  • The present study was aimed to investigate the dependence of fatigue property on microporosity variation of low-pressure die-cast (LPDC) A356 alloy. The fatigue property of A356 alloy was evaluated through high cycle fatigue test, and the microporosity-terms used were the fractographic porosity measured from SEM observation on fractured surface and the volumetric porosity obtained through the density measurement using Archimedes's principle. The number of cycles to failure of A356 alloys depends obviously upon the variation of fractographic porosity, and can describe in terms of the defect susceptibility which depends on the microporosity variation at a given value of stress amplitude. The modified Basquin's equation was suggested through the combination of microporosity variation and static maximum tensile stress to fatigue strength coefficient. Using modified Basquin's equation, it could suggest that the maximum values of fatigue strength coefficient and exponent achievable in defect-free condition of A356 alloy are 265 MPa, -0.07, respectively.

  • The growing use of aluminum for castings over the past decade has brought with it the increased scrutiny of component properties. One area that has received much attention is the effect of in inclusions - or impurities particles held in the metal - on casting properties. A new method of electromagnetic separation for removal of inclusions in aluminum alloy melts is proposed. The principle is that as the electromagnetic force induced in metal acts on inclusions due to low electric conductivity, they are moved to the direction opposite to electromagnetic force and can be separated and removed from the melt. Experiments were carried out on A356 melt mixed alumina particles and commercial Al alloys of ADC 10 and 12. In the experiment using A356, it was proved that $Al_2O_3$ particles was separated and removed continuously from matrix melt by electromagnetic force. Based on these results, the continuous separation experiment that used ADC 10, 12 was carried and the cleanliness of melt was assessed by the amount of porosity, hydrogen contents, PoDFA and mechanical properties through tensile test. As the results of analyses, the amount of porosity and hydrogen contents decreased without variation of chemical composition in the specimen that passed the electromagnetic continuous separator. In addition, tensile strength and elongation of this specimen increased by $20{\sim}30%$ because of reduction of inclusions.

  • Purpose: In performing breast reconstruction, making symmetrical breast is still a challenge. A precise estimate of the volume of the breast specimen is necessary to reconstruct a symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing breast. This study aims at finding out the relationship with breast tissue density and body mass index designed to apply for breast reconstruction. Methods: By using the Archimedes' principle, the authors calculated the volume of the breast specimen and drew a correlation between the density of breast specimen and BMI. From October 2002 to November 2004, this method was used on 197 patients to predict breast volume for TRAM flap reconstruction. Results: The mean density was 0.9954g/cc and had no correlation with BMI (p-value=0.069). There was no difference between denstiy of breast tissue after skin spared mastectomy and that of breast tissue after nipple spared mastectomy. Conclusion: These data will be helpful to predict the needed volume for breast reconstruction.

  • Archimedes showed that for a point P on a parabola X and a chord AB of X parallel to the tangent of X at P, the area S of the region bounded by the parabola X and chord AB is four thirds of the area T of triangle ${\Delta}ABP$. It is well known that the area U formed by three tangents to a parabola is half of the area T of the triangle formed by joining their points of contact. Recently, the first and third authors of the present paper and others proved that among strictly locally convex curves in the plane ${\mathbb{R}}^2$, these two properties are characteristic ones of parabolas. In this article, in order to generalize the above mentioned property $S={\frac{4}{3}}T$ for parabolas we study strictly locally convex curves in the plane ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ satisfying $S={\lambda}T+{\nu}U$, where ${\lambda}$ and ${\nu}$ are some functions on the curves. As a result, we present two conditions which are necessary and sufficient for a strictly locally convex curve in the plane to be an open arc of a parabola.

  • Accurate measurement of green density of compacted part in the powder metallurgy industry is rather fundamental but extremely important process that decide the quality of the sintered part. In case of green sheet P/M product, the green density as well as the distribution of the density must be examined for the same reasons. Currently in most cases, density measuring process is being performed applying conventional Archimedes principles. However this method is not only time-consuming but also often inaccurate because of the inherent nature of the process, such as part sectioning, closing of surface porosity with wax and weighing in air and in water. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a faster and more accurate method to measure the density of green sheet P/M product. In this work, a nondestructive density measurement device using gamma-ray absorption principles was constructed and the optimum condition for measuring green density of P/M sheet and its distribution was sought. The results showed that this method was very effective in terms of measuring time and accuracy.

  • A centrifugal pump was selected as a basic study, for it was utilized widely at the industry among various types of pumps. The purpose of this study was to develop the software for design of centrifugal pump. The step of this design was divided into two stages. First, the impeller was designed by the experiences and theory of A.J.Stepanoff, and the head was checked whether the design of impeller was acceptable. Second, the volute chamber was designed by the Archimedes spiral. Then, These procedures of impeller and volute chamber were developed into the software in C-language. Checked the validity of the developed software, the results were consistent with the actual pump produced domestically.

  • In the present study, six silicone rubber doped by tellurium borate oxides were fabricated using the casting method. The densities of the fabricated silicon rubber-doped by tellurium borate oxides samples were measured using the Archimedes Method. Moreover, the linear attenuation coefficient of silicone rubber doped tellurium borate oxides samples was evaluated experimentally using the hyper pure germanium, and the recorded linear attenuation coefficient values were affirmed using the theoretical Phy-X program. The experimental measurements were performed using the narrow beam transmission method with radioactive isotopes Am-241, Cs-137, and Co-60 with energies of 59, 661, 1173, and 1332 keV. The linear attenuation coefficient values showed an enhancement by 4.73 times, 1.20 time, 1.17, time, and 1.17 time, respectively at gamma photon energies of 59, 661, 1173, and 1332 keV, when the TeO2 concentration increased in the fabricated composites from 0 to 50 wt%. The enhancement of the linear attenuation coefficient values has a positive effect on the transmission rate values where the half-value thickness and transmission rate were decreased accompanied by an increase in the RPE.

  • The soda lime waste glass powder was dissolved in NaOH-4M solution to synthesize an alkaline activator, which was used to activate Class-C fly ash (FA). Compressive and flexural strength tests were conducted to determine the mechanical properties. Archimedes' principle was applied to measure the porosity of samples, (SEM-EDX) and XRD was used to study the microstructure and phase changes of samples. Through Inductive Coupled Plazma technique, the solution was found to increase the concentration of Si as the amount of dissolved glass powder was increased. Owing to the increased concentration of Si in an alkaline solution, the reactivity of FA was accelerated resulting in an increased strength and reduced porosity. Additionally, the dissolution of FA was improved as well as the formation of amorphous phases in the matrix was also enhances with the concentration of increased Si in an alkaline solution.

  • Thorium dioxide (ThO2)-silicon carbide (SiC) composite fuel pellets were fabricated via the spark plasma-sintering (SPS) method to investigate the role of the addition of SiC in enhancing the thermal conductivity of ThO2 fuel. SiC particles with an average size of 1㎛ in 10 and 15 vol% were used to manufacture the composite pellets. The changes in the composites' densification, microstructure and thermal conductivity were explored by comparing them with pure ThO2 pellets. The structural and microstructural characterization of the composite pellets has revealed that SPS could manufacture high-quality composite pellets without having any reaction products or intermetallic. The density measurement by the Archimedes principles and the grain size from the electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis has indicated that the composites have higher densities and smaller grain sizes than the pellets without SiC addition. Finally, thermal conductivity as a function of temperature has revealed that sintered ThO2-SiC composites showed an increase of up to 56% in thermal conductivity compared to pristine ThO2 pellets.
