4) Structural adjustment of the "Raum" by Hierarchy. Finally, I understood the architecture which Adolf Loos pursued in "Raumplan" had a high function and contained the clear meaning and contents which had practical use and economic value, and it were not a results of the simple logic.

A Study on the Causes of Failure of the 'Failed' Modern Housing Projects ('실패한' 근대 집합주거의 실패요인에 관한 연구)

  • This research is an effort to clarify the causes associated with the 'failure' of public housing projects built in the 20th century. Two of the most brutal symbol of failure were selected: the Pruitt-Igoe built in St. Louis, U.S.A. and the Bijlmermeer in the south of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Many critics have attributed the problems of the selected housing projects to architectural failure, and proposed a series of new approaches to architectural design. The claim that many housing projects 'failed' because they were based on an agenda for social reform, derived from the ideas of the CIAM, presupposes that architects were in the position of authority over providing housing for the poor. This research tries to overturn the belief of architectural community which has placed the responsibility for the failure of public housing on designers. The sense of isolation and powerlessness felt by the residents, and the social problems attendant on those feelings, may be reinforced by design but is not caused by Modern Architecture. It should be stressed that the political-economic and social context is more significant than the architectural design for the failure of public housing projects such as the Pruitt-Igoe and the Bijlmermeer.

Automatic Arrangement Algorithm for Tower Cranes Used in High-rise Apartment Buildings

  • On most construction sites, the arrangement of tower cranes is decided by site engineers based on their own experience, which can cause cost overruns and delays in the lifting work. Although many researchers have conducted studies on tower crane arrangement using computer modeling and knowledge-based expert systems as well as mathematical models, no research has aimed to develop an algorithm to identify an optimum solution among several alternatives for installation areas of tower cranes satisfying the conditions of lifting work. The objective of this study is to develop an automatic arrangement algorithm for tower cranes used in high-rise apartment construction. First, as a new concept, a possible installation area of tower cranes was suggested. Second, after proposing several alternatives based on the installation points suggested in this study, an algorithm analyzing the economic feasibility of tower cranes was developed considering the rental, installation and removal costs. Third, a case study was conducted to prove the validity of the developed algorithm for selecting and installing an effective set of tower cranes at minimum cost.

The Adaptation of Architectural Facility for Buddhānusmrti in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries (19세기와 20세기 초 염불당(念佛堂)의 수용)

  • The harsh economic conditions of Buddhist temples in late Joseon dynasty, and the prevalence of the Buddhānusmrti(念佛) practice, which is a practice of reciting Amita Buddha(阿彌陀佛), led Buddhist temples to organize the Buddhānusmrti association(念佛契) in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For the practices and the activities of organization, an architectural facility was required; thereby, many temples had a Yeombul-dang(念佛堂). However, only a few of the Yeombul-dang have survived and are known today. This research investigates the ways temples tried to acquire Yeombul-dang buildings during the period and their architecture characteristics by reviewing historical records and documentary works of literature. In this research, Yeombul-dang is found to have various types of building names and building forms. Different hall names such as Amitābha Hall(佛殿), Yosa(寮舍) and Daebang(大房) were used as Yeonbul-dang. The commonalities and differences in terms of building forms, spatial elements composition and layouts were found depending on how they were acquired. The Yeombul-dang were most commonly built as multi-complex buildings consisting of worshiping rooms and residential areas. Most of Yeombul-dang were located in the central areas of the temple site. On this basis, this research suggests the possibility that many Yeombul-dang is still being used under different names and for different purposes.

  • "Special Act on the Rocal Collaborative Development", proposed by Seoul in late 2015, aims to promote win-win cooperation between local economic players and the development of local communities. However, since it is not possible to ensure its effectiveness by signing a local collaborative agreement, the rights and duties granted to the Parties to the Convention shall be more clearly defined. In addition, it is feared that the application of a uniform standard to businesses that wish to restrict the operation within the local collaborative development zone could prevent the operation restriction based on local characteristics. Accordingly, based on the FBR system in the U.S., it is possible to define the business as a "uniform store" and to determine the possibility of a uniform store to be sold through zoning plans in the region by the Local Collaborative Community Council.

A Conceptual Design and Feasibility Analyses of an Automated Pothole Patching Machine (도로면 포트홀 유지보수 자동화 장비의 개념디자인 및 경제적 타당성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The primary objective of this study is to develop a conceptual design of automated pothole patching machine that improves the conventional work in safety, quality, and productivity. For this, the following research works are conducted sequentially; 1)literature review, 2)selection of element technology for conceptual design, 3)deduction of work process and conceptual design, 4)life cycle cost analysis of the conceptual design. As a result, X-Y table telescopic manipulator, pothole patching end effector, realtime pothole recognizer, 3D pothole volume profiler, automated pothole patching machine controller are selected as core technologies. Furthermore, a conceptual design and working process of an automated pothole patching machine are developed based on the core technologies. According to the life cycle cost analysis result, the cost of the automated method was 38.3% less than that of the conventional method, and the economic efficiency was also superior(ROR 77.1%, Break-even Point 23.8month). It is expected that the application range and impact on the construction industry will be enormous due to the increasing trend of road maintenance market.
