  • Many practical engineering problems are associated with nonlinear systems subjected to nonstationary random excitations. Equivalent linearization methods are commonly used to seek for approximate solutions to this kind of problems. Compared to various approaches developed in the frequency and mixed time-frequency domains, though directly solving the system equation of motion in the time domain would improve computation efficiency, only limited studies are available. Considering the fact that the orthogonal functions have been widely used to effectively improve the accuracy of the approximated responses and reduce the computational cost in various engineering applications, an orthogonal-function-based equivalent linearization method in the time domain has been proposed in the current paper for nonlinear systems subjected to nonstationary random excitations. In the numerical examples, the proposed approach is applied to a SDOF system with a set-up spring and a SDOF Duffing oscillator subjected to stationary and nonstationary excitations. In addition, its applicability to nonlinear MDOF systems is examined by a 3DOF Duffing system subjected to nonstationary excitation. Results show that the proposed method can accurately predict the nonlinear system response and the formulation of the proposed approach allows it to be capable of handling any general type of nonstationary random excitations, such as the seismic load.

  • The electrostatic effect on particle deposition onto a heated, Horizontal free-standing wafer surface was investigated numerically. The deposition mechanisms considered were convection, Brownian and turbulent diffusion, sedimentation, thermophoresis and electrostatic force. The electric charge on particle needed to calculate the electrostatic migration velocity induced by the local electric field was assumed to be the Boltzmann equilibrium charge. The electrostatic forces acted upon the particle included the Coulombic, image, dielectrophoretic and dipole-dipole forces based on the assumption that the particle and wafer surface are conducting. The electric potential distribution needed to calculate the local electric field around the wafer was calculated from the Laplace equation. The averaged and local deposition velocities were obtained for a temperature difference of 0-10 K and an applied voltage of 0-1000 v.The numerical results were then compared with those of the present suggested approximate model and the available experimental data. The comparison showed relatively good agreement between them.

  • The electrode reduction velocity constants of Calcium, Nickel and Manganese (Zinc) ions in various supporting electrolyte solutions and temperatures were measured by polarography. The rate constants of those ions calculated by Delahay's graphimetric method and Koutecky's method were matched in 50% of experimental error. This error would be accountable because of the application of thier approximate method. But there are magnificent differences between those values and Randles and Sentioomerton's. We, also, have attempted to deduce the simplified relation between velocity constant and electrocappilary characteristics, computing the velocity constant simply and rapidly, on which Kambara, lshii and Imai, Adachi had studied and established thier related equations using parameter x, y and z, for some limited range of x. And we have extended the equation to the wider range of y value than they did for the above mentioned ions.

  • In this paper thermo-mechanical vibration analysis of a porous functionally graded (FG) Timoshenko beam in thermal environment with various boundary conditions are performed by employing a semi analytical differential transform method (DTM) and presenting a Navier type solution method for the first time. The temperature-dependent material properties of FG beam are supposed to vary through thickness direction of the constituents according to the power-law distribution which is modified to approximate the material properties with the porosity phases. Also the porous material properties vary through the thickness of the beam with even and uneven distribution. Two types of thermal loadings, namely, uniform and linear temperature rises through thickness direction are considered. Derivation of equations is based on the Timoshenko beam theory in order to consider the effect of both shear deformation and rotary inertia. Hamilton's principle is applied to obtain the governing differential equation of motion and boundary conditions. The detailed mathematical derivations are presented and numerical investigations are performed while the emphasis is placed on investigating the effect of several parameters such as porosity distributions, porosity volume fraction, thermal effect, boundary conditions and power-low exponent on the natural frequencies of the FG beams in detail. It is explicitly shown that the vibration behavior of porous FG beams is significantly influenced by these effects. Numerical results are presented to serve benchmarks for future analyses of FG beams with porosity phases.

  • An adaptive maximum power point tracking (MPPT) scheme employing a variable scaling factor is presented. A MPPT control loop was constructed analytically and the magnitude variation in the MPPT loop gain according to the operating point of the PV array was identified due to the nonlinear characteristics of the PV array output. To make the crossover frequency of the MPPT loop gain consistent, the variable scaling factor was determined using an approximate curve-fitted polynomial equation about linear expression of the error. Therefore, a desirable dynamic response and the stability of the MPPT scheme were maintained across the entire MPPT voltage range. The simulation and experimental results obtained from a 3 KW rated prototype demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed MPPT scheme.

  • Master plan plans for new airports should estimate the approximate scale of the airside's moorings and terminals. The size of the pavilion can be determined by complex factors such as the operating hours of the operating company, the frequency of operation, and the aircraft class. Among them, the number of flights is calculated using the Horon-jeff equation because of the relationship between the number of flights and the time occupied by the mains. Since this estimation formula is a simplified formula, it is necessary to verify the appropriateness of the method of estimating the scale and to suggest improvement directions. Therefore, in this study, we propose a method of estimating the size of the western flags by investigating and analyzing the main airports of overseas airports to determine whether the application of the Horon-jeff formula is appropriate.

  • Based on novel Galerkin's technique, the theoretical study gives a prediction to estimate the vibrations of FG rotating cylindrical shell. Terms of ring supports have been introduced by a polynomial function. Three different laws of volume fraction are utilized for the vibration of cylindrical shells. Variation frequencies with the locations of ring supports have been analyzed and these ring supports are placed round the circumferential direction. The base of this approach is an approximate estimation of eigenvalues of proper functions which are the results of solutions of vibrating equation. Each longitudinal wave number corresponds to a particular boundary condition. The results are given in tabular and graphical forms. By increasing different value of height-to-radius ratio, the resulting backward and forward frequencies increase and frequencies decrease on increasing length-to-radius ratio. There is a new form of frequencies is obtained for different positions of ring supports, which is bell shaped. Moreover, on increasing the rotating speed, the backward frequencies increase and forward frequencies decreases.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the cyclic behavior of the D-shaped dampers (DSD). Similarly, at first, the numerical model was calibrated using the experimental sample. Then, parametric studies were conducted in order to investigate the effect of the radius and thickness of the damper on energy dissipation, effective and elastic stiffness, ultimate strength, and equivalent viscous damping ratio (EVDR). An analytical equation for the elastic stiffness of the DSD was also proposed, which showed good agreement with experimental results. Additionally, approximate equations were introduced to calculate the elastic and effective stiffness, ultimate strength, and energy dissipation. These equations were presented according to the curve fitting technique and based on numerical results. The results indicated that reducing the radius and increasing the thickness led to increased energy dissipation, effective stiffness, and ultimate strength of the damper. On the other hand, increasing the radius and thickness resulted in an increase in EVDR. Moreover, the ratio of effective stiffness to elastic stiffness also played a crucial role in increasing the EVDR. The thickness and radius of the damper were evaluated as the most effective dimensions for reducing energy dissipation and EVDR.

  • This article investigates the free vibration behavior of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams embedded using variational analytical methods and artificial neural networks (ANN). The material properties of layered functionally graded CNTRC (FG-CNTRC) beams are estimated using nonlocal parameters modified power-law with different types of CNT distributions through the thickness direction of the beam. Adopting Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory to capture the small size effects, the nonlocal governing equations are derived and solved using the analytical method. And also, the problem was analyzed using the ANN method. The architecture of the proposed ANN model is 3-9-1. In the experiments, we used 112 different data to predict the natural frequency using ANN. Based on the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, the equations of motion as well as the boundary conditions of the beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. The classical beam theory is used to formulate a governing equation for predicting the free vibration of laminated CNTRC beams. According to the experimental results, the prediction ability of the ANN model is very good and the natural frequency can be predicted in ANN without attempting any experiments.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain the making procedure and the usage of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for interpretation of radiographic images. The conventional radiograms obtained after the creation of the lesions in the acrylic plates and were enhanced in color. The observer were informed of which tooth to examine, the 'a priori' probability of a lesion present and the approximate diameter of the lesions. The two groups of films were interpreted separately by the same observer using the same rating scale. The following rating scale was used: A; definitely no lesion, B; probably no lesion, C; not sure, D; probably a lesion, and E; definitely a lesion. In analysis, for each observer the diagnostic results in terms of true positive (TP) and false positive (FP) decisions were plotted on a graph. The lowest point on the graph represents the TP and FP when only decisions designated as E according to the rating scale are included. The next point shows the TP and FP values when diagnoses designated as D are added and so forth. By connecting such plot points, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves is obtained. The area under the curve represents the diagnostic accuracy resulting from a diagnostic performance at pure chance level and a value of 1.0 at perfect performance. This method has been known as an useful method to detect the minute difference for each radiographic technic, each observer and for the different lesion depths.
