  • Despite all efforts to reduce construction disaster, construction site accident rate has steadily increased in Korea since 2008. As a different approach from traditional research, there is a growing issue about design for safety concept to prevent construction disaster. The notion is that construction worker's safety need to be considered at design phase, not only at construction phase. Globally, the notion has been noted that to improve the safety of the worker and used in practice. However, in Korea, most of safety management guidelines are limited to construction phase. From recent statistics, only 1.4 percent of designer feel responsible for safety accident at construction site. In this circumstance, this research find out safety guidelines through literatures reviews and practical experience of safety management in other country which apply design for safety concept. Selected guidelines are verified by survey which is evaluated with risk, function, cost, time and aesthetic view categories. Through the survey, define guidelines which could be effectively applied in Korea. By using proposed safety guidelines for design phase, preventing construction accident and improving designer's recognition of safety issue at design phase are expected.

  • The space planning and interior layout of recovery unit should be determined carefully for patient's nursing and observation which is considered to prevent infection and to cope quickly with emergency situation after surgical operation. Recently, the recovery unit in medical facilities is planned and managed without consideration of operating system, sanitary facilities and prior condition of space. Therefore, there is required to the logical criterion of architectural planning for patient's recovery unit which is concerned about opinion of medical team, anesthetist, sanitarian, architect and patient as a user. As the result, this study would apply to design guideline for the architectural planning of patient's recovery unit.

  • The present study is an analysis of the process and affects of interior design accreditation by FIDER(Foundation of Interior Design Education Research) in the United States. Due to the consequences of becoming a member of WTO(World Trade Organization), currently Architectural programs in Korea are seeking ways to set up this accreditational system. The history of interior design education has always been closely interconnected with architectural education, moreover the educational system in Korea has long been affected by that of the United States. Therefore, the author believes that it is crucial for interior design educators to understand the meanings and affects of accreditation system in order to be prepared for this globalization. This paper analyzes the accreditation system between Architectural and Interior Design programs in the United States with that of Korea. It also presents an In-depth study of FIDER accreditation process in the interior design program at Kansas State University, where the author has participated as a preparation member. Thus hope to serve as a guideline for self evaluating interior design programs in Korea.

  • With its rapid modernization and the unparalleled rate at which its society is aging, South Korea faces the need for a dramatic increase in its supply of nursing homes. Among the spacial components of nursing homes, residential units are considered as an essential part because the older person in nursing homes usually spend most of their time in residential units and the nursing homes are mainly composed of various residential units. It is necessary, therefore, to prepare a guideline for the plan of residential units in order to design the healthy and efficient nursing homes. This paper has first identified the concept of residential unit and analyzed 55 cases in the 51 nursing homes from 4 countries. On the basis of this analysis, architectural prototypes of residential units have been proposed and the architectural characteristics of them have been compared analytically.

  • A case study is a beforehand research to develope 3D architectural design guide line for building and construction. For this case study, the research investigates several cases around world such as Building Information Modeling Guide Series of U.S. GSA(General Service Administration), BIM/IFC User Guide of IAI Germany, IDM(Information Delivery Manual) of IAI Norway, CORENet of Singapore the Ministry of National Development with Building and Construction Authority, and Helsinki University of Technology Auditorium Hall 600(HUT-600) of IAI Finland. The common thing of each case is using IFC for sharing information and interoperability in the life cycle of building. Through the case study, it shows the way how the 3D architectural design guide adapted in Korean situation.

  • In this study, a method to determine the design capacities of nonpoint source (NPS) pollutant treatment facilities in urban areas was suggested. A facility capacity to treat 80 percent of total SS discharge was estimated by 2-year rainfall - runoff - build-up and wash-off simulation at Goonja drainage district in Seoul. For wash-off simulation, four wash-off models (EMC, RC, EXP, and Joo model) were used. As the results, 80 percent of total SS discharge could be treated with only 7.7~31.4% facility capacity of peak flow. The suggested method and results will provide a guideline to determine design capacities of NPS pollutant treatment facility in urban areas.

  • Nowadays the Design-Build Delivery Method in public sector has been remarkably grown up in applying owing to its merits such as shortening construction duration. The Fast-Track is the wide-using method for accelerating schedule at Design-Build projects. But the public agency is in trouble to execute Fast-Track because of the lack of guideline for its process. As a result, in some cases applying Fast-Track methods, cost and construction duration are increased more than cases of non-Fast-Track projects. In this study, through the questionnaire surveys to professionals having actual implementation experiences as a construction manager, owner or general contractor, key success vehicles of Fast-Track are induced.

  • Mobile devices with Android OS and iOS have been emerged as mobile computing devices where various software applications are deployed. Furthermore, they are anticipated to be used not only for traditional personal computing but also for enterprise computing. However, such mobile devices have their intrinsic characteristics such as limited resources and flexible network capabilities, which are not revealed in traditional computers. Hence, there is high demand for methods to develop mobile applications with reflecting their intrinsic characteristics. Since those characteristics belong to non-functional requirements, they should be reflected in architecture design while designing mobile applications. To design architecture, the architecture drivers that are architecture non-functional requirements are decided from mobile application characteristics. Conventional architecture design methods do not consider those characteristics so that the methods cannot be straightforwardly applied to mobile applications. In this paper, to efficiently develop mobile applications reflecting those characteristics, we propose a set of architecture patterns and define a guideline to apply those patterns. First, we define the characteristics of mobile applications distinguished and derive architectural drivers from them. Then, we propose architecture patterns in terms of static and dynamic views and define an architectural guideline to apply the patterns to designing architecture for mobile application. And, we perform case studies to verify the applicability of proposed patterns. Finally, we assess the proposed architecture patterns by proving how the patterns can fulfill identified architecture drivers and by comparing our approach with previous works.

  • Recently adoption of BIM technology for building renovation and remodeling has been increased in construction industry. However most buildings have trouble in 2D drawing-based BIM modeling, because 2D drawings have not been updated real situations continually. Applying reverse engineering, this study analysed the point cloud data structure and the process for guideline of reverse engineering of architectural MEP, and deducted the relating considerations. To active usage of 3D scanning technique in domestic, the objective of this study is to analyze the point cloud data processing from real site with terrestrial LiDAR and the process from data gathering to data acquisition.

  • As the needs for the mega-sized, high-rise and irregular shape of building increase, domestic application of BIM in construction industry is increasing in recent years. In this circumstance, interests in BIM modeling and modeling detail level have been also increased. BIM that is based on a three-dimensions, requires a specific and precise building expressions. And model expression level required for each phase such as design, construction, and maintenance of the construction project could be different as its needs. Because that it is not clear to define the criteria for the expression level of construction BIM model, It is difficult to decide how detail and what to model is appropriate in the practical application of BIM model. It could be the reason why the productivity in construction project became lower and lower. In this study we consider the way how to improve the productivity of BIM and analyze the appropriate representation level of construction BIM model through the experts' survey. The results of study could suggest the basis for an appropriate expression level of construction BIM model.
