Introduction: Maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) is essential before surgery under general anesthesia in maxillofacial trauma patients. MMF is used basically to reconstruct the occlusion and occlusal stability to recover the facial shape and oral functions. The arch bar and wire is a traditional method for MMF, but it can not only bring pressure to the periodontal ligaments and teeth but also cause a penetrating injury to the surgeons. Materials and Methods: In this study, 198 patients with an open reduction using a manual reduction without MMF from September 2005 to May 2010 in Dankook University Dental Hospital were subjected to a follow-up evaluation during the postoperative 4 months periods. This study evaluated the incidence of complications according to the condition of the patient (gender, age), the state of bony union of the fracture sites and a numeric rating scale evaluation for postoperative pain scoring. Results: 1. The complications were classified into major and minor according to the seriousness, and the major complication rate was as low as 2.02%. Only 2 cases of re-operations (1.01%) were encountered. In the classification according to the fracture line, plate fracture was observed in both cases of mandibular symphysis fracture, and angle fractures and loosening of two screws were noted in the case of mandibular angle fracture. 2. The complication rate was similar regardless of gender and age. 3. The degree of bony union was satisfactory, and the complication rate was reduced as the bony union improved. 4. More patients complained of pain as the operation time was increased. Conclusion: The use of MMF is not always necessary if a skilled assistant is provided to help manually reduce the fracture site. Compared to other studies of mandibular fracture surgery using MMF, the complication rate was similar using only manual reduction and the patients' discomfort was reduced without MMF.
The successful replacement of missing teeth has been one driving aim behind the emergence of implant dentistry as both a technology and clinical vocation for over four decades. To date, a multitude of dental implant devices had been designed and utilized in the patient population. Most of these devices have been designed without support of the engineering criteria. The long-term success of any dental implant is dependent upon the optimization of stresses which occurs during oral function and parafunction. Although many studies have examined the biologic interactions between dental implants and living tissue, few studies have been reported on the biomechanical aspects of dental implants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution of osseointegrated prosthesis on certain conditions, such as amount of load, location of load, length of fixtures, number of fixtures used, arch shape, bone quality, etc. Three dimentional finite element analysis was used for this study. FEM models were created using commercial software(Super SAP. for IBM 16 bit AT computer. All elements were 8-node brick, isoparametric. Mandible and prosthesis was modeled with 780 elements and 1074 nodes. The results were as follows : 1. In case of cantilever extension, there was a compressive stress at the base of the first implant and a tensile stress at the base of the second implant. 2. The stresses were linearly proportional to the amount of load. 3. The stresses were linearly proportional to the length of cantilever. 4. There was a stress concentration at the neck of the implant and bone under horizontal loads.
Louis 1. Kahn was a wise architect who learned from history. He developed his own unique architecture by combining his creative sense with design principles and vocabularies that can be found in historical architecture. When restricting a space, he surrounded the space with thick walls as it had been done in historical buildings. The interior space encompassed by this method became a center-oriented and stable space. The objective of this study is to find the characteristics of Kahn's interior spaces by analyzing his projects in terms of space, form, daylight and materials. For this purpose, five works that are considered to have significance from the aspect of interior design were selected and analyzed. The characteristics realized through this study are as follows. A) Spatial features: 1) Generally speaking, each required space has been arranged symmetrically. 2) Being clearly defined as the main space, the subsidiary space, or the service space, each space also was placed very functionally. 3) The space encompassed by thick walls became a center-oriented, stable space. And in most case, it was characterized as a dark space. B) Formative features: 4) The space was defined as a basic solid such as a cylinder, a hexahedron, and an octagonal box, and was developed into a complex shape by the recessed windows. 5) Historical vocabularies such as an arch, a vault, and a dome were reinterpreted in new ways by kahn's own eyes. 6) Haying diverse shapes, the skylights enrich the space in terms of form. C) Daylight feature: 7) The vertical light entering through the skylights creates a solemn and mysterious atmosphere. 8) Given the shadows from the windows that change according to time, the interior space becomes a very vivid space. D) Material feature: 9) Harmonized with cold and smooth materials such as exposed concrete, metal, and glass, the interior space provides a modern atmosphere. 10) Warm appearing wood was used for furniture and part of walls or floors. The effective use of wood takes on a role that is quite complementary to the cold ambience of the smooth and cold materials. 11) With flexibility In building shapes, the concrete becomes the form-endowing materials.
This study aims to present a three dimensional finite element model to investigate the wave propagation in a concrete filled steel tubular column (CFSC) due to transient impact load. Both the concrete and steel are regarded as linear elastic material. The impact load is simulated by a semi sinusoidal impulse. Besides the CFSC models, a concrete column (CC) model is established for comparing under the same loading condition. The propagation characteristics of the transient waves in CFSC are analyzed in detail. The results show that at the intial stage of the wave propagation, the velocity waves in CFSC are almost the same as those in CC before they arrive at the steel tube. When the waves reach the column side, the velocity responses of CFSC are different from those of CC and the difference is more and more obvious as the waves travel down along the column shaft. The travel distance of the wave front in CFSC is farther than that in CC at the same time. For different wave speeds in steel and concrete material, the wave front in CFSC presents an arch shape, the apex of which locates at the center of the column. Differently, the wave front in CC presents a plane surface. Three dimensional effects on top of CFSC are obvious, therefore, the peak value and arrival time of incident wave crests have great difference at different locations in the radial direction. High-frequency waves on the waveforms are observed. The time difference between incident and reflected wave peaks decreases significantly with r/R when r/R < 0.6, however, it almost keeps constant when $r/R{\geq}0.6$. The time duration between incident and reflected waves calculated by 3D FEM is approximately equal to that calculated by 1D wave theory when r/R is about 2/3.

Utilization of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been increased as an alternative in a bid to supplement the problems with general construction materials such as long-term problems corrosion, etc. However, there are still many problems in using a linear-shaped FRP material for a tunnel lining structure which has arch-shape in general. In this study, the loading tests for the FRP-concrete composite member was carried out to evaluate their applicability as a tunnel reinforcement material, which are based on the results from preliminary numerical studies for identifying the behavioral characteristics of FRP-concrete composite member. Moreover, numerical analysis under the same condition as applied in the loading tests was again conducted for analysis of mechanical behavior of the composite member. As a result of the load test and numerical analysis, it appears that the FRP-concrete composite member is greatly subject to shear movement caused by bending tension acting on the interface between two constituent members.

The differential equations governing free vibrations of the elastic arches with unsymmetric axis are derived in Cartesian coordinates rather than in polar coordinates. in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for parabolic arches with both clamped ends and both hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and SAP 2000 are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The convergent efficiency is highly improved under the newly derived differential equations in Cartesian coordinates. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters the rise to chord length ratio. the span length to chord length ratio, and the slenderness ratio. Also typical mode shapes of vibrating arches are presented.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of different palatal vault configurations on the accuracy and scan speed of intraoral scans (IO) of completely edentulous arches. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three different virtual models of a completely edentulous maxillary arch with different palatal vault heights- Cl I moderate (U-shaped), Cl II deep (steep) and Cl III shallow (flat)-were digitally designed using CAD software (Meshmixer; Autodesk, USA) and 3D-printed using SLA-based 3D-printer (XFAB; DWS, Italy) (n = 30; 10 specimens per group). Each model was scanned using intraoral scanner (Trios 3; 3ShapeTM, Denmark). Scanning time was recorded for all samples. Scanning accuracy (trueness and precision) were evaluated using digital subtraction technique using Geomagic Control X v2020 (Geomagic; 3DSystems, USA). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used to detect differences in scanning time, trueness and precision among the test groups. Statistical significance was set at α = .05. RESULTS. The scan process could not be completed for Class II group and manufacturer's recommended technique had to be modified. ANOVA revealed no statistically significant difference in trueness and precision values among the test groups (P=.959 and P=.658, respectively). Deep palatal vault (Cl II) showed significantly longer scan time compared to Cl I and III. CONCLUSION. The selection of scan protocol in complex cases such as deep palatal vault is of utmost importance. The modified, adopted longer path scan protocol of deep vault cases resulted in increased scan time when compared to the other two groups.

This paper investigates the in-plane stability of fixed shallow arches. The shape of the arches is parabolic and the uniformly distributed load is used in the study. The nonlinear governing equilibrium equation of the general arch is adopted to derive the incremental form of the load-displacement relationship and the buckling load of the fixed shallow arches. From the results, it is found that buckling modes (symmetric or asymmetric) of the arches are closely related to the dimensionless rise H, which is the function of slenderness ratio and the rise to span ratio of such arches. Moreover, the threshold of different buckling modes and buckling load for fixed shallow arches are proposed. A series of finite element analysis are conducted and then compared with proposed ones. From the comparative study, the proposed formula provides the good prediction of the buckling load of fixed shallow arches.

Utilization of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been enlarged as a substitution material to the general construction materials having certain long-term problems such as corrosion, etc. However, it could be difficult to apply the FRP material, which has a linear shape generally, to an arch-shaped tunnel structure. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this study to develop a device to form a designed cross section of FRP material by pulling out with a curvature. A sample of the circled FRP product was successfully produced and then the sample has been tested to identify its physical characteristics. Then, intensive feasibility studies on the circled FRP panel to be used for a tunnel lining structure have been carried out by numerical analyses. As a result, it appears that the new circled FRP-concrete composite panel has a high capability to be used for a tunnel lining material without any structural problem.

A three-dimensional numerical method based on the Green's integral equation is developed to predict the motion response and drift force in waves for the ocean monitoring facilities. In this method, we use source and doublet distribution, and triangular and rectangular eliments. To eliminate the irregular frequency phenomenon, the method of improved integral equation is applied and the time-mean drift force is calculated by the method of direct pressure integration over the body surface. To conform the validity of the present numerical method, some calculations for the floating sphere are performed and it is shown that the present method provides sufficiently reliable results. As a calculation example for the real facilities, the motion response and the drift force of the vertical cylinder type ocean monitoring buoy with 2.6 m diameter and 3,77 m draft are calculated and discussed. The obtained results of motion response can be used to determine the shape and dimension of the buoy to reduce the motion response, and other data such as the effect of motion reduction due to a damper can be predictable through these motion calculations. Also, the calculation results of drift force can be used in the design procedure of mooring system to predict the maximum wave load acting on the mooring system. The present method has, in principle, no restriction in the application to the arbitrary shape facilities. So, this method can be a robust tool for the design, installation, and operation of various kinds of the floating-type ocean monitoring facilities.
