In Korea, aquaculture is one of major incomes for fishing households and amounts to $50.6\%$ of total incomes for domestic fishery. The loss of aquaculture farm due to thievery at sea increases every year. In this research, we propose the system model for development of telemonitoring system, which protects aquaculture farms. For the proposed system, general requirements are described. Our system is cost-effective when it is applied to domestic fishing households.

The objective of the present study is to compare various conventional and recently evolved satellite image-processing techniques and to ascertain the best possible technique that can identify and position of aquaculture farms accurately in and around the Younggwang coastal area. Several conventional techniques performed to extract such information fiom the Landsat-TM imagery do not seem to yield better information about the aquaculture farms, and lead to misclassification. The large errors between the actual and extracted aquaculture farm information are due to existence of spectral confusion and inadequate spatial resolution of the sensor. This leads to possible occurrence of mixture pixels or 'mixels' of the source of errors in the classification techniques. Understanding the confusing and mixture pixel problems requires the development of efficient methods that can enable more reliable extraction of aquaculture farm information. Thus, the more recently evolved methods such as the step-by-step partial spectral end-member extraction and linear spectral unmixing methods are introduced. The farmer one assumes that an end-member, which is often referred to as 'spectrally pure signature' of a target feature, does not appear to be a spectrally pure form, but always mix with the other features at certain proportions. The assumption of the linear spectral unmxing is that the measured reflectance of a pixel is the linear sum of the reflectance of the mixture components that make up that pixel. The classification accuracy of the step-by-step partial end-member extraction improved significantly compared to that obtained from the traditional supervised classifiers. However, this method did not distinguish the aquaculture ponds and non-aquaculture ponds within the region of the aquaculture farming areas. In contrast, the linear spectral unmixing model produced a set of fraction images for the aquaculture, water and soil. Of these, the aquaculture fraction yields good estimates about the proportion of the aquaculture farm in each pixel. The acquired proportion was compared with the values of NDVI and both are positively correlated (R$^2$ =0.91), indicating the reliability of the sub-pixel classification.ixel classification.

This paper examines the design feasibility of cage aquaculture coexistent with an offshore wind farm in the southwestern sea of South Korea. Among the many types of fish farms, 2 × 3 cage aquaculture was selected for the investigation and the initial design including mooring lines, bridles, etc. was drawn with iterative numerical simulations using Orcaflex. Experimental campaigns were conducted to validate the numerical results, and they were found to be in good agreement with the experiments. Using a validated numerical model, the tension of mooring lines and the deformed volumes of the facility were examined under given operating and survival conditions. The validated model will be further used to investigate various aspects of the cage farm design for design optimization.

Phenotypic plasticity was examined in the economically and ecologically important brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum in southwestern Nova Scotia, considering specifically how nutrient loading affected its vegetative and reproductive features. To determine this, we examined morphometric changes in A. nodosum from two sites receiving direct effluent impacts from a land-based finfish aquaculture facility and from two control sites, approximately 2 km away from the aquaculture facility in opposite directions. Fronds from test sites were significantly younger than from control sites (5 y vs. 8 y); however, fronds from farm sites were significantly larger (219 g vs. 90 g) because of their higher growth rates. Thalli from farm sites had greater reproductive potential, as shown by numbers of receptacle initials (797 initials vs. 281 initials). These results suggest limited nutrient inflows from land-based aquaculture may positively affect adjacent Ascophyllum populations by inducing higher growth rates. We conclude that the coordination of effluent management from land-based aquaculture with natural resource harvesting of A. nodosum may be beneficial. Further study is necessary to determine the limits of nutrient loading for this potentially beneficial outcome.
This study aimed to investigate the growth performance of far eastern catfish (Silurus asotus) on outdoor fish farms to obtain basic data for the domestic eastern catfish aquaculture industry. An outdoor fish farm was directly monitored from June 2018 to October 2019 to determine the farming conditions, growth performance, and water quality. The growth performance in 2017 was analyzed using data from the same fish farm. Three years of monitoring showed that the fish farm required approximately 5-6 months between stocking, harvesting, and selling an S. asotus batch. The growth parameters, namely, the weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR) for culture periods, SGR for feeding periods, and feed coefficient rate (FCR), were 4,664.7%, 1.27%, 2.43%, and 1.25 in 2017; 6,452.0%, 1.52%, 2.79%, and 1.42 in 2018; and 3,270.0%, 1.11%, 2.12%, and 1.38 in 2019, respectively. Moreover, the WGR was two-fold higher in 2018 than 2019, whereas the FCR was more effective in 2019 than 2018, presumably because of the stocking density. No mass mortality was observed during the water quality analysis. The results of this study provide basic data for the development of the catfish industry.

Offshore-aquaculture is a new idea, has emerged as an alternative method, which can minimize the damage to the natural disaster due to the environment pollution by the fish farming activities in the coast and overcome the problems of vicious cycle in fish farming management. On the other hand, as the current fish farming laws and institutions focus on the support for offshore-aquaculture, having the limit to revitalizing and supporting the fish farming business in the open sea, it is necessary to amend the laws and institutions related to fish farm. We should be establish in connection with offshore-aquaculture, after the study aims at examining the foreign laws and institutions in such countries as USA and Norway, establishing the methods for the future laws and institutions of open sea fish farm through the analysis of the issues and controversies in the process of enactment in Korea.

As demands for efficient and echo-friendly production of marine products increase, smart aquaculture based on information and communication technology (ICT) has become a promising trend. The smart aquaculture is expected to control fundamental farm environment variables including water temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels with less human intervention. A recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) is required for the smart aquaculture which utilizes a purification tank to reuse water drained from the water tank while blocking the external environment. Elaborate water treatment should be considered to properly operate RAS. However, analyzing the water treatment performance is a challenging issue because fish farm circumstance continuously changes and recursively affects water fluidity. To handle this issue, we introduce computational fluid dynamics (CFD) aided water treatment analysis including water fluidity and the solid particles removal efficiency. We adopt RAS parameters widely used in the real aquaculture field to better reflect the real situation. The simulation results provide several indicators for users to check performance metrics when planning to select appropriate RAS without actually using it which costs a lot to operate.

The objective of the present study was to investigate fish farm and growth performances of Chinese muddy loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) under indoor and outdoor aquaculture conditions for the domestic loach aquaculture industry. The investigation was conducted from August 2017 to October 2019 at one indoor farm (D-site) and two outdoor farms (P1-site and P2-site). Results showed that WG (weight gain), DWG (daily weight gain), and SWG (specific weight gain) based on growth measurements were 175.27±36.2%, 7.98±3.3%, and 0.94±0.2% at D-site, 320±34%, 4.07±0.6%, and 0.55±0.1% at P1-site, and 295.9±53%, 4.15±0.5%, and 0.62±0.1% at P2-site, respectively. WG was higher in outdoor farms (P1-site and P2-site), while DWG and SWG were higher in the indoor farm (D-site). Such differences of the present study might be due to differences in growth, water quality, plant and sale frequency depending on aquaculture types. In particular, outdoor farms takes more than a year to have sales whereas indoor farms can have sales three times in a year.

Illegal aquaculture farms that cause marine pollution and ship accidents are managed and controlled by local organizations, but they experience many difficulties due to the vast waters and insufficient human resources. This study aims to utilize new IP-RFID technology to propose an efficient aquaculture farm facility management system This system attaches Ip-Tags to aquaculture farms that can provide facility information and location in real-time through IP communications. This allows for efficient management of facilities and the restriction of illegal farms. This system can also provide locations of farm facilities that sink to the ocean floor, reducing marine pollution caused by lost farms.

In order to evaluate the recovery of fishing ground environment after the cessation of aquaculture farming, we examined the variation in sediment quality over time using different geochemical factors and investigated whether these factors are indicators of sediment quality recovery. The study area was an oyster Crassostrea gigas, farm in Tongyeong, Geyongsangnam-do, South Korea, where aquaculture activities had been carried out for 20 years, and the changes in water and sediment environment were monitored for 14 months after the abandonment of the farm. The mean water depth was 14 m, with a tidal range of 3 m, and seawater current velocity ranged from 4.7 to 7.0 cm/s. After the abandonment of the farm, total organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations in the surface sediments decreased significantly over time compared to those in the control site; in particular, immediately after farm abandonment, acid-volatile sulfide concentrations decreased relatively rapidly. Carbohydrate and protein concentrations in the sediments showed no significant changes; however, lipid concentrations markedly decreased. Further studies on other aquaculture taxa and various aquaculture areas are needed to establish new policies for environmental management of fishing grounds, such as relocation of fishing grounds and determination of optimal fallowing periods.
