Our aim was to compare the community structure of fish in the coast of Wando Island between 2001 and 2013. Using a gape net with wings, we collected 61 taxa, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. The sea temperature in the middle layer of the survey station in 2001 (after June) was obviously higher than that in 2013, which was < $20^{\circ}C$. Except for Thryssa kammalensis in 2013, the log transformed individuals of seven dominant species, selected using a SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analysis, decreased. Decreases in the individuals of Gobiidae spp., the warm-water species Trichiurus japonicus and Conger myriaster, and the migratory species Syngnathus schlegeli, Setipinna taty and Sardinella zunasi, which arrive in the southern coastal waters of Korea during summer-autumn, could be due to decreasing sea temperature in 2013. Thus, fish species diversity, estimated from rarefaction and k-dominance curves, declined in the coastal waters of Wando Island from 2001 to 2013, resulting in a significant difference in fish community structure.
This study was conducted to compare the quality among commercial boiled-dried anchovies caught by different methods. Regardless of catch methods, the moisture, salinity and acid-insoluble ash contents of commercial boiled-dried anchovies ranged from $23.2-25.2\%,\;6.8-7.4\%$. and $0.32-0.46\%$, respectively. By sensory evaluation, these anchovies were less than $5\%$ in break-age, whitish or yellowish in color and had a foul smell. Judging from the above results and Korean Standards (KS) for foods, these anchovies were classified into special grade. There was no difference in total amino acid content. While, in a major mineral content, boiled-dried anchovy caught by set net (BA-SN) was the highest, and those caught by lift net (BA-LN) and tow net (BA-TN) followed in order. The lipid oxidation progressed at the slowest rate in the BA-SN, and then no difference in the lipid oxidation was found between the BA-LN and BA-TN. Judging from the results of chemical analysis and sensory evaluation, the BA-TN was the worst quality among the commercial boiled-dried anchovies. No difference in quality was found between the BA-LN and the BA-SN.
Sea cucumbers have been an important part of human diets throughout history; demand is increasing every year, making the species a target for coastal resource development. New harvesting technologies have been developed in response to demand, including nursery production and insemination aquaculture, but such methods produce relatively few individuals and productivity per unit area is very small. For example, captures are prohibited during July and August due to the breeding season, and sea cucumbers aestivate during the hot season and hibernate during the cold season, all factors that limit natural-environment production in Korea. Problems with slow growth of sea cucumbers have been encountered in previous rearing experiments. To assess the importance of feeding ecology on sea cucumber growth, we conducted pond-bottom and lantern-net culture experiments. Results showed that sea cucumbers in bottom cultures grew from 3.06 to 102.59 g, but those in lantern cultures only grew from 25.60 to 28.03 g.
In order to study about species composition and community structure of fish in the coastal water off Boryeong were investigated from January 2018 to December 2019. A total of 10,863 individuals of 87 species of 44 families were collected. The dominant species were Liparis tanakai accounted for 19.8 percent of the total with Amblychaeturichthys hexanema and Collichthys niveatus accounted for 12.4 percent and 11.0 percent of the total number. A cluster analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity revealed that the fish community divided into two groups, According to season. The fish species that appeared summer and autumn were mainly migratory, while the fish species that appeared in spring and winter were mainly resident species. Fish caught by stow net had a high percentage of immature fish. It presented that coastal water off Boryeong is located an important spawning and nursery for fisheries resource.
Fishes were caught by a set net in the coastal waters off Yosu, Korea from April to October, 2001, and seasonal variation of abundance and species composition were studied. Fifty two species were identified as fish $(89\%)\;cephalopods\;(10\%)\;and\;crustaeans\;(1\%).$ Of the fishes Engraulis japonicus, Trachurus japonicus and Trichiurus lepturus were dominant species representing $64.1\%$ in total number of individuals. The number of species was high in spring and low in summer; number of individuals was high in spring and low in autumn. The diversity index (H') was 0.4-0.7 The abundance and species composition fluctuated seasonally. Occurrence of the various stages of fishes indicated that Scombia japonicus, T. japonicus and E japonicus utilized in the area as spawning ground, Conger myriaster larvae, Ammodytes personatus and Seriola quinqueradiata as nursery ground, and T. lepturus and Ilisha elongata as spawning and nursery grounds.
This paper presents a mathematical model and simulation method for investigating the performance of set net systems and fish cage systems influenced by currents and waves. Both systems consist of netting, mooring ropes, a floating collar and sinkers. The netting and ropes were considered flexible structures and the floating collar was considered an elastic structure. Both were modeled on a mass-spring model. The structures were divided into finite elements and mass points were placed at the mid-point of each element, and the mass points were connected by mass-less springs. Each mass point was subjected to external and internal forces and the total force was calculated at every integration step. An implicit integration scheme was used to solve the nonlinear dynamic system. The computation method was applied to dynamic simulation of actual systems simultaneously influenced by currents and waves in order to evaluate their practicality. The simulation results improved our understanding of the behavior of the structure and provided valuable information concerning the optimized design of set net and fish cage systems exposed to an open ocean environment.
We analyzed the small-scale purse-seine gear that is used along the North Coast of Java, Indonesia, using computer-aided tools to modify the gear. Data from the middle position of the leadline showed that the maximum depth reached by the net was 30 m. A similar result was also calculated. According to the calculated result, the mean sinking speed of the current gear at the middle position of the leadline was 0.13 m/s, and the maximum tension during pursing was 1,794 kgf. The best sinking performance was found in modified gear that used a 30.3 mm mesh knotless polyester net. The maximum depth reached by the net was 38 m, and mean sinking speed was 0.16 m/s at the middle position of the leadline. The maximum tension during pursing was 1,044 kgf. Independent sample t-test results show that the mean sinking depth and sinking speed in the simulated and measured results did not differ (P > 0.05). These results are expected to improve the efficiency and selectivity of small-scale purse seine gear.
Seasonal variation in species composition of fishes in the Sannam reservoir in Changwon, Korea was determined using samples collected by a three-sided fyke net in 2018. During the study period, we collected 2,181 individuals of 9 species, with a total weight of 111,552.2 g. The dominant species were Lepomis macrochirus, Carassius carassius, Erythroculter erythropterus, and Cyprinus carpio. These species accounted for 96.1% of the total number of individuals. The number of fish species, number of individuals, biomass and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of fish species occurred in May and August, the biomass of fishes was highest in May. Whereas the number of individuals was highest in February.
Fish catches by a set net from January 2007 to November 2009 were analyzed to assess fish species composition and seasonal variations in the coast of Gijang, Korea. Over 389 kg fish representing 78 species, 45 families and 17 orders were collected during three years of the study. Dominant species were jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus, anchovy Engraulis japonicus and herring Clupea palasii, and these three species comprised 67.3% of the total number of individuals and 60.7% of the total biomass. Size distribution of the dominant species for jack mackerel, anchovy and herring ranged from 2.2 cm to 22.6 cm, from 2.5 cm to 14.8 cm, from 4.0 cm to 29.0 cm in fork length, respectively. Anchovy was the only species that occurred throughout all seasons in the Gijang coast. Generally, species richness was highest in spring (April to June) when sea temperature began to increase.
Seasonal variation of the fishery resource in the shallow waters of Ganghwado tidal flat was investigated using monthly collected samples with a fence net from June 1998 to May 1999. Thirty-six species were found including 27 fish species, 6 crustaceans, and 3 molluscs. Of the fish, Konosirus punctatus, Sardinella zunasi Liza haematocheila and Synechogobius hasta dominated in the number of individuals $(92.1\%)$ and in biomass $(94.5\%).$ A few number of resident species, such as L. haematocheila and S. hasta, were collected only during the cold months. As the water temperature increased in the spring, the adult migratory fish such as K. punctatus and S. zunasi, were collected. In the summer, the juvenile fish recruited in the shallow water showing a peak in fish abundance. The data suggested that they grew until late autumn before moving to deeper waters for over-wintering. The principal component analysis showed that the seasonal variation in species composition was principally determined by water temperature and/or water temperature related factors. The species composition of the fish assemblage in the study area suggested that these species are highly adapted to extreme seasonal temperature variation and high water turbidity.
