  • Welding deformation during the assembly process is affected by not only local shrinkage due to rapid heating and cooling, but also root gap and misalignment between parts to be welded. Therefore, the prediction and control of welding deformation have become of critical importance. In this study, it was focused on the development of the 3-axis apparatus for real-time measurement of the welded deformation. To achieve the objective, a D-H algorithm has been carried out to check the behavioral and performance evaluation for the developed robot. The sequence experiments were taken the base materials of $400{\times}200{\times}4.5mm$ plate for butt welding. The real-time experimental measurements are in good agreement with the measured results.

  • The Nd:YAG laser process is known to have high speed and deep penetration capability to become one of the most advanced welding technologies. This paper describes the machining characteristics of SM45C carbon steel welding by use of an Nd:YAG laser. In spite of its good mechanical characteristics, SM45C carbon steel has a high carbon contents and suffers a limitation in the industrial application due to the poor welding properties. The major process parameters studied in the present laser welding experiment were position of focus, travel speed and laser power. Optical microscope and SEM were used to investigate the microstructures of the welded zone. The experimental results showed that penetration depth of the welding process increases with laser power. Both the microstructural investigation and the theoretical calculations indicated that materials undergoes a very high heating and cooling cycle during welding process. It was also found that the austenite nucleation takes place at the initial stage and the completion temperature of austenite transformation is much higher than in the case of the arc welding.

  • Welding process generates distortion and residual stress in the weldment due to rapid heating and cooling. Welding distortion and residual stress in the welded structure result in many troubles such as dimensional inaccuracies in assembling and safety problem during service. The accurate prediction of welding residual stress is thus very important to improve the quality of weldment and find the way to reduce itself. This paper suggests new analysis method to predict welding residual stress by considering solid phase transformation during welding process. Using the method, analysis is performed for medium and low carbon steel. The analysis result for medium carbon steel reveals that case considering phase transformation has compressive residual stress in contrast with the case neglecting phase transformation because of martensite formation. However, for the case of low carbon steel, residual stress shows little difference between the case considering phase transformation and the other case, because it has small transformation strain and recovers rapidly stress after phase transformation.

  • $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ (x = 0, 0.4, 0.7, 1) alloys were prepared by arc-melting, followed by heat treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to measure and investigate the phase structure and magnetic properties. The temperature dependent magnetization curves indicate that the phase transitions between LTP and HTP MnBi occur with heating or cooling in $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ ($x{\leq}0.7$) samples. However, MnTi samples are in $Mn_2Ti$ single-phase, with very low magnetic properties. Furthermore, the coercivity exhibits a positive temperature coefficient. The results show that the optimal content of Ti for the coercivity of $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ alloy is x = 0.4. For MnBi sample, the coercivity reaches a maximum value of 1.13 T at 550 K. However, the remanence and energy product show apparent decrease with the addition of Ti in $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ alloys.

  • Plunger (piston rod) materials are used in high-pressure condition. So STD11 is the essential material to build this plunger. However, it costs more to make a plunger by using only STD11 than using the welding of STD11 to SCM440 and other dissimilar material. And it has been difficult to weld this sort of dissimilar materials. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional arc welding. And also they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing. But, by the friction welding technique, it will be able to be made without such problems. And then, on account of such reasons, we need a new approach of study on real-time quality evaluation by acoustic emission (AE) techniques as well as a domestic development of the plunger by friction welding. So that, the purpose of this study for such developments is the development of a plunger by optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability. Then, this study aimed not only to develop the optimization of friction welding of dissimilar plunger steels of STD11 to SCM440, but also to develop the application technique of the acoustic emission to accomplish an in-process real-time quality evaluation during friction welding of the plunger materials by the AE technique.

  • In constructing all kinds of equipment and steel structure, parts with discontinuities such as weld defects formed in the welded structure can generate fatigue cracks that results in damage or accidents. In this study, weld zones are investigated with X-rays and the latent images are put on film. Weld zone defects can be verified by developing the film. As weld defects are investigated by radiographic testing and correlated with the welding condition, more appropriate welding conditions can be found. According to the result of X-ray radiographic inspection of butt welding ATOS 80 high-strength steel with a thickness of 12mm, the best conditions for welding without creating weld defects are 4 weld-passes, a protective gas of 20% $CO_2$ and 80% Ar, a protective gas flow of 20L/min, a welding current of 200A, an arc voltage of 24V, a welding speed of 14.4cm/min, a welding rod angle of $50^{\circ}$, a welding gap of 5 mm with a ceramic base, and sand pre-heating to $160^{\circ}$ Celsius prior to welding.

  • In general, spot welding is used at no welding rod or flux for the process, low welding point temperature compared to arc welding, short heating time, less damage to the parent material, and low deformation and residual stress, relatively. Also, because of the pressurization effect, better mechanical qualities of the welding parts are obtained. Therefore, in various fields of industry its rapid operation speed can make mass production possible such as motor industry. In FEM analysis for the spot welding process, it is effective to use simple modeling rather than complicated one because of its numerous number of spots and reduction of analysis time. Therefore, this study provides with not only simplification of modeling analysis by using beam component composition of structure without re-compositing the spot welding point mesh but also modeling analysis of which property of fracture strength is reflected. In addition complete spot welding model is examined at rectangular post shape (hat shape) by impact test, compared the results, and verified its validity. As a result, it is possible to optimize the welding position and to recognize the strength of structure and the proposed equal distance model shows the effect of welding point reduction and improvement of stiffness.

  • The paper analyzes a scheme of decontamination of radionuclides from concrete structures, in which rapid microwave heating is used to spall off a thin contaminated surface layer. The analysis is split in two parts: (1) The hygrothermal part of the problem, which consists in calculating the evolution of the temperature and pore pressure fields, and (2) the fracturing part, which consists in predicting the stresses, deformations and fracturing. The rate of the distributed source of heat due to microwaves in concrete is calculated on the basis of the standing wave normally incident to the concrete wall with averaging over both the time period and the wavelength because of the very short time period of microwaves compared to the period of temperature waves and the heterogeneity of concrete. The reinforcing bars parallel to the surface arc treated as a smeared steel layer. The microplane model M4 is used as the constitutive model for nonlinear deformation and distributed fracturing of concrete. The aim of this study is to determine the required microwave power and predict whether and when the contaminated surface layer of concrete spalls off. The effects of wall thickness, reinforcing bars, microwave frequencies and power are studied numerically. As a byproduct of this analysis, the mechanism of spalling of rapidly heated concrete is clarified.
