Fluorescent and colorimetric recognition properties of 2-(4-N-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone)-8-hydroxyquinoline (1) in buffered aqueous solution (1% DMSO, HEPES 20 mM, pH = 7.4) have been examined. Sensor 1 displays highly selective and sensitive recognition to $Cu^{2+}$ with fluorescence "ON-OFF" performance. The in situ formed 1-$Cu^{2+}$ complex exhibits an excellent selectivity toward sulfide ions with fluorescence "OFF-ON" behavior via $Cu^{2+}$ displacement approach. Thus, relay recognition of $Cu^{2+}$ and sulfide by a known molecule 1 has been achieved.
Synthesis of halicylindramide A mimetics via solid-phase peptide synthesis is described. The N-Me-Gly-Thr residues in halicyclindramide A has been replaced by N-Me-Gly-Dpr, Lys, or N-Me-Gly-allo-Thr. Solution structures of the mimetics were compared by CD spectroscopy in an aqueous buffer and in TFE.
A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of spiro[4H-pyran-oxindole] derivatives by means of three-component reactions between isatins, malononitrile or ethyl cyano-acetate, and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in the presence of catalytic amount of magnesium perchlorate in 50% aqueous ethanol medium has been described.
Objectives: The goal of this study was to investigate the anti-lipogenic effects of Samhwangsasim-tang(SHT), Daehwanghwangryunsasim-tang(DHT) aqueous extract on HepG2 cells with palmitate. Materials and Methods: HepG2 cells treated with palmitate were used in this study as hepatic steatosis model. Cells were treated with different concentrations of SHT, DHT aqueous extract for 24 hours. Cell viability and cytotoxicity were analyzed by MTT assay. Expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, Survivin, P21, TGF-${\beta}1$, LXR-${\alpha}$, ChREBP, ACC1, SCD1 mRNA were determined by Real-time PCR. Apoptosis of cells was detected by ELISA and FACS. Expression level of caspase-3 was studied by Western blot. Lipid accumulation was indicated by Oil Red O staining. Results: SHT, DHT aqueous extract had no cytotoxicity, but decreased palmitate-induced lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells. SHT aqueous extract suppressed fatty acid synthesis by inhibiting LXR-${\alpha}$, ChREBP, SCD1 activation and increasing TGF-${\beta}1$ expression level. DHT aqueous extract also suppressed fatty acid synthesis by decreasing ChREBP expression and increasing TGF-${\beta}1$ expression. Apoptosis of lipid accumulated cells was increased by enhanced activities of P21, caspase-3 and inhibited expressions of Bcl-2, Survivin. Conclusions: These results suggest that SHT and DHT have an anti-lipogenic effects on lipid accumulation of hepatic cell. Also SHT and DHT have an efficacy to increase apoptosis of adipocyte without cytotoxicity. Therefore, SHT and DHT might have potential clinical applications for treatment of hepatic steatosis.
The adsorption of inorganic mercury, Hg (II), in aqueous solution has been investigated to evaluate the effectiveness of synthesized gold (Au) nanoparticle-coated silica as sorbent in comparison with activated carbon and Au-coated sand. The synthesis of the Au-coated silica was confirmed by x-ray diffraction (Bragg reflections at $38.2^{\circ}$, $44.4^{\circ}$, $64.6^{\circ}$, and $77.5^{\circ}$) and the Au loading on silica surface was $6.91{\pm}1.14mg/g$. The synthesized Au-coated silica performed an average Hg adsorption efficiency of ~96 (${\pm}2.61$) % with KD value of 9.96 (${\pm}0.32$) L/g. The adsorption kinetics of Hg(II) on to Au-coated silica closely follows a pseudo-second order reaction where it is found out to have an initial adsorption rate of $4.73g/{\mu}g/min/$ and overall rate constant of $4.73{\times}10^{-4}g/{\mu}g/min/$. Au-coated silica particles are effective in removing Hg (II) in aqueous solutions due to their relatively high KD values, rapid adsorption rate, and high overall efficiency that can even decrease mercury levels below the recommended concentrations in drinking water.
The separation of zirconium and hafnium using tributyl phosphate (TBP)-Dodecane extractants in nitric acid medium was performed. Zirconium oxychloride, used as extraction feed, was obtained from the synthesis of Kalimantan zircon sand concentrate smelted using NaOH. The extraction process was carried out by dissolving chloride-based metals in nitric acid media in the presence of sodium nitrate using TBP-Dodecane as an extractant. Some of the extraction parameters carried out in this study include variations in organic phase and aqueous phase (O/A), variations in contact time, and variations in nitric acid concentration. Extraction was carried out using a mechanical shaker according to the parameter conditions. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was used for elemental (Zr and Hf) composition analysis of the aqueous solution. The results showed that zirconium was separated from hafnium at optimum conditions with an organic/aqueous ratio of 1:5, contact time of 75 min, and an HNO3 concentration of 7 M. The resulting separation factor of zirconium and hafnium using TBP-Dodecane was 14.4887.

A novel technology has been developed for the synthesis of thioglycolic acid (TGA)-capped CdSe quantum dots (QDs) in aqueous medium. The reaction was carried out in air atmosphere with one-pot by using $SeO_2$ to replace Se or $Na_2Se$. The technological parameters including refluxing time, pH values and molar ratios of selenium to cadmium had significant influence on the luminescence properties of CdSe QDs. Furthermore, the obtained QDs were characterized by fluorescent spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The results demonstrated that the CdSe QDs were of zinc-blended crystal structure in a sphere-like shape.
In this study, the dispersion stability of nano-sized CeO2 particles, synthesized by hydrothermal method in aqueous was evaluated from observing the surface potential behavior of CeO2 particle synthesized by solid state reaction. The isoelectric point(IEP) of nano-sized CeO2 synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis was found to be pH 9 contrary to the isoelectric point of micro-sized CeO2 synthesized by solid state reaction at pH 6.7. IEP was shifted to pH 2.0 as the addition of D-3019 from 0.1 to 1.0 wt%. The surface potential of CeO2 particles synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis was reduced as the addition of B-1001 used as a binder without change of IEP because the absorption of B-1001 polymer on the CeO2 particles shifted the shear plane of CeO2 particles outward away from the surface. This surface potential behavior was well correlated with the dispersion stability of slurry.
