There are many problems in application of FRP reinforcing bars as shear reinforcement, since bending of FRP bars is not a feasible process on construction site. Even though FRP bars can be manufactured in bent shape, they have lower strength at bent location. However, there are no serious problems to use FRP bars as flexural reinforcement. Plates or slabs like bridge decks, in general, do not need shear reinforcements. These types of members with FRP flexural reinforcement have lower shear strength than those with conventional steel flexural reinforcement. However, reliable process or equation for shear strength estimation of FRP reinforced concrete without shear reinforcement are not established, yet. In this study, predicted shear strength obtained from available design equations and assessment equations are compared with 211 experimental results. The results showed that among the current design codes, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (ISE) provided the best estimation. ACI 440.1R-06 provided conservative results with degree of dispersion similar to that of ISE. In addition, regression analysis on the collected experimental results was conducted to develop regression models. As a result, a new reliable shear strength equation was proposed.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the optimal mix design of the sound absorption material that is made from perlite and various binder systems for noise barrier wall. The polymer cement slurry which is made from two types of polymer dispersions, and silicone type inorganic material are used as binder. The test specimens are prepared with various polymer cement ratios, binder ratios, and tested for strengths, freezing and thawing and sound absorption performance by the tube and the reverberation room methods. From the test results, the difference of sound absorption coefficient by the tube method is a little recognized, however, noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of test specimens bound by the polymer cement slurry is in the ranges of 0.48 to 0.51. They are a little higher than those bound by cement only, and are lower values than recommended value of 0.7 by the Ministry of Environment. However, the sound absorption coefficient of test specimens at low frequency range of 250 to 500 Hz by reverberation room method shows very high values as 0.84 to 1.00, and 0.57 to 0.77 at the high frequency. The test specimens with polymer cement slurry binder have a good balance between performance and cost, and have proper properties in strengths, freezing and thawing resistance as sound absorption material for noise barrier wall. It is apparent that the good sound absorption material can be produced according to the optimum mix design that is recommended from this study.

Military Barracks and Bachelor Officer's Quarters are public buildings representing architectural characteristics with repeating the same room modules. These buildings require easy dismantling and reusing for the next generation' military re-organization. For these reasons, since 2005, the modular construction has been applied to military buildings. The most important factors required for modular military buildings are standardization, lowcost construction and reusable construction method. However, conventional modular building system have not been matched with these requirements. This study suggests a new modular system for Bachelor Officer's Quarters using Six-sigma design tool. To reflect the voices of customers, market study and surveys were carried out. Through the QFD, the voices of customers were converted into quality characteristics of building system for BOQ. The various design concepts meeting customer's requirement were derived by the QFD and Pugh matrix methodology. The proposed modular building system shows 80% increased factory production rate and 62% decreased weight of steel frame as compared with the conventional modular building system.

The perimeter structure in high-rise buildings, which plays a major role in resisting lateral forces, is generally formed by the orthogonal placement of the beam and column, but currently various grid patterns are implemented. In a previous study, the adaptability of the $IsoTruss^{(R)}$ grid (ITG) as a perimeter structure was examined. In this study, a method of estimating the required cross sectional area of a member in a preliminary design is proposed. The members of the perimeter structure are placed in three planes, perpendicular (PPR), parallel (PPL) and oblique (POQ) to the lateral loading, and the stiffness of the members in the POQ was taken into account by projecting them onto the PPL or PPR. Three models are established for member size zoning through the height of the building, in order to investigate the effect of the shear and moment in the calculation of the required cross sectional area. To examine the effectiveness of this study, a 64-story building is designed and analyzed. The effect of the member size zoning was examined by comparing the maximum lateral displacement, required steel amount, and axial strength ratio of the columns. Judging from the maximum lateral displacement, which was 97.3% of the allowable limit, the proposed formula seems to be implemental in sizing the members of an ITG structure at the initial stage of member selection.
The objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the effect of heat curing methods on the temperature history and strength development of slab concrete exposed to $-10^{\circ}C$. The goal was to determine proper heat curing methods for the protection of nuclear power plant structures against early-age frost damage under adverse (cold) conditions. Two types of methods were studied: heat insulation alone and in combination with a heating cable. For heat curing with heat insulation alone, either sawdust or a double layer bubble sheet (2-BS) was applied. For curing with a combination of heat insulation and a heating cable, an embedded heating cable was used with either a sawdust cover, a 2-BS cover, or a quadruple layer bubble sheet (4-BS) cover. Seven different slab specimens with dimensions of $1200{\times}600{\times}200$ mm and a design strength of 27 MPa were fabricated and cured at $-10^{\circ}C$ for 7 d. The application of sawdust and 2-BS allowed the concrete temperature to fall below $0^{\circ}C$ within 40 h after exposure to $-10^{\circ}C$, and then, the temperature dropped to $-10^{\circ}C$ and remained there for 7 d owing to insufficient thermal resistance. However, the combination of a heating cable plus sawdust or 2-BS maintained the concrete temperature around $5^{\circ}C$ for 7 d. Moreover, the combination of the heating cable and 4-BS maintained the concrete temperature around $10^{\circ}C$ for 7 d. This was due to the continuous heat supply from the heating cable and the prevention of heat loss by the 4-BS. For maturity development, which is an index of early-age frost damage, the application of heat insulation materials alone did not allow the concrete to meet the minimum maturity required to protect against early-age frost damage after 7 d, owing to poor thermal resistance. However, the combination of the heating cable and the heat insulating materials allowed the concrete to attain the minimum maturity level after just 3 d. In the case of strength development, the heat insulation materials alone were insufficient to achieve the minimum 7-d strength required to prevent early-age frost damage. However, the combination of a heating cable and heat insulating materials met both the minimum 7-d strength and the 28-d design strength owing to the heat supply and thermal resistance. Therefore, it is believed that by combining a heating cable and 4-BS, concrete exposed to $-10^{\circ}C$ can be effectively protected from early-age frost damage and can attain the required 28-d compressive strength.

This study was done to reduce total energy demand based on resource shortage problems and to provide improvement points for more efficient adjustment of the high insulation standards for saving energy in Korea. The demand sensitivity was fully considered by varying the slope of each building. The energy performance of the building was maximized by the introduction of outdoor air at night. A final low-energy building model was developed with the two measures combined, and the short-term operation of the night-fuzzy ventilation system was simulated. The result showed a reduction of about 6 to 7 percent compared to the base model. The results could have many implications in terms of the need to conduct demand sensitivity analyses in architectural design.
The current seismic design code prescribes that a structural wall should be designed as a special shear wall when the building height is more than 60 m and its seismic design category is classified as D. However, the use of a special shear wall has a negative effect on constructability and economic efficiency. In the present study, the seismic performance of a special shear wall and a special shear wall with relaxed reinforcement detail was evaluated through a cyclic reversal loading test. The specimens were constructed to measure the results of the experimental variable regarding the reinforcement details of the special boundary element. Next, the seismic performances of a special shear wall structural system and that of a special shear wall structural system with relaxed reinforcement detail was evaluated by methods proposed in the FEMA P695. The cyclic reversal loading test results of this study showed that the performance of the shear wall with relaxed reinforcement detail was almost similar to the performance of a special shear wall and has the performance which requested from standard. The results of the seismic evaluation showed that all special shear walls with relaxed reinforcement detail are satisfied with the design code and seismic performance.
A new modified full scale double tee slabs with the length of nib plate - 1,500 mm were suggested, designed, and experimentally evaluated up to the loading of flexural failure. This slabs were composed of the tee section which was same to original PCI double tee and the plate section which was modified in a new shape, and the prestressing force was applied at the bottom of tee section only. This specimens were made from the domestic precast factory. The safety and serviceability of the modified nib plate with the dapped ends were evaluated up to the ultimate flexural strength of tee section. As the experimental loading increased, the flexural crackings developed first in the bottom of the slab and they changed to the increased flexural shear and inclined shear crackings in the nib and dapped portion of the double tees. The suggested modified double tee slabs failed in ductile above the design loading with many evenly distributed flexural crackings. The thickness of nib plate - 250 mm does not show any cracking under the service loading and show several minor flexural cracking up to the ultimate state of tee portion. The proposed specimens were satisfied with the strength and ductility requirements in the design code provisions in the tests. Additional experimental tests are required to reduce the depth and tensile reinforcement of nib plate concrete for the practical use of this system effectively.

While the recent high demand for mega-tall buildings has led to the development of high-performance and high-strength steels, the requirements for architectural-structure-performance steel have been raised as engineers recognize the potential damage that an earthquake can wreak on a tall building. A 600MPa-class steel has emerged to meet such need, and many studies are currently exploring its practical applications on civil engineering works and mega-tall buildings. The available data on the horizontal-force behaviors of structures built with such new steel, however, are still insufficient. There is an urgent need to look into its design data, especially its toughness, and to compare the plastic strain ratios of column-to-beam connections using high-strength steel and regular steel. One of the first studies on the behavior of a column-to-beam connection using 600MPa-class steel (SM570 TMC), this thesis analyzes such steel's structural performance by conducting a structural test on seismic resistance on a full-scale column-to-beam welded connection with non-scallop and recommended-scallop details. Compared with the previous studies on SM490, this thesis evaluates the weldability of SM570 TMC and presents the latter's seismic design data for use in testing its practical application.

Concrete mix design controls the various concrete properties such as workability and strength. Fresh concrete requires workability and the hardened concrete requires compressive strength. If using the concrete from different supplier concurrently, the concrete placed can show different properties unlike originally designed. However most of construction sites place the concrete from several companies. One of the predictable problems is whether the ultimate performance of concrete achieves the originally designed performance after placing the concrete from several companies. Therefore this research aims to keep the concrete quality in the above cases. This research has been done through literature review, questionnaire and the verification at the sample construction site. A literature review describes the general characteristics and quality control of concrete and a questionnaire describes the awareness and implementation of Korean Construction Specification(KCS). The production capacity and the delivery capacity of concrete suppliers is smaller than the daily quantity required on the sample site, therefore the placing of the concrete with different mixing ratio is inevitable and it can not keep the KCS. As a conclusion, this research proposed 5 alternatives and one of them has been adopted, i.e. to unify the concrete mix design of multiple concrete suppliers.
