Automatic Seam Tracking for Plasma Arc Welding of a Corrugation Panel (파형부재의 플라즈마 아크용접을 위한 자동 용접선 추적)

  • This paper describes an automatic weld seam tracking method of plasma arc welding system designed for the corrugation panel that consists of a linear section and a curved section with various curvatures. Due to the complexity of the panel shape, it is difficult to find a seam and operate a torch manually in the welding process. So, the laser vision sensor for seam tracking is designed for sensing the seam position and controlling a torch automatically. To achieve precise seam tracking, the design of sensor head, image simulation, and calibration are carried out. Through a series of experiment result, compensation algorithm is added and real time error compensation is achieved. The experiment result shows that this vision sensor works effectively. It will provide more precise welding performance and convenience to the operator.

  • Catalyst nanoparticles are prepared by arc plasma deposition (APD). First, overview of the APD technique is reviewed and second, some applications of the technique for nanocatalyst preparation are reviewed. Nanoparticles prepared by APD are typically 1~5 nm in size and their catalytic activity is generally better than that of conventional wet-chemically prepared nanocatalysts.

Preparation and Sintering Behavior of Fe Nanopowders Produced by Plasma Arc Discharge Process

  • The nano-sized Fe powders were prepared by plasma arc discharge process using pure Fe rod. The microstructure and the sintering behavior of the prepared nanopowders were evaluated. The prepared Fe nanopowders had nearly spherical shapes and consisted of metallic core and oxide shell structures. The higher volume shrinkage at low sintering temperature was observed due to the reduction of surface oxide. The nanopowders showed 6 times higher densification rate and more significant isotropic shrinkage behavior than those of micron sized Fe powders.

  • In the present study, ultrafined Zr-V-Fe based alloy powder prepared by a plasma arc discharge process with changing process parameters. The chemical composition of synthesized powder was strongly influenced by the process parameters, especially the hydrogen volume fraction in the powder synthesis atmosphere. The synthesized powder had an average particle size of 50 nm. The synthesized Zr-V-Fe based particles had a shell-core structure composed of metal in the core and oxidse in the shell.

  • The thermal spray coating process is being used to protect the metals and alloys from wear, abrasion, fatigue, tribology, and corrosion failure. Therefore, in the present study, Al and Zn was deposited by plasma arc thermal spray process onto the steel substrate and their performance was assessed. The bond adhesion result shows that Al coating has higher value attributed to compact, dense, and less porous compared to Zn coating which contain defects/pores and uneven morphology assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical results show that the Al coating exhibited higher impedance value compared to Zn in artificial ocean water solution at prolonged exposure periods. However, both coatings show the increment in polarization resistance with exposure periods which reveal that porosity of coatings is filled by the corrosion products.

  • Various types of plasma source applied in $CH_4$ decomposition process are compared. DBD by pulse and AC power, spark by pulse and AC power, rotating arc and hollow cathode plasma are chosen to be compared. The results show that $CH_4$ conversion per given unit power is relatively high in hollow cathode plasma and rotating arc that induces rather high temperature condition and that is why both thermal dehydration and plasma induced decomposition contribute for the overall process. In case of DBD wherein high temperature electron and low temperature gas molecule coexist, the process shows low conversion rate, for in rather low temperature condition the contribution of thermal dehydration is lowered. Selectivity of $C_2H_6$ and $C_2H_2$ is shown to be a good parameter of the relative contribution of plasma chemistry in the overall process. From the results we concluded that required condition of plasma source for a cost effective and high yield $CH_4$ decomposition is to have characteristics of both thermal plasma and non thermal plasma in which temperature is high above a certain threshold state for thermal dehydration and electron induced collision is maximized in the same breath.

  • In this paper, I-butt welding with 6mm thickness using Plasma-GMA welding was carried out. And weld characteristics of the Al-5083 aluminium alloy for Plasma-GMA hybrid welding was evaluated. The orthogonal experimental design was used to investigate the influence of plasma-MIG welding parameters such as plasma current, wire feeding rate, MIG-welding voltage and welding speed on the weld bead geometry and tensile strength using the ANOVA(Analysis of Variation). Then we conducted evaluation of contribution for process parameters. ANOVA results show that bead dimensions are affected by wire feeding speed, welding voltage and welding speed and tensile strength is mainly affected by welding speed and plasma arc current. Tensile strength was decreased by rise in plasma welding current because GMA welding current was decreased by plasma arc.

  • The influence on a stability of thermal plasma has been investigated in an electrode structure of non-transferred plasma torch. The variations of dynamic characteristic of the arc voltage was analyzed and compared in terms of voltage character and nozzle types for both the step-shaped nozzles and magnetic-approved cylindrical nozzle. From the experimental results, an electrode gap, flow rate of arc gas, and currents are considered as major operational parameters. As conclusion, it was assured that a torch with step-shaped nozzles of magnetic-approved type produce the stable plasma jet.

  • This paper discusses the characteristics about the ignition of D.C. main discharge is a plasma jet generator, manufactured for trial as non-transferred type, when the electrical energy appropriate to the ignition is supplied to the gap between the electrodes by using advance discharge of attenuating high frequency voltage generated by a high frequency oscillator with mercury spark gap. These characteristics are under the influences of (a) the length of mercury gap in high frequency oscillator and the quantity of hydrogen flow supplied to it, (b) the condenser capacity of the high frequency oscillator circuit, (c) the length of plasma jet torch in D.C. main discharge circuit and the quantity of argon flow supplied to it, (d) the circuit constants of D.C. main discharge circuit. The results for these characteristics, obtained by this research, are considered to be helpful to the designs for the ignition of a plasma jet as well as the welding arc stabilizer by high frequency discharge and the high frequency arc welder.

  • The high-voltage circuit breaker plays an important role in the electrical system because there has been a need for suitable switching devices capable of initiating and interrupting the flow of the electric fault current. It continues as the contacts recede from each other and as the newly created gap is bridged by a plasma. The arc plasma happens inside the insulation nozzle of SF6 self-blast interrupter which is newly developed as the next-generation switching principle. The ablation of PTFE nozzle is caused by this high temperature medium, the PTFE vapor from the nozzle surfaces flows toward the outlets and the pressure chamber. The vapor makes the pressure of the chamber increased by heat and mass transfer from the arcing zone. Because the rate of ablation depends on the magnitude of applied current, it decreases when the current goes to zero. The compressed gas inside the chamber flows reversely toward the arc plasma during this moment. According to this principle, the arc can be cooled down and the fault current can be interrupted successfully. In this study, we calculate arc plasmas and thermal-flow characteristics caused by fault current interruption inside a SF6 self-blast interrupter, and to investigate the effect of PTFE ablation on the whole arcing history.
