  • In the present paper, a new method is proposed for the measurement of the ice packing factor (IPF) of an ice slurry using the index of refraction. The purpose of the new method is to improve the resolution of the measurement and to increase its resistance to electric noise as compared to the standard IPF measurement technique that relies on measurement of the freezing temperature. These two methods are similar in that they both obtain a concentration of aqueous solution from measured physical quantities and calculate the IPF using a relation between concentration and IPF. We experimented and compared the two methods, whose results were also compared with results from the calorimeter method obtaining the IPF directly They are in good agreement (within $5\%$), which demonstrates the validity of the newly proposed method.

  • This article describes the change in the hand value of chitosan-crosslinked cotton fabrics. The chitosan-crosslinked cotton fabrics were manufactured by mercerizing process using epichlorohydrin(ECH), 2% aqueous acetic acid and 20% aqueous sodium hydroxide. It proposed that the crosslinking and mercerizing were performed with the mixture of four different molecular weight chitosan and ECH in a single step. Cotton fabrics were dipped in the mixed solution of chitosan and ECH, picked up by mangle roller, pre-dried at $130^{\circ}C$, mercerized and crosslinked in NaOH solution and finally washed and dried. Mechanical and physical properties of the chitosan crosslinked fabric were measured on concentration and molecular weight by Kawabata Evaluation System(KES) and other instruments. As the concentration of chitosan solution increased, LT, WT, B, 2HB were increased. WT, B, 2HB, MIU, SMD, $T_0$, $T_m$ were decreased when chitosan was depolymerized. On the other hand, RT was increased when chitosan was depolymerized.

  • Activated carbon was prepared from pre-carbonized petroleum coke. Textural properties were determined from studies of the adsorption of nitrogen at 77 K and the surface chemistry was obtained using the Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer technique and the Boehm titration process. The adsorption of three aromatic compounds, namely phenol (P), p-nitrophenol (PNP) and benzoic acid (BA) onto APC in aqueous solution was studied in a batch system with respect to contact time, pH, initial concentration of solutes and temperature. Active carbon APC obtained was found to possess a high surface area and a predominantly microporous structure; it also had an acidic surface character. The experimental data fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well; also, the intraparticle diffusion was the only controlling process in determining the adsorption of the three pollutants investigated. The adsorption data fit well with the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The uptake of the three pollutants was found to be strongly dependent on the pH value and the temperature of the solution. Most of the experiments were conducted at pH 7; the $pH_{(PZC)}$ of the active carbon under study was 5.0; the surface of the active carbon was negatively charged. The thermodynamic parameters evaluated for APC revealed that the adsorption of P was spontaneous and exothermic in nature, while PNP and BA showed no-spontaneity of the adsorption process and that process was endothermic in nature.

  • The spectral changes of 3,3'-diethyl oxacarbocyanine(DOC) in the aqueous solution and in the presence of polyacrylic acid(PAA) were studied by means of absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The spectral change of DOC in the aqueous solution with concentration changes is attributed to the formation of dimer. In the presence of PAA, the characteristic changes of metachromatic band with changes of P/D (the ratio between available binding site and the dye concentration) are found and the discussions are made in terms of stacking theory. A kinetic study of the interaction between DOC and PAA was also investigated by the absorption and fluorescence stopped-flow spectroscopy. The observed relaxation effect in PAA-DOC system can be described quantitatively by assuming two relaxation processes occur.

  • Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the vapor-liquid system. In the present work, the absorption process of water vapor by an aqueous soluton of LiBr flowing inside of the vertical tube was investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. The model could predict the film thickness, the pressure gradient, and the heat and mass transfer rate. Particularly the effects of vapor flow conditions on the absorption process were investigated in terms of the vapor Reynolds number. As the vapor Reynolds number increased, the shear stress at the vapor-solution interface also increased. Consequently solution film became thinner at higher vapor flowrate under the co-currentflow condition. Thinner film was capable of higher heat transfer to the wall and leaded to higher absorption rate of the water vapor into the solution film.

  • Electrochemical ion exchange method is expected to be one of the most acceptable techniques for the separation of radioactive cations from nuclear wastewater. In this study a thin film of hexacyanoferrate on nickel surface was derivatized chemically in an aqueous potassium-ferricyanide solution. Electrochemical redox behavior of the nickel hexacyanoferrate(NiHCNFe) film electrode was investigated with the use of cyclic voltammetry potentiostated from -100 to 800 mV versus SCE. The electro-reduction characteristics of the NiHCNFe film were examined in the cobalt solutions. The NiHCNFe ion exchanger was more useful at lower concentration, lower temperature, and pH7 of the cobalt solution. The capacity loss of NiHCNFe was 0.018%/cycle that was less than the average loss of 2~3%/cycle of the convective organic exchanger. The 45~55% of the initial cobalt ions was electro-deposited on the NiHCNFe by using continuous recirculating reactor system. As a result, it was found that the electroactive NiHCNFe films showed better performance than the organic resins for the separation of cobalt ion from the aqueous solutions.

  • This paper investigated that the functional group and chemical structure of additives affect ice adhesion in aqueous solutions cooling with stirring. In order to compare the effect on the ice adhesion in aqueous solutions, the functional group like carboxyl (-COOH), hydroxyl(-OH) or amine($-NH_{2}$) one were compared each other. Among the functional group, the strength of the hydrogen bonding force order is amine, hydroxyl and carboxyl one. It supports that ethylene diamine 7 mass% solution including amine group was effective to suppress the ice adhesion, though it is corrosive. Also, the ice adhesion were effectively resisted and formed lots of ice slurries in cooling experiment of 7 mass% solution of 1, 2-and 1, 3-propanediol which is different molecular structure but equal molecular weight each other.

  • Fluidic conditions for the separation of phases were surveyed in a microfluidic aqueous two-phase extraction system. The infusion ratio between polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran solution defines the concentrations of each polymer in micro-channel, which determine the phase-separation. The appropriate ratio between PEG (M.W. 8000, 10%, w/v) and dextran T500 (M.W. 500000, 5%, w/v) in order to perform the separation of phases of both polymers was observed as changing the mixed ratio of both polymers. Based on the fluidic conditions, stable two-phase solutions were obtained within 4% to 8% and 3% to 1% of PEG and dextran, respectively. In addition, the characteristics of the two-phase were discussed. The separation technique studied in the paper can be applied for the implementation of a lab-on-a chip which can detect various biological entities such cells, bacterium, and virus in an integrated manner using built in a biosensor inside the chip.

  • The effect of organic processing parameters on the dispersion stability of the BaTiO$_3$-based dielectric particles and borosilicate glass particulate suspensions was investigated in a system where organic solvents, dispersant, binder and modifier were used as processing additives in a low temperature cofired ceramic fabrication processes. Two- and three-component organic solvents were used to disperse ceramic particles and it was found the better stability in the particulate suspension prepared in a bi-solvent, which was consists of toluene and ethanol in a non-azeotropic composition. The addition amount of organic additives had a great impact on dispersion in the present investigation. The flow curves of the suspensions prepared with binder and modifier were fitted according to the power-law equation, which indicates that the internal structure of the suspension could be disturbed under the applied shear stress. Finally, the LTCC green tapes were successfully tape-cast based upon the optimum formulation of LTCC suspension and its microstructure was compared with that of the hard-agglomerates.

  • We report a highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform for the selective trace analysis of mercury (II) ions in drinkable water using aptamer-conjugated silver nanoparticles. Here, an aptamer designed to specifically bind to $Hg^{2+}$ ions in aqueous solution was labelled with a TAMRA moiety at the 5' end and used as a Raman reporter. Polyamine spermine tetrahydrochloride (spermine) was used to promote surface adsorption of the aptamer probes onto the silver nanoparticles. When $Hg^{2+}$ ions are added to the system, binding of $Hg^{2+}$ with T-T pairs results in a conformational rearrangement of the aptamer to form a hairpin structure. As a result of the reduced of electrostatic repulsion between silver nanoparticles, aggregation of silver nanoparticles occurs, and the SERS signal is significantly increased upon the addition of $Hg^{2+}$ ions. Under optimized assay conditions, the concentration limit of detection was estimated to be 5 nM, and this satisfies a limit of detection below the EPA defined limit of 10 nM in drinkable water.
