  • Aquifer recharge and recovery is a technology used to ensure a stable supply of clean water. During the process, river water is injected into a soil aquifer and stored. The stored water is then recovered and used to produce drinking water. It is important to understand quality improvement of the injected water while it is stored in the aquifer. In the present study, a lab-scale column reactor containing saturated-zone soil was employed to mimic an aquifer. The reactor was used to investigate microbial removal of nitrate that is a major inorganic contaminant detected in the Nakdong River. The reactor was introduced with river water that contained nitrate at concentrations (5.07, 6.81, 8.27, and 11.07 mg $NO_3{^-}/l$) detected downstream of the Nakdong River in the past 2 years. The nitrate concentrations decreased during the introduced water is retained in the reactor. Effluent from the reactor contained 1.49 mg $NO_3{^-}/l$ or less and had an average pH of 7.98 regardless of the nitrate concentrations of the influent. However abiotic control reactor showed similar nitrate-concentrations in its influent and effluent. Considering the result of abiotic control, the decreased nitrate concentration observed in the test column suggested that microorganisms in saturated-zone soil removed nitrate in the river water introduced into the reactor. Results of this study will be used to better understand microbial improvement of water quality in aquifer recharge and recovery technology.

  • Aquifer storage transfer and recovery (ASTR) is a type of managed aquifer recharge which entails injecting water into a storage well and recovering it from a different well. It has effects of natural purification when injected water passes through aquifer medium, and can be a good way of supplying water especially in a region with poor surface water quality. This study is about an on-going effort to introduce ASTR as a solution to source water problems in coastal areas. A pilot study is being conducted in the delta of the Nakdong River. A proactive management system is incorporated to ensure the water qulity in the process of drinking water process. The system is based on the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) which is a tool originated from the food industry in order to assess hazards and establish control systems for the safety of food product. In this paper, we analyze hazardous events which can occur in the entire water supply system using ASTR as a first step to the incorporation of HACCP to drinking water production process.

  • Supplying clean and safe water to people is facing both quantitative and qualitative challenges. Due to climate change, access to freshwater becomes increasingly difficult, while pollution from various sources decreases the public trust in water quality. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) which stores and uses surface water in aquifer is receiving attention as a new technology to secure freshwater. Recently, there is a global expansion in the attempt to combine general purification plants and hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) which manages all the process from raw material to consumer for food safety. This research is about an attempt to apply HACCP to the drinking water supply process using MAR to secure both quantity and quality of drinking water. The study site is a MAR plant being constructed in the downstream area of the Nakdong River Basin, South Korea. The incorporation of HACCP with MAR-based water supply system is expected to enhance the safety and reliability of drinking water.

  • Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) in the form of Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) systems are being applied for numerous water augmentation projects both in developed and developing countries. Given the onset of Climate Change and its influence on weather patterns and land use, it has been acknowledged the utilization of this technology will be ever increasing. This technique like all others does have its drawbacks or disadvantages, whereby to overcome these drawbacks or disadvantages it is recommended that logical planning process be followed. In this study, we developed a decision framework known as "Decision framework for the planning, designing, construction/testing and implementation of subsurface water storage system" to further standardize the planning and design process of subsurface water storage system to increase the probability of having a successful ASR/ASTR project. The formulation of this framework was based on earlier frameworks, guidelines, published papers and technical reports which were compiled into a data collection database. The database of which consider both qualitative and quantitative aspect for example recharge objectives, site location, water chemistry of the native, source and recovered water, aquifer characteristics(hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity, porosity), injection/pumping rate, ecological constraints, societal restrictions, regulatory restrictions etc. The assimilation of these factors into a singular framework will benefit the broad spectrum of stakeholder as it maps the chronological order under which ASR project should be undertaken highlighting at each stage the feasibility of the project. The final stage of which should result in fully operational ASR system. The framework was applied to two case studies and through the application of a modified ASR site selection suitability index (Brown et al., 2005) a score was derived to identify the performance of each site. A high score of which meant a maximize chance of success given the reduce presence of project constraints.

  • A water-source heat pump system has been developed for cooling and heating of a green house on the waterfront in Jinju. In order to supply a heat source/sink of water in alluvium aquifer to the heat pump system, the riverbank filtration facility (two pumping wells and one recharge well) for water intake and injection has been constructed. To pump and recharge water sufficiently, the geometric design such as depth and diameter for the wells have been completed, and details of the well such as slot size and length of the screen and filter pack size have been designed based on the practical and theoretical design method including D30 technique. For the investigation of the hydrogeological characteristics, step-drawdown test, long-term pumping test, and recovery test have been carried out for two developed pumping wells. Step-drawdown test has been performed on 4 step flowrates of 150, 300, 450, $600m^3$/day for 1 hour, and long-term pumping test on flowrate of $500m^3$/day for 24 hours, and recovery test for 6 hours. Since the underground water filtrated by riverbank is flowing smoothly into the well, the water level goes down slightly for the long-term test. Consequently, the stable pumping flowrate for two pumping well has been predicted at least over $1,647m^3$/day which is larger than the flowrate of $1,000m^3$/day for a 60 RT heat pump system.

  • Bucheon city has been rapidly urbanized and steadily enlarged. Also, the city depends on groundwater as an alternative water resource. The objective of this study is to characterize the hydrogeology in this city including the recharge of groundwater and hydraulic property of an aquifer in order to investigate the chemical characteristics and contamination of groundwater in the Bucheon area. Eleven groundwater wells in the Bucheon area were selected for applying certain hydraulic tests, such as pumping and recovery tests. Theis method and Theis recovery method were used to obtain hydraulic parameters, such as hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity by applying recovery tests. The playground of school and uncovered areas layed a major function of recharging areas. The groundwater well in these areas showed high recharge, transmissivity, and hydraulic conductivity. In a downtown area, groundwaier wells showed low pumping capacity and hydraulic parameters. Groundwater samples were collected from 48 different locations in the Bucheon area and that showed very various chemical composition in groundwater Their electrical conductivity showed various ranges from 70.4 to $1,287{\mu}S/cm$. The composition more significantly affected the groundwater due to the land use and urbanization than that of the aquifer rock type.

  • A FORTRAN program was developed to determine the optimal locations of multiple recharge wells in an aquifer with different arrangements of pumping wells. The simulated annealing algorithm was used to find optimal locations of two recharge wells which satisfied three objective functions. The model results show that locating two injection wells inside the cluster of pumping wells is efficient if the recovery rate only was taken into account. In contrast, placing injection wells to the side of the cluster is desirable if the simulation considers aggregate objective function. Therefore, installing an injection well on each side of the cluster seems to yield the maximum recovery rates for the existing pumping wells, and it yields similar increases in pumping rate for all wells in the cluster. The locations of recharge wells can be arranged in numerous configurations, because there are multiple near-optimal local minima or maxima. These results indicate that the simulated annealing can yield effective evaluations of the optimal locations of multiple recharge wells. In addition, the suggested aggregate objective function can be utilized as an appropriate multi-objective optimization.

  • 314 pumping test data of the National Groundwater Monitoring Wells (NGMWs) are analyzed to present statistical properties of fractured-rock and alluvial aquifers of Korea such as distribution of hydraulic conductivity, empirical relations between transmissivity and specific capacity, and time-drawdown patterns of pumping and recovery test. The mean hydraulic conductivity of alluvial aquifers (1.26 m/day) is 17 times greater than that of fractured-rock aquifers (0.076 m/day). Hydraulic conductivity of fracture-rock aquifers ranges in value over 4 orders of magnitude which coincide with representative values of fractured crystalline rocks and shows distinctive differences among rock types with the lowest values for metamorphic rocks and the highest values for sedimentary rocks. In consideration of the estimated transmissivity with some simplifying assumptions, it Is likely that $32\%$ of groundwater flow for NGMWs would occur through fractured-rock aquifers and $68\%$ through alluvial aquifers. Based on 314 pairs of data, empirical relations between transmissivity and specific capacity are presented for both fractured-rock and alluvial aquifers. Depending on time-drawdown patterns during pumping and recovery test, NGMWs are classified into $4\~5$ types. Most of NCMWs $(83.7\%)$ exhibit the recharge boundary type, which call be attributed to sources of water supply such as streams adjacent to the pumping well, the vertical groundwater flux between fractured-rock and the alluvial aquifers, and the delayed yield associated with gravity drainage occurring in unconfined aquifers.

  • In Korea, rural groundwater development faces new challenge, which have not been experienced so far. The problem is a groundwater depletion by the water curtain cultivation (WCC) during winter season. This study investigates the groundwater depletion using three-dimensional finite difference groundwater flow program, MODFLOW to verify the water budget of the shallow aquifer of Cheongweon area. Interdisciplinary research, which has become a worldwide trend, has been adopted in studying groundwater modeling in field scale. In particular, the method of groundwater recharge estimation adopted precise modeling techniques, SWAT to groundwater flow modeling. Based on qualified field data, the model calibrated and validated its reliability. The objective of this study is to simulate various stream-aquifer interactions according to groundwater pumping with artificial boundaries, such as weirs and drainage system. We also analyzed a seasonal variation of cumulative water budget of the site to quantify the groundwater depletion and recovery in the pumping field.

  • 지하수 인공함양은 수자원확보 및 비상시 용수를 목적으로 세계적으로 연구 및 프로젝트가 진행되고 있다. 인공함양의 방법에는 여러 가지의 방식이 있지만 본 연구는 관정을 통해 주입하는 ASTR(Aquifer Storage Transfer and Recovery)방법을 이용하여 연구하였다.
