During the recent years, resistance mechanisms of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings against progressive collapse are investigated extensively. Although a general agreement is observed about their qualitative behavior in technical literature, there is not such a comprehensive point of view regarding the quantitative methods for predicting collapse resistance of RC members. Therefore, in the present study a simplified theoretical method is developed in order to predict general behavior of RC frames under the column removal scenario. In the introduced method, the robustness of the frame is extracted based on the capacity of the beams. The proposed method expresses ultimate arching and catenary capacities of the beams and also obtains the corresponding vertical displacements. Based on the calculated capacities, the introduced method also provides a quantitative assessment of structural robustness and determines whether or not the collapse occurs. The capability of the method is evaluated using experimental results in the literature. The evaluation study indicates that the proposed theoretical procedure can establish a reliable foundation for progressive collapse assessment of RC frame structures.
In the last decades there have been frequent reports of oscillations of slender tension members under simultaneous action of rain and wind - characterized by large amplitudes and low frequencies. The members, e.g. cables of cable-stayed bridges, slightly inclined hangers of arch bridges or cables of guyed-masts, show a circular cross section and low damping. These rain-wind induced vibrations negatively affect the serviceability and the lifespan of the structures. The present article gives a short literature review, describes a mathematical approach for the simulation of rain-wind induced vibrations, sums up some examples to verify the calculated results and discusses measures to suppress the vibrations.
The effect of initial combined load on the lateral free vibration of arches is investigated. For the analysis, P-M interaction own for the arches are obtained. The arches are circular arches which have constant cross-section and simply supported. Also, the arches are subjected both radial uniform distributed load which results in an axial compression on the cross-section and end moments that cause uniform bending action at the same time. All analysis are performed by finite element method based on Kang and Yoo's curved beam theory.
The wires for initial alignment purposes require a combination of excellent strength, excellent springiness, and a long rang of action. The variables in selecting appropriate arches for alignment are the arch wire material, its diameter, and the distance between attachments. The principle that there should be 0.02 inch clearance for initial wires means that an .016 diameter wire is the largest that should be considered for initial alignment in the .018 slot system. The three major possibilities for alignment arches are multistranded steel wires, nickel-titanium wires, and single-stranded steel wires with loops. The excellent choice for initial alignment in .018 bracket is .014 steel wire with loops.
This paper describes a proposal for crack width and deflection in RC flexural members. Because the serviceability provisions of the current codes are mainly based on only empirical relationships developed from test result and effective moment of inertia, crack width and deflections are contrary to the actual values. Based on nonlinear bond characteristics, tension stiffening effect, arch action and effective concrete tensile area. Then an equation is developed for predicting crack width and deflection in flexural members. The predicted results shows that as proposed model employed, crack width and deflections are different from estimated by the current KCI, MC 90 and EC 2 provisons, and the values predicted are in good agreement with experimentally measured values.
This paper deals with the shear deformation charateristics of concrete beams strengthened with steel/FRP Bar. Applying the shear behavioral model based on shear deformation compatibility to RC beams tested by Ahmed K. El-Sayed et al.(2006), their transverse deformation in the web are calculated at ultimated loads after decoupling the shear carried by arch action in each beams. The calculated transverse deformation at ultimated loads are nearly same for the different reinforcement ratio. From these results, the temporary transverse deformation limit criterion is deduced. Using the proposed temporary limit criterion, the shear strength of concrete beams strengthen with FRP Bar tested by Ahmed K. El-Sayed et al.(2006) is predicted. These predicted values are compared with the measured values and the results are also compared with the current ACI and JSCE equation. The proposed method predicts the ultimate shear capacities more accurately than the equation of ACI and JSCE code. The predictions by the ACI and JSCE code are founded to be very conservative.
This paper is to explain reasonable shear behavior that can apply usually to reinforced concrete beams on the basic concepts of existent analysis and experimental research information. This study is succession $paper^{2) 3) 4) 5)}$ of treatise announced in existing and main control variable of reinforced concrete beams with stirrups used internal force state factor($\alpha$). Shear failure of reinforced concrete beams with stirrups is Influenced greatly because of the actual geometrical shape(a/d) of the concrete and flexural reinforcement steel ratio, stirrup reinforcement ratio and concrete compression strength, size effect etc. Therefore, shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams with stirrups that flexural crack is happened can be explained easily through proper extent proposal of internal force state factor($\alpha$) that express internal force state flowing. Use existent variable truss model by analysis model to explain arch action. Also, wish to compose each failure factors and correlation with internal force state factor by function, and when diagonal cracks happens, internal force state factor($\alpha$) study whether shear stress and some effect are.
The present paper proposes a semi-empirical analytical expression that is capable of determining the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams with longitudinal bars, in the presence of reinforcing fibers and transverse stirrups. The expression is based on an evaluation of the strength contribution of beam and arch actions and it makes it possible to take their interaction with the fibers into account. For the strength contribution of stirrups, the effective stress reached at beam failure was considered by introducing an effectiveness function. This function shows the share of beam action strength contribution on the global strength of the beam calculated including the effect of fibers. The expression is calibrated on the basis of experimental data available in literature referring to fibrous reinforced concrete beams with steel fibers and recently obtained by the authors. It can also include the following variables in the strength previsions: - geometrical ratio of longitudinal bars in tension; - shear span to depth ratio; - strength of materials and fiber characteristics; - size effects. Finally, some of the more recent analytical expressions that are capable of predicting the shear strength of fibrous concrete beams, also in the presence of stirrups, are mentioned and a comparison is made with experimental data and with the results obtained by the authors.
