  • This work investigated the decomposition of aqueous anatoxin-a originated from cyanobacteria using an underwater dielectric barrier discharge plasma system based on a porous ceramic tube and an alternating current (AC) high voltage. Plasmatic gas generated inside the porous ceramic tube was uniformly dispersed in the form of numerous bubbles into the aqueous solution through the micro-pores of the ceramic tube, which allowed an effective contact between the plasmatic gas and the aqueous anatoxin-a solution. Effect of applied voltage, treatment time and the coexistence of nutrients such as $NO_3{^-}$, $H_2PO_4{^-}$ and glucose on the decomposition of anatoxin-a was examined. Chemical analyses of the plasma-treated anatoxin-a solution using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and ion chromatography (IC) were performed to elucidate the mineralization mechanisms. Increasing the voltage improved the anatoxin-a decomposition efficiency due to the increased discharge power, but the energy required to remove a given amount of anatoxin-a was similar, regardless of the voltage. At an applied voltage of 17.2 kV (oxygen flow rate: $1.0L\;min^{-1}$), anatoxin-a at an initial concentration of $1mg\;L^{-1}$ (volume: 0.5 L) was successfully treated within 3 min. The chemical analyses using LC-MS and IC suggested that the intermediates with molecular weights of 123~161 produced by the attack of plasma-induced reactive species on anatoxin-a molecule were further oxidized to stable compounds such as acetic acid, formic acid and oxalic acid.

  • The instability of hirsutenone (HST), a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) and ovarian carcinoma, is one of the main concerns for the development of drug product. In the present study, aqueous stability of HST was investigated by kinetic analysis, and the effect of several factors covering temperature, nitrogen gas ($N_2$) flushing, and selection of proper antioxidant was compared. Cosolvent system composed of distilled water and methanol (9:1 v/v) was used as a vehicle to dissolve HST at the concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$. Samples of aqueous solution were prepared under the absence or presence of antioxidants, such as ascorbic acid (AA), sodium edetate (EDTA), and ascorbyl palmitate (AP), and subjected for stability test. The degradation of HST in aqueous solution was followed by the first order kinetics with an extremely short half life of less than a week at room temperature, and was accelerated as the temperature increased. $N_2$ flushing brought a little enhancement in stability compared to control solution, but the effect was insufficient. The addition of AA and EDTA (0.1%) significantly enhanced the stability of HST at $40^{\circ}C$, but the addition of AP (0.01%) was limited due to its water insolubility and revealed no promising result. The stability of HST was increased proportionally by the amount of AA added, showing the difference in degree of stabilization as an order of magnitude. Finally, we conclude that HST was stabilized by the addition of a suitable antioxidant, suggesting AA as the most effective stabilizer.

  • This study investigated the antioxidative action of Corni Fructus aqueous extract on kidneys of diabetic mice. The electron donating abilities of Corni Fructus aqueous extract and its antioxidant activities (XO, SOD, CAT, GST, eNOS) in kidneys of C57BL/6 or db/db mice were evaluated. For in vivo study, seven week-old male mice were divided into normal control group (NC, C57BL/6 mice), diabetic control group (DC, db/db mice) and Corni Fructus (500 mg/kg/day for 8 weeks) treated diabetic group (DCF, db/db mice). The electron donating abilities of Corni Fructus aqueous extract exhibited 7%, 24.4%, and 42.7% at concentrations of 100, 500, and $1000\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The activity of XO in the DCF group was significantly lower than the DC group by 35% (p < 0.05). The SOD activity was significantly higher in the DCF group than the DC group by 26% (p < 0.05). The activities of CAT and GST were lowered in the DCF group than the DC group by 26% (p < 0.05) and 7.6%, respectively. The mRNA expression of eNOS in kidneys was lower in the DCF group than the DC group by 24%. These results indicate that Corni Fructus reduced oxidation stress as evidenced by the restoration of the enzymatic antioxidative defense system in renal tissues of db/db mice. It is suggested that these antioxidative actions of Corni Fructus on renal tissues in db/db mice could contribute to its renoprotective effects on diabetic nephropathy.

  • Antioxidative activity of browning product(BP) fractionated from fermented soybean sauce(SS) was studied during the oxidation process of linoleic acid mixture system. SSBP was a powder type product prepared from fermented soybean sauce by the fractionation through the Sephadex G-10 column and freeze drying of collected fraction. The aqueous model systems were used for the evaluation of antioxidative activity of SSBP during the oxidative reaction at $50^{\circ}C$ by the determination of peroxider and conjugated dienoic acid compounds. The linoleic acid mixture for the aqueous model systems was consisted of linoleic acid(64.6%), oleic acid(27.4%), and other acids in ethanolic phosphate buffer solution(pH 7.0). SSBP had a considerable antioxidative activity with the inhibition of formation of peroxides and conjugated dienoic acids during the autoxidation of linoleic acid mixtures in aqueous model systems. Antioxidative activity of SSBP was relatively higher than SS, however, lower than ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ and butylated hydroxyanisol. The antioxidative effect of SSBP was increased by the its concentrations from 0.05% to 0.5% in the oxidation reactions of aqueous model systems. Therefore, SSBP was considered as one of the potential natural antioxidants for the use of food products.

  • Percutaneous absorption and model membrane variations of melationin (MT) in aqueous-based propylene glycol and $2-hydroxypropyl-{\beta}-cyclodextrin $vehicles were investigatted. the excised hairless mouse skin (HMS) and two synthetic ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and microporous polyethylene (MPE) were selected as a model membrane. the solubility of MT was determined by phase equilibrium study. the vertical $Franz{\circledR}$ type cell was used for diffusion study. The concentration of MT was determined using reverse phse HPLC system. The MT solubility was the highest in a mixture of PG and $2-HP{\beta}CD$. The percutaneous absorption of MT through excised HMS increased as the solubility increased. However, the permeability coefficient decreased and then slightly increased in mixture of PG and $2-HP{\beta}CD$. On the other hand, both flux and permeability coefficient through EVA membrane decreased as the solubility increased. No MT was detected over 12 h after starting diffusion through MPE membrane. The flux of MT was dependent on the type of membrane selected. Flux of MT was greatest in excised HMS followed by EBA and MPE membrane. Flux of MT through EVA membrane was 5-20 times lower when compared to excised HMS. Interestingly, volumes of donor phase when MPE membrane was used, significantly increased during the study period. the HMS might be applicable to expect plasma concentration of MT in human subjects based on flux and pharmacokinetic parameters as studied previously. the current studies may be applied to deliver MT transdermally using aqueous-based vehicles and to fabricate MT dosage forms.

  • Asymmetric PVDF membranes were prepared by the phase inversion from casting solutions containing PVDF, NMP as solvent and 1,4-dioxane, DGDE, acetone, or GBL as additives by immersing them in water. The effects of various additives on the casting solution properties, permeation properties, and membrane structures were investigated. Low miscibility of 1,4-dioxane, DGDE and acetone with the coagulant (water) compared with NMP resulted in reducing the membrane pore size. When DGDE is used as an additive, the pore size was reduced because of its incipient sharp interface formation in the water. GBL increased membrane pore size because of its polarity compared to that of NMP. The PVDF membranes with various pore sizes could be obtained by controlling the amount of additive. The effect of mixed solvent (aqueous and non-aqueous solution) on permeation through membrane was investigated. Not only solution viscosity but surface tension affected solvent permeation.

  • Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate oxidation system using ozone and hydrogen peroxide for treating water contaminated with phenol. We were able to greatly improve the oxidation efficiency of the aqueous phenol using hydrogen peroxide and ozone. Two methods were compared and analyzed in this study. In the consequence through the methods, we concluded that the $O_3/UV$ is superior to the hydrogen the results. The decomposition efficiency of aqueous phenol by $H_2O_2$. was exceeded at 83.3% in the concentration of phenol, 5, 15, 25 ppm, respectively. The rate of decomposition reaction by $H_2O_2$. was very slow. In the occasion of the fractional life, it was determined the value that $1.61{\times}10^{-5}(l/mol)^{1.172}sec^{-1}$, $3.75{\times}10^{-5}(l/mol)^{0.792}sec^{-1}$, $4.11{\times}10^{-5}(l/mol)^{1.782}sec^{-1}$. The rate of decomposition reaction of aqueous phenol by $O_3$ was fast compared to the $H_2O_2$. We concluded that the $O_3$ method is useful with the consideration of the reaction time 30 minutes. In the occasion of the fractional life, it was determined the value that $1.094{\times}10^{-4}(l/mol)^{0.933}sec^{-1}$, $2.1{\times}10^{-4}(l/mol)^{0.842}sec^{-1}$, $7.22{\times}10^{-4}(l/mol)^{1.332}sec^{-1}$.

  • Chemical equilibrium calculations for multicomponent aqueous systems involving the reductive dissolution of magnetite (Fe3O4) with oxalic acid (H2C2O4) were performed using the HSC Chemistry® version 9. They were conducted with an aqueous solution model based on the Pitzer's approach of one molality aqueous solution. The change in the amounts and activity coefficients of species and ions involved in the reactions as well as the solution pH at equilibrium was calculated while changing the amounts of raw materials (Fe3O4 and H2C2O4) and the system temperature from 25℃ to 125℃. In particular, the conditions under which Fe3O4 is completely dissolved at high temperatures were determined by varying the raw amount of H2C2O4 and the temperature for a given raw amount of Fe3O4 fed into the aqueous solution. When the raw amount of H2C2O4 added was small for a given raw amount of Fe3O4, no undissolved Fe3O4 was present in the solution and the pH of the solution increased significantly. The formation of ferrous oxalate complex (FeC2O4) was observed. The equilibrium amount of FeC2O4 decreased as the raw amount of H2C2O4 increased.

  • Background: The potential impact of aqueous extracts from Psidium guajava leaves on the reproductive system of female rabbits was evaluated. Methods: Twenty-eight rabbits, aged five to six months were utilized. Rabbits were divided into four groups and were randomly assigned to receive one of the following oral doses of the guava leaf extracts: 0 (control group), 10, 20, or 30 mg/kg of body weight. After a treatment period of 30 days, blood was collected via jugular venipunture and the serum was extracted for the assessment of serum biochemical traits levels. The females were bred and monitored throughout their pregnancy to ascertain reproductive outcomes. Results: The results indicated that the guava leaf extract significantly increased the body weight of the rabbits during both pre- and post-pregnancy compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The litter size at three weeks post-birth, prolificity rate, FSH, LH, and protein levels were notably higher (p < 0.05) at a dose of 20 mg/kg of body weight. The viability rate three weeks post-birth increased with escalating extract doses, and the highest values were observed at doses of 20 and 30 mg/kg of body weight (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that, the aqueous extract of guava leaves appears to stimulate the production of FSH, LH and enhance body weight, prolificity, and pregnancy outcomes in mammals. As such, it is suggested that a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight could be beneficial in improving the reproductive performance of female.
