Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) data from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDl) (1991-2001), mean heat fluxes were estimated at the Gunsan harbor Net heat flux was transported from the air to the sea surface during March to early September, and it amounts to $125\;Wm^{-2}$ in average daily during May to June. During the middle of September to February, the transfer of net heat flux was conversed from the sea surface to the air with $-125\;Wm^{-2}$ in mininum value in October. Short wave radiation was ranged from 50 to $248\;Wm^{-2}$ showing maxima in April to June. Long wave radiation was ranged from 25 to $92\;Wm^{-2}$ with mininum value in June to July. Sensible heat flux denoting negative values in April to August was ranged from -30 to $72\;Wm^{-2}.$ Latent heat flux was ranged from 15 to $82\;Wm^{-2}$ with maxima in August to September. The phase of heat exchange was changed from cooling to heating in the end of February, and from heating to cooling In the beginning of September. The advective term of heat flux showed minima in April to June and maxima in November. The ratio of temperature variations was 1.37 in the sea surface process and the horizontal process by advection. This indicates that the main factor in variation of temperature at Gunsan harbor is the heat exchange process through the sea surface from the air.
The behavior of crab, Charybdis japonica h. Milne EDWARDS, to the net pots with baits was investigated alternately in the experimental tanks. One of the pots being dropped on the tank bottom, the crabs touched it to obtain the bait probably reacted by their senses of smell and sight, and increased gradually in the number of touch to show a maximum within 30 min. The crabs, if touched circular pots, were guided more easily to the pot entrances than the case of touching square ones, but the guidance from the vicinity of the entrances into the pots was easier in the square. When the crabs entered the pots, they always showed a sharp precaution. However, most of enterings were made mainly within 30 minutes and easier in pots with lower entrances. If 30 min. elapsed, the entering was little made by the decrease in the number of touch and the getting-out was remarkable, especially in pots with low entrances. But, in all the pots the getting-out was hampered by the drawing of the entrance tips into the pots. In case in which flappers were attached to the entrance tips, the entering was very hampered, hut the getting-out was not shown.

The distributions of copepods and chaetognaths in waters off the southern coast of Korea were investigated to evaluate their reliability as indicator species of different water masses. The samples for this study were collected vertically from about 5m above the bottom at 28 stations along 8 transects in three different months, February, April, and August, 1988. The sampling gear used was 0.45-meter NORPAC plankton net fitted with 0.33mm mesh. Acartia clausi, Centropages abdominalis, and Sagitta crassa were found to be reliable indicator species of neritic cold waters; Pleuromamma gracilis, Undinula darwini, Calocalanus plumulosus, Calanopia elliptica, and Sagitta enflata were of oceanic warm waters; Temora discaudata and Centropages furcatus were of neritic warm waters. According to the cluster analyses of the species found, the distinctive area in February was divisible into two regions or water masses, the coastal and off-shore regions; in April, however, it was divisible into four regions. In August, it was divisible into three areas, further indicating the strength of the Kuroshio tributaries pushing toward the coast.
This study was conducted to compare extruded pellets (EP) and soft extruded pellets (SEP) with a raw fish-based moist pellet (MP) diet on the growth and flesh quality of Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. Three groups of 20,000 fish (initial mean weight 133 g) per net-cage ($6{\times}12{\times}7m$) were fed commercial EP, SEP or MP for 16 months. The survival of fish fed SEP was higher than those of fish fed EP or MP. The highest growth performances were observed in the mean weight gain, total weight gain, and feed efficiency of fish fed MP, followed by those fed EP and SEP. Among the fish fed on extruded pellets, the total weight gain of fish fed SEP was higher than that of those fed EP, while fish fed EP grew faster than those fed SEP. No notable differences in body composition, sensory scores or textural properties of the dorsal muscle were observed in fish fed on EP, SEP or MP. Thus, it is suggested that extruded pellets, rather than raw fish-based moist pellets, could be fed to Korean rockfish without compromising flesh quality.

Demersal fishery resources were collected by an otter trawl in May, August and November 1996 at 9 stations off Youngkwang. And they were compared with the data obtained by a stow net, Of 73 species identified, assemblages were consisted of $63.0\%$ in fish, $14\%$ in shrimps, $14\%$ in crabs, $5\%$ in cephalopods and $3\%$ in gastropods. Johnius grypotus, Palaemon gravieri, Crangon hakodatei, Cynoglossus joyneri, Collichthys niveatus predominated in abundance, consisting of $64.4\%$ in the number of individuals. Catch by an otter trawl consisted mainly of demersal fishery resources, while catch by a stow net consisted mainly of pelagic fishery resources.
To study the distribution of ichthyoplankton in Asan Bay, samples were collected with a Bongo net at 8 stations from April, July and October of 1991, and January of 1992. The dominant fish eggs included the eggs of Nibea spp., Engraulis japonica, Callionymus spp., and others. The eggs of Nibea spp. and Engraulis japonica were $97.70\%$ and $1.30\%$ of the total egg abundance, respectively. Twenty three species of fish larvae were identified. The predominant species were gobiid fishes accounting for $32.84\%$ of the all fish larvae, and followed by Ammodytes personatus($16.69\%$). Other major species were Anguilla japonica, Nibea spp., Pampus echinogaster and Engrualis japonica. These 6 taxa constituted $90.40\%$ of the total larvae collected.
In order to find out the most favorable shape and structure of pot for crab, Charybdis japonica Edwards, the common box type and cylinder type of net pots with two entrances, and the modified cone type and box type of net ones with four were prepared respectively. Then, the ability of the above pots attracting the crab into them and their catches were investigated through tank and field experiments. The attracting ability was higher in pots with four entrances than those with two. In case of two entrance pots, the ability was a little higher in the cylinder type than in the box type. But in four entrance pots, the box type yielded a little higher ability than the cone type. The catches were also arranged by the pots in almost same order with the attracting ability. But, it was only added to the arrangement that the cone type with four entrances had no significant difference of catch with the cylinder type with two entrances. Thus, the most favorable pot for the crab was concluded to be the box type with four entrances.
This study was carried out to understand feeding ecology of black rockfish, Sebastes inermis in the coastal waters off Shinsudo, Sachon. The specimens were collected by angling, gill net, small danish seine, and long-bag net from February 1984 to May 1985. The fish consisted of 5 age groups from 0 to 4. Feeding activity was more intensive in the early morning and late afternoon in spring and summer, but the fish showed intermittent feeding activities in autumn and winter. Although the food items of the fish changed slightly by seasons and with growth of the fish, main food items were cope pods, gammarids, caprellids, carideans, polychaetes, and brachyurans. Of these food items, cope pods were major preys for the fish of age group 0, and gammarids over age group 1. Evenness and diversity of the food items increased as the fish grew. In consideration of feeding organs, digestive organs and stomach contents of the fish, S. inermis seemed to be not only carnivore but also visual feeder consuming mainly small crustaceans.

A boat seine has been used as a major fishing gear for catching anchovy (Engraulis japonica) in the southern coastal waters of Korea since 1920s. The original seine was operated by two rowing boats as the haul seine. The rowing boats were, in recent, replaced by powered boats. The net size was enlarged by more than three times the original nit as they began to by operated in the deeper waters of approximately sixty meters. However, there are many problems in the efficiency of the fishing gear to be improved. The authors studied on the hydrodynamic resistance and performance of the boat seine net of the 1/10 scale model in tow. The results are summaried as follows. 1. The hydrodynamic resistance converted from model experiment into the full scale is: $$R_1=30,000\;v^{1.2}\;(0.2{\leqq}v{\leqq}1.0)$$$$R_2=16,000\;v^2\;(0.2{\leqq}v{\leqq}0.6)$$ where $R_1$ and $R_2$ denote the resistance of whole gear and of bag net in kg respectively, and v the speed of flow in m/sec. 2. In the extension wing, approximately seventy percent of the length of the ground rope from the towing end to the inside-wing slopes down from sea level toward the sea bottom, while the thirty percent of the inside of it remains parallel with th: 5:a level. The performance is regarded to b: inefficient for driving fish shoal into the inside-wing, especially for the shoal diving suddenly. 3. At the towing speed higher than 0.2 m/sec, the trailing edge of the inside-wing is blown backward beyond the seaming line connecting the inside-wing and the mouth of the bag net. It is regarded as an unreasonable performance to drive the fish shoal smoothly into the bag net. 4. At the towing speed higher than 0.2 m/sec, the posterior end of the lower bosom is lifted up above the level of the ground rope of the inside-wing. It is considered that the fish shoal diving suddenly can escape through the discrepancy between the lower bosom and the sea bottom, even if the ground rope of the inside-wing sweeps the sea bottom. 5. The angle of inclination of the upper bosom is estimated as $35\~40^{\circ}$. It seems that the inclination is too steep to drive smoothly the fish shoal diving toward the sea bottom into the bag net. 6. In structure, circumference of the posterior section of the bag net is wider by 1.3 times that of the anterior section. Actually in towing at a speed higher than 0.2m/sec, however, the circumference of the posterior section becomes smaller than that of the anterior section. It is recommended to be designed in a long cylindrical form.
Fish larvae were collected monthly with an ichthyoplankton net from 18 stations (including four stations located in eelgrass beds) in Gamak Bay and Yeoja Bay, southern Korea, in 2007. In total, 33 species of fish larvae were collected, of which Engraulis japonicus (48.5%), Tridentiger trigonocephalus (21.5%), and Omobranchus elegans (9.2%) were dominant. Dominant species varied seasonally: Hexagrammos otakii during December and January, Pholis nebulosa during January and March, Acanthogobius flavimanus in April, T. trigonocephalus in May, E. japonicus during June, July, September, and November, and Sillago japonica in August. Dominant species also differed between sites inside and outside the bays. Leiognathus nuchalis, O. elegans, and T. trigonocephalus were more abundant inside, while H. otakii was more abundant outside. From cluster analysis, three groups were identified according to sampling months (January-April, May-September, and October-December) and two groups according to station (inside and outside bays). The occurrence of small larvae of almost all major fish species indicated that the bays were used as spawning and nursery grounds. An exception was Lateolabrax japonicus, whose specimens were relatively large (>19 mm TL), suggesting that this fish may spawn offshore, with its juveniles approaching the bays with growth.
