  • In the present study, the microstructure and Charpy V notch toughness of multipass $CO_2$ FCA weldment in three different heat inputs(1-3KJ/mm)were investigated. The weldments using two different domestic FCAW wires(AWS E71T-1 and E71T-5 equivalent) in C-Mn steel were chemically analysed. The following conclusions can be inferred. 1. T-1 wire Showed a stable arc transfer, less spatter and harsh, a better bead spreading and easy slag removal, whereas T-5 wire suffered from the arc stability, which tended to increase spatter and produce a more convex bead. 2.The microsturctures of the top beads of the weldments in three different heat inputs consisted of coarse-grained boundary ferrite and Widmanstatten ferrite side plate with increasing heat inputs. The modest fraction of acicular ferrite in the two wire weldments was observed in the 2KJ/mm heat input. 3.The fine-grained reheated zones of both welds consisted of a duplex microstructure of polygonal ferrite and second phases. 4. The basic flux weldment of T-5wires showed a higher Charpy impact property than that of T-1 wires because of a higher fraction of acicular ferrite in the weld microstructure.

  • Climatic zone in building code is an administrative district classification reflecting regional climatic characteristics. Use of Degree-Days is a fundamental method that can be used in various building design codes, analysis of building energy performance, and establishment of minimum thermal transmittance of building envelopes. Many foreign countries, such as the USA, the EU, Australia, Italy, India, China, etc., have already adapted climatic zone classification with degree-days, precipitation or amount of water vapor based on the characteristics of their own country's climate. In Korea, however, the minimum requirements for regional thermal transmittance are classified separately for the Jungbu area, Nambu area and Jeju Island with no definite criterion. In this study, degree-days of 255 Korean cities were used for climatic zone classification. Outdoor dry-bulb temperature data from the Korea Meteorological Administration for 1981~2010 was used to calculate degree-days. ArcGIS and the calculated degree-days were utilized to analyze and visualize climatic zone classification. As a result, depending on the distribution and distinctive differences in degree-days, four climatic zones were derived : 1) Central area, 2) Mountain area of Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces, 3) Southern area, and 4) Jeju Island. The climatic zones were suggested per administrative district for easy public understanding and utilization.

  • The mathematical set-up model was developed to reduce the mechanical property deviation in annealed and slightly rolled steel strip. The mechanical peculiarities of skin pass rolling process, such as high friction value and non-circular contact arc, low reduction and non-negligible entry and exit elastic zones as well as central restricted deformation zone are all taken into account. The deformation of work rolls is calculated with the influence function method and arbitrary contact arc shape is permitted. The strip deformation is modeled by slab method and the entry and exit elastic deformation zones are included. The strip restricted deformation zone near the neutral point is also considered. It was revealed that the new model has better accuracy than present regression model by statistical analysis with actual mill rolling data.

  • In case of overalyered wrapping roll, beadmark shape appear at wrapping roll surface due to irregular wear between weld bead. Irregular wear of this is caused by difference of hardness between weld bead. This study aims at investigating which matrix is good for removing of beadmark at wrapping roll surface. So, we make specimen with martensitic matrix and austenitic matrix. The overlayered alloys were deposited 4 times on a SS41 steel plate using self-shielding flux cored arc welding method. Difference of hardness between weld bead of specimen with matrix of martensite was higher than specimen with matrix of austenite both as-welded and after heat treatment. Therefore, austenitic matrix is between than martensitic matrix for removing of beadmark of wrapping roll surface.

  • The 29 May 2004 offshore Uljin, Korea earthquake was predominantly thrust-faulting at a depth of approximately 12 (±2) km. The mainshock attained the seismic moment of M0 =5.41 (±1.87)  1016 N m (Mw = 5.1). The focal mechanism indicates a subhorizontal P-axis trending 264° and plunging 2°. The orientation of P- and T-axis is consistent with the direction of absolute plate motion generally observed within the plates, hence the cause of the May 29 shock is the broad-scale stress pattern from the forces acting on the downgoing slab along the Japan trench and inhibiting forces balancing it. The 29 May 2004 earthquake occurred along a deep seated (~12 km), pre-existing feature that is expressed on the surface as the basement escarpment along the western and southern slopes of the Ulleung basin. The concentrated seismicity along this basement escarpment suggests that this feature may qualify as a seismic zone - the Ulleung basement escarpment seismic zone (UBESZ).

  • The offshore industry created a need for quality wet weld repairs. Wet welding is a fast method of repair providing sound, structural quality welds. It requires less support equipment than a similar underwater dry weld repair or the alternative mechanical connections. Compared to welds made in air, underwater wet welds are plagued by increased hardness due to rapid quenching by the surrounding water. In this paper is described the experimntal study of improving the cooling rates of wet welds of TMCP steel plate by shielding around weld arc surroundings. The principal results of this experimental investigation can be summarized as follows : By shielding around weld arc surrounding, the cooling rates resulting from wet welds on TMCP steel plate could be lower than that of nonshielded wet welds and the fesibility on high quality of mecanical properties of wet weld on TMCP steel plate was carried out with shielded weld arc surrounding.

  • A study was performed to determine the optimum height for an arc air gouging of temporary attachments, which were attached at the pressure vessel made of low alloy steel. Frequently, the crack occurred in the base metal by the excessive heat input during an arc air gouging process to remove the temporary attachments. A numerical analysis by 2-dimensional finite element method was performed to calculate the temperature distribution in the base metal during the removal of temporary attachments. And then the mock-up test was performed to verify the numerical results. Numerical values showed good agreement with the experimental results. These results indicated that the defects due to the excessive heat input during an arc air gouging were dependent on the height of temporary attachments remained above hie main products.

  • SM45C steel rods being used generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by Butt-GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) method. An estimation of fatigue life was studied by constructing S-N curve. Fatigue strength of base metal zone showed higher values than one of weld zone in low cycles between $10^4$ and $10^6$cycles. However, significant decrease in fatigue strength of base metal was found around $10^6$cycles, which were almost same as one of heat affected zone. This decrease was attributed that initial residual stress of the steel rods distributed by drawing process was diminished by continually applied load, and resulted in softening of base metal. The fatigue limit of the weld zone was highest in the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, and followed by in the order of deposited metal zone, base metal zone, and heat affected zone. Based on these results, it is revealed that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected within the region of the lowest fatigue limit of heat affected zone.

  • Precision approach and landing of aircraft in a remote landing zone autonomously present several challenges. Firstly, the exact location, orientation and elevation of the landing zone are not always known; secondly, the accuracy of the navigation solution is not always sufficient for this type of precision maneuver if there is no DGPS availability within close proximity. This paper explores an alternative approach for estimating the navigation parameters of the aircraft to the landing area using only time-differenced GPS carrier phase measurement and range measurements from a vision system. Distinct ground landmarks are marked before the landing zone. The positions of these landmarks are extracted from the vision system then the ranges relative to these locations are used as measurements for the extended Kalman filter (EKF) in addition to the precise time-differenced GPS carrier phase measurements. The performance of this navigation algorithm is demonstrated using simulation.
