  • The Group Digital Surveillance System for Fishery Safety and Security (GDSS-F2S) is to provide the target tracking information and the target identification information in order to secure an huge aquaculture farm-field from a thief. The two information, however, is not enough to indict the thief due to the lack of lawful evidences for the crime actions. To overcome this problem, we consider the target image information as one of solutions after discussion with the effective countermeasure tools for the crime actions with scenario-based analysis according to the geological feature of aquaculture farm-field. To capture the real-time image for the trespassing targets in the aquaculture farm-field area, we developed the image capture system which is consists of ultra sensitive CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) camera with 0.0001 Lux and supplementary devices. As results from the field tests for GDSS-F2S with image capture system, the high definite images of the vehicle number plate and shape, person's actions and features are obtainable not only day time but also very dark night without moon light. Thus it is cleary known that the improved GDSS-F2S with image capture system can provide much enough lawful evidences for the crime actions of targets.

  • Seaweed aquaculture technologies have developed dramatically over the past 70 years mostly in Asia and more recently in Americas and Europe. However, there are still many challenges to overcome with respect to the science and to social acceptability. The challenges include the development of strains with thermo-tolerance, disease resistance, fast growth, high concentration of desired molecules, the reduction of fouling organisms and the development of more robust and cost efficient farm systems that can withstand storm events in offshore environments. It is also important to note that seaweed aquaculture provides ecosystem services, which improve conditions of the coastal waters for the benefit of other living organisms and the environment. The ecosystem services role of seaweed aquaculture and its economic value will also be quantitatively estimated in this review.

  • This study aims to detect the change of marine aquaculture farm within the boundary of Hallyeo Marine National Park. Comparison has been made on the Landsat images taken in 1984 and 2002 respectively by using feature extraction methods and other image analysis techniques. During the 18 year period between 1984 and 2002, total area of the aquaculture farms has been decreased in 63 percent. The reason for the change seems to be that aquaculture farms became concentrated only around the Geoje Islands due to the growth of the labor- and capital-intensive cage aquaculture for the expensive fish species instead of traditional oyster farming. Authors suggest the monitoring using remotely-sensed data as the best tool for the management of marine aquaculture farms on the basis of accuracy of analysis and relatively cheap cost. Management strategies of salmon farms in Tasmania, Australia has been analyzed to find the field techniques necessary for the management of aquaculture.

  • This study induced biological denitrification and nitrification via a biofiltration process with the view of removing nitrogen from land-based fish farm effluent. To achieve this, we operated an aquaculture nitrogen-removal system that includes a denitrification and nitrification reactor [working volume 40 L, flow rate 64.8 L, HRT (hydraulic retention time) 14.8 h, HRT considering recycling of NOx 7.4 h]. In the continuous process, the nitrification rate of ammonium nitrogen exceeded 90% at a steady state and the denitrification efficiency exceeded 80% with recycling to a pre-anoxic reactor. In addition, the pH in the final effluent was lower with a low influent water alkalinity averaging 100 mg/L (as $CaCO_3$). For effective denitrification reactions, carbon must be supplied via particulate organic matter (POM) hydrolysis because of the low C/N (carbon/nitrogen) ratio in the water.

  • Despite a variety of development in fish farming during the last decades, fish diseases by bacteria, virus, and parasites are still major problems in aquaculture. Aquaculture of Hounder fish is widely performed around Korea as well as Jeju island, due to relatively stable seed production, short farming period, and a higher value in market. However, intensive feeding and environmental pollution in aquacutural farm act as a great limiting factor in economic aspect. (omitted)

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the long term effects of dehulled soybean meal (DHSM) as fish meal (FM) replacer in the diet for olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, for 42 wk at a commercial fish farm. The four experimental diets were MP (moist pellet based on raw fish), $DHSM_0$ (fish meal based dry pellet), $DHSM_{30}$ (30% fish meal was replaced by DHSM) and COMD (commercial dry pellet). Fish were fed one of the four diets containing 50% crude protein and 16.7 kJ available energy/kg diet for 42 wk. Fish averaging $3.20{\pm}0.04g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were initially distributed to each tank as a group of 6,000 fish reared in a flow-through system. At the end of the experiment, average body weight of fish was $315{\pm}9.3g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) ). Weight gain (WG) and feed efficiency (FE) of fish fed MP, DHSM0 and DHSM30 showed no significant difference among the diet treatments. However, WG and FE of fish fed MP were significantly higher than those of fish fed COMD (p<0.05). Specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and survival of fish fed all diets were not significantly different among the dietary treatments. Therefore, these results indicate that DHSM could replace up to 30% white fish meal with amino acid supplementation in olive flounder diets for long-term feeding practice at the commercial farm.

  • This study is aimed to analyze the economic performance of black rockfish aquaculture by standardizing cost structures by region and farming size. The result of survey on farming and sale condition in each region, stocking density, survival rate, juvenile price, and unit production was the highest at Yeosu and Tongyeong, Heuksando showed the lowest. While rearing period was the longest at Tongyeong, the shortest region was Yeosu and Wando. In farming cost structure by region, amount of feeing was the highest at Tongyeong and Yeosu, and the lowest was Heuksando. Cost of medicine was high in Wando and Taean region, Yeosu and Hecksando was low. In case of farm size, feed cost ratio was high in the order of medium(0.75ha), small(0.25ha) and large(1.25ha) size. Standard production cost at every farm size of Heuksando showed the lowest among these regions. Taean and Yeosu was middle, and Tongyeong and Wando was the highest. According to the income, profit rate and investment return of farm size in all regions, as the bigger farm size, the higher income and profit rate was revealed. However, in case of Wando, Taean, and Heuksando which regions has high investment return, medium farm size was higher than large size. The result of economic analysis according to various factors, economic feasibility of black rockfish aquaculture in marine floating cage was showed significant changes by rearing and market condition.

  • This study was conducted to better understand the impact of marine fish farming by estimating mass balances of carbon and nitrogen. According to the results, 94.55% of carbon and 95.66% of nitrogen inputs were from the feed supplied in the farm. Of the total carbon emissions in the farm, 47.28% was due to fish respiration, which was subsequently released into seawater. Advection and diffusion in the farm contributed to 30.29% of the carbon released. In the case of nitrogen, 50.70% of the nitrogen released into the seawater was produced by fish excreta, and 31.37% was advected and diffused into the system. The sedimentary environment received 3.82% and 3.10% of the carbon and nitrogen released from the farm, respectively. The fish feed used for healthy growth contained 11.64% carbon and 9.17% nitrogen. Since the feed type was floating pellets, the load released into the sedimentary environment was relatively lower than that released into the marine environment. These findings suggest that the identification of an optimal fish feed that respects fish physiology and preserves a healthy ecology is critical for the future of aquaculture. Furthermore, ecosystem-based aquaculture systems that decrease environmental burden, while endeavoring to improve environmental health, are required.

  • As problems such as water pollution and fish species depletion have become serious, a land-based fish farming is receiving a great attention for ensuring stable productivity. In the fish farming, it is important to determine the timing of shipments, as one of key factors to increase net profit on the aquaculture. In this paper, we propose a system for predicting net profit to support decision of timing of shipment using fish farming-related statistical data. The prediction system consists of growth and farm-gate price prediction models, a cost statistics table, and a net profit estimation algorithm. The Gaussian process regression (GPR) model is exploited for weight prediction based on the analysis that represents the characteristics of the weight data of cultured fish under the assumption of Gaussian probability processes. Moreover, the long short-term memory (LSTM) model is applied considering the simple time series characteristics of the farm-gate price data. In the case of GPR model, it allows to cope with data missing problem of the weight data collected from the fish farm in the time and temperature domains. To solve the problem that the data acquired from the fish farm is aperiodic and small in amount, we generate the corresponding data by adopting a data augmentation method based on the Gaussian model. Finally, the estimation method for net profit is proposed by concatenating weight, price, and cost predictions. The performance of the proposed system is analyzed by applying the system to the Korean flounder data.

  • The sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi is mainly cultured in Tongyeong, Southern coastal area of Korea. This study presents the physiological rates of respiration, excretion, feeding and assimilation efficiency of the sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi to analyze the SFG(scope for growth) and net growth efficiency, determined during 2007. Oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion rates increased with a rise in temperature during the summer period whereas feeding rates decreased. The O:N ratio was high during winter(October to February). Assimilation efficiency showed an annual average of 75.4% during the experimental period, except during a period of elevated temperature in July to September(average $25^{\circ}C$). Net growth efficiency($K_2$) was 8.7 to 64.2% except for May to September, when temperature increased at the aquaculture farm. SFG was negative from May to September, reflecting high temperatures and low feeding rates during this period; its highest positive values occurred during winter.
