Analytical solutions for bending of transversely or axially FG nonlocal beams

  • This paper presents the analytical solutions for the size-dependent static analysis of the functionally graded (FG) beams with various boundary conditions based on the nonlocal continuum model. The nonlocal behavior is described by the differential constitutive model of Eringen, which enables to this model to become effective in the analysis and design of nanostructures. The elastic modulus of beam is assumed to vary through the thickness or longitudinal directions according to the power law. The governing equations are derived by using the nonlocal continuum theory incorporated with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The explicit solutions are derived for the static behavior of the transversely or axially FG beams with various boundary conditions. The verification of the model is obtained by comparing the current results with previously published works and a good agreement is observed. Numerical results are presented to show the significance of the nonlocal effect, the material distribution profile, the boundary conditions, and the length of beams on the bending behavior of nonlocal FG beams.

  • The Main concern of this thesis is on the possibility to apply Hermeneutics to architectural history, with a view point that the past architecture can be seen as a text, this study analyse the relationship between the past building and interpreter, the epistenological tool for interpretation and historian. After reviewing the characteristics of architectural history with regard to text theory, this study can lead to the conclusion that the interpretation of past architecture can be defired as dynamic dialogue which depend upon the time.

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest new direction to the historical research society of Korean architecture by epistemological discussion. Korean architectural history at present, without question of history for what, for whom, and how, is regarded as 'history for the past' only 'to describe past' or 'to collect correct data' However, history is beyond that; history ought to suggest a direction of present and near future. Moreover, architecture is not pure but applied knowledge, that is, focused to 'how to build'. Therefore, past historical knowledge by research should influence to present design. In order to do that, history of mere data collection should change direction to the history of meaning by interpretation, and then, of finding design principle. The principle used in architectural community becomes theory in scientific research community, and finally is unified to 'theory of practice'. Creative history should be substituted for retrospective history reusing historical reservoir, at the specific situation of Korea; tradition has been discontinued drastically and Western method imported to the point of being culturally-colonized. Some expmples of altanative history are suggested at the end of this paper as conclusion.

  • The aim of this study is to understand and redefine the nature of architectural environment within the paradigm of natural science. The chaos theory non-equilibrium thermodynamics theory self-organization of modern physics offer new insights to explain not only natural phenomena but also to define creative and dynamic architectural environment. First natural laws in modern physics like the arrow of time but is related not only with certainty but also possibility so nature is understood as a constantly changing process of evolution. Second the new architectural environment is defined as a kind of fluid and irreducible organic biosytem that cannot be fully understood by modernist idea of architecture. It is conceived of as a fluid constantly changing self-oraganizing system that consists of different situations events movements and programs in uncertain and irreducible time frame. Third insights and implications of natural science offer new language and strategy for design and the two disciplines can be understood as interdependent and co-evolving

  • The Affordance, discussed in the theory of ecological perception of environmental psychology, is the concept of perception that deals with inter-relationship between environment and human. It is a theory seeking for gradual evolution, with the change of user experience behavior and the space, by getting feed-backs from the analysis of perception of characteristics of 3-dimensional space and the user as moving entity. Although there has been many attempts to define the Affordance and apply its concept to the architecture, now there's a need to identify the Affordance in the real architectural space, represent Affordance of space and the user inter-relationship in the architecture and apply its design specifically, Thus, the purpose of this study is to present the methodology of applying Affordance in architectural space design by identifying the Affordance of space concept of human experience behavior in the architectural space and analyze its recognition process.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual properties on the human movement behavior experimentally and empirically using spatial analysis technique based on ecological perception theory. For the survey of choosing behaviors of heading direction in built environments, the experiment was conducted in which the subjects were made to choose moving directions in some spaces using the virtual environment simulation tool, and then comparative analysis was conducted on the interrelation between the experiment results and various visual properties in existing spatial analysis techniques based on ecological perception theory. As a result, the occlusivity of the isovist theory was found to be the most significant index in the human choice of heading direction, and the longest radial also showed somewhat significant effect on it.

  • The theory of tectonic appeared in the midst of 19th century as German architects adopted new materials and structural technology, invented by creative engineers, into architectural design. This does not merely mean a technical problem but concern the redefinition of architecture in term of an aesthetic, cultural, and ontological identity. Furthermore it alluded to a desire on the part of architectural theorists to actualize artistic and spiritual goals out of new constructional necessities. Because of their complex discourse that assumed the possibility of communication between philosophical and technical aspects, between ideal and real concerns, tectonics becomes until now the most important issue in architecture. The concept of tectonic was intensively investigated by Gottfried Semper's and Karl B$\ddot{o}$tticher architectural writings. They contributed to clarify the principle aspects of tectonic within architectural, philosophical, and anthropological discourses of 19th century. Gottfried Semper stressed an understanding of how architecture took on physical form in earliest human culture. He placed great importance on the artistic expression of materials. But unlike Semper who argued the cladding of the structural frame by decorative wall system, Karl Botticher required maximum visibility of structural frame. Geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin-walled open-section composite beams

  • This paper presents a flexural-torsional analysis of thin-walled open-section composite beams. A general geometrically nonlinear model for thin-walled composite beams and general laminate stacking sequences is given by using systematic variational formulation based on the classical lamination theory. The nonlinear algebraic equations of present theory are linearized and solved by means of an incremental Newton-Raphson method. Based on the analytical model, a displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to formulate the problem. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite beams under general loadings, addressing the effects of fiber angle, laminate stacking sequence and loading parameters.

  • MVRDV is most important architect as created interesting architectural space in contemporary architecture, and so they applies to the unique theory in their architecture. They used to architectural diagram, program, datascape, density as a design tool. Especially, they have create new architectural space and form in using architectural diagram, program, datascape, density, and void. So, this study is purposed to explain how they use as architectural tool to make composition of it's architectural space and is purpose to explain what is their main concept in architectural space. MVRDV's architectural space has fundamental methodology. That is Datascape on uncertainty and continuity between urban space and architectural space. The former consist in using diagram and architectural program and the latter consist in operating architectural void and inner continuity surface. The conclusion is follows 1. The mode of spacial composition by architectural void is correspond density of city as MVRDV's architectural thinking. 2. The mode of spacial composition by architectural program is ambiguous to the boundary between inner and exterior space by transparency. 3. The mode of spacial composition by architectural diagram make to generate the architectural form and space, through the reinterpretation and relocation of architectural program. 4. The mode of spacial composition inner continuity plane is make relative between site and inner space.

Evaluation of Structural Performance on Corbel in the Reinforced Concrete (철근콘크리트 코오벨 부재의 구조성능 평가 및 내력 추정)

  • In order to identify the exact behavior of corbel section, the horizontal force acting on corbel section should be considered as well as the vertical force. In this study, a new corbel section, which is economical and easy to construct, is developed by evaluating the exact strength of the section. Experiments were performed to verify the strengths of the proposed sections comparing with those of the currently used section. The summary of the experiment results are as follows: 1) In order to minimize the horizontal force effect, it was found that the use of pre-stressing was most effective, and that TB type corbel section is a most efficient section in terms of economy and workability. 2) The experimentally obtained strength of corbel section matched well with that estimated using shear friction theory. Therefore, it is concluded that shear friction theory would be very useful if a precise crack angie in the corbel section, which is pre-stressed by PS strings and threaded bolts, is available.
