Aquatic oligochaetes were investigated from a small amount of sediment sampled from the Jungnang Stream, an urban stream in Seoul, Korea, in November 2012. Sorted oligochaetes were observed under a light microscope in a drop of carbonated water, and then preserved in 70% ethanol. Some specimens were slide mounted using glycerin and Eupharal. As a result, the following 12 species were identified including 8 new Korean records, Bothrioneurum vejdoskyanum Stolc, Branchiodrilus hortensis (Stephenson), Chaetogaster cristalinus Vejdosky, Nais communis Piguet, Nais pardalis Piguet, Dero obtusa d'Udekem, Piguetiella denticulata Liang, and Haemonais waldvogeli Brescher and 4 additional known species, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Cleparede, Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard, Chaetogaster diastrophus (Gruithuisen), and Stylaria fossularis Leidy. This study shows how freshwater oligochaetes are diverse even in urban streams in Korea, if a proper sampling and examining method is employed.
Benthic macroinvertebrates were examined to elucidate community structures of a set of 9 shallow ponds from a total of 6 parks located in Seoul metropolitan area, Korea. The result showed that macroinvertebrates were diverse and abundant, and aquatic macrophyte provide habitat diversities in ponds. The differences among benthic macroinvertebrate community compositions seemed to be attributed to local biotic and abiotic interactions. We surveyed benthic macroinvertebrate, biotic (macrophyte), abiotic (turbidity, nutrient concentrations, conductivity, heavy metal concentration) and morphometric (area, depth) of the lentic systems. Generally, the benthic macroinvertebrates were dominated by Cloeon dipterum or Coenagrion sp.. Distribution of the aquatic macrophyte community was correlated with the species composition of macroinvertebrates. The result demonstrated a significant and positive relationship between habitat quality and macroinvertebrate composition.
Standing crop distribution of aquatic plants in the West Nakdong River and riparian wetlands in the Nakdong River were surveyed in May, July and September, 2010. Total 25 aquatic macrophyte species (submerged: 9, leaf-floating: 3, free-floating: 5, emergent: 8) were observed during the survey periods. Distribution area of aquatic plants and proportion of submerged communities were highest in Garakchi-deung ($212,032m^2$, 72.7%). The distribution area of aquatic plants was highest in Phragmites australis community ($421,584m^2$), followed by Hydrilla verticillata-Vallisneria natans community ($181,511m^2$), Potamogeton wrightii-Vallisneria natans community ($61,604m^2$), and Hydrocharis dubia community ($49,709m^2$). Garakch-ideung (212,032 kg) also had the highest aquatic plant production, followed by Suanchi-deung (15,546 kg), Daedong (5,813 kg), Dunchi-do (3,963 kg), Maekdo (1,463 kg), Yeommak (571 kg), Jungsa-do (530 kg), and Shinan (300 kg). Average standing crop of the study area were $147.8{\pm}20.8g\;DW{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in 1988, $96.1{\pm}20.0g\;DW{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in 2000, and $172.6{\pm}76.1g\;DW{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in 2010. For a sustainable management of river habitat and food source, aquatic plant should concurrently be surveyed with river environmental variables (i.e. sediment, nutrient, flow).
The development of stream ecology, especially the progress of that field in North America, has been briefly reviewed, and stream studies in Korea were analyzed through literature survey. During the last two decades, theoretical advances in stream ecology and understanding of the structure and function of stream ecosystem were made from the studies mainly in North America. Early studies (1960-1970) focused on determination of the environmental factors controlling the distribution and abundance of organisms dwelling in streams. Introduction of conceptual development, such as the functional feeding concept, river continuum concept, and nutrient spiraling was notable in the late 70's and the 80's. For last 20 years, experimentation approaches to apply ecological principles were very fruitful in the understanding of community structure. Even though studies on the stream ecosystem is Korea have a long history, most of works were concentrated on limited subjects: water quality, abundance and distribution of aquatic insects and fishes. Basic ecological attributes of stream organi는 and test of ecological principles have rarely been a subject of research topics. We must concentrate our effort to enhance our understanding of stream and river ecosystem through qualitative, experimental and interdisciplinary approaches.
This paper describes the ecological structure and function of riparian zone, and their historical changes with land-use. The riparian zone consists of valley floor landform and riparian vegetation. The functions discussed are attenuation of sunlight energy, input of leaves and needles, contribution of woody debris to streams, and retention of flowing material out of transport. These primary functions directly or indirectly influence water and sediment qualities of streams, bars and floodplains, and thereby aquatic biota. Temporal changes in a hydrological system and riparian ecosystem were examined with reference to land-use conversin in order to understand the linkages between these two systems in Toikanbetsu River. The influences of channelization and land-use on discharge of suspended sediment and wetland vegetation was also investigated in Kushiro Marsh. These two examples suggested that the ecological functions of riparian zone have been degraded as flood control and reclamation works have expanded in the past twenty years The author proposes river restoration planning by preserving or creating landscape elements based on the concepts of sustaining physical and ecological linkages.
This review summarizes the history of freshwater zooplankton research in Korean Society of Limnology and necessary future topics that are remain poorly investigated in South Korea based on main research topics of published articles focusing on lakes, reservoirs, rivers and wetland ecosystems. In Korea, a total 450 freshwater zooplankton species have been reported (85 species of cladocera, ca. 230 species of rotifera since 1939, and 138 species of copepoda), and they cover 10% of total zooplankton species list. In the present paper, we provide recent species list of zooplankton found in Korea and their taxonomic keys. Over periods of 45 years, there are 25 published papers for zooplankton biota in lentic ecosystems in Korean Journal of Ecology and Environment (KJEE). The ecology of zooplankton communities in rivers has focused on the mechanisms involved in regulating their abundance, diversity and spatio-temporal patterns of genus Bosmina and rotifers (genus Brachionus and Keratella) that are most frequently found from Korea. On the other hand, the studies on zooplankton in wetland has focused on Alona, Chydorus and Ceriodaphnia with special emphasis on their relationships with aquatic macrophytes. Even though studies on the freshwater ecosystem in Korea have a long history, a few of studies on zooplankton biota were conducted at rice paddy, Dumbeong and wetlands. During the last two decades, experimental advances in freshwater zooplankton ecology and understanding of structure and function of this biota were made from a series of articles mainly in journal of KJEE. For future studies, quantitative, experimental and interdisciplinary approaches would be key words to understand zooplankton ecology and their roles in aquatic ecosystems under changing environments, and we have suggested necessary zooplankton research fields and future directions.
The stomach contents of Lumpenella longirostris, Malacocottus gibber and Bothrocara hollandi from the East Sea were examined to determine their feeding ecology. Specimens were caught seasonally from 2004 to 2006. The primary prey items of each species included crustaceans and mollusks. L. longirostris is a benthophage that primarily consumes bottom crustaceans and bivalves. M. gibber and B. hollandi are meso-pelagicphages that primarily consume amphipods and cephalopods. However, the species are opportunistic feeders that exploit the available prey in their habitat. The empty stomach ratio of the species is larger than that of offshore species (e.g. hairtail fish and yellow goose fish), and the prey diversity of the species evaluated in this study was much smaller than that of offshore species.
Specimens of Callionymus beniteguri (n=89) were collected from the waters off the coast of Taean, Korea, between April 2008 and January 2009, and their feeding behavior was observed. C. beniteguri (4.0-15.5 cm SL) was found to be a bottom-feeding carnivore that primarily preyed on gammarid amphipods, and secondarily consumed polychaetes but also ingested bivalves, shrimps, cumaceans, and sea urchins. Six additional minor prey groups also contributed to its diet, but the index of relative importance (IRI) for these groups was relatively low (<1.0). C. beniteguri exhibited size-related dietary changes. Small individuals (<10 cm SL) mainly consumed amphipods. As fish size increased, amphipods tended to decline in IRI, while the contributions of bivalves, sea urchins, and polychaetes became more important.
Proliferation of algae on the surface of concrete or mortar in aquatic habitat has a negative impact on maintenance of concrete-based structures. Growth of algae may decrease stability of structure by bio-deterioration. In this study, we developed a functional mortar for restraining bio-deterioration by using $Cu^{2+}$ ion. The mortar contains soluble glass beads made of $Cu^{2+}$ ion, which can dissolve into water slowly. Mortars prepared with different ratio of glass beads (0, 2, 5, 10, and 15%) were placed in a culture medium with algae and incubated over a month period. Water chemistry, chlorophyll-a, and extracellular enzyme activities were measured. The incubation was conducted in both freshwater and seawater conditions, to assess applicability to both aquatic conditions. Overall, mortar with Cu glass exhibited lower chlorophyll-a content, suggesting that the functional mortar reduced algal growth. DOC concentration increased because debris of dead algae increased. Cu glass also decreased phosphatase activity, which is involved in the regeneration of inorganic P from organic moieties. Since, P is often a limiting nutrient for algal production, algal growth may be inhibited. Activities of ${\beta}$-glucosidase and N-acetylglucosaminidase were not significantly affected because carbon and nitrogen mineralization may not be influenced by the Cu glass beads. Our study suggests that functional mortar with Cu glass beads may reduce the growth of algae on the surface, while it has little environmental impact.
