A Lagrangian Relaxation Approach to Capacity Planning for a Manufacturing System with Flexible and Dedicated Machines

  • We consider a multiperiod capacity planning problem for determining a mix of flexible and dedicated capacities under budget restriction. These capacities are controlled by purchasing flexible machines and/or new dedicated machines and disposing old dedicated machines. Acquisition and replacement schedules are determined and operations are assigned to the flexible or dedicated machines for the objective of minimizing the sum of discounted costs of acquisition and operation of flexible machines, new dedicated machines, and old dedicated machines. In this research, the Problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear Program and solved by a Lagrangian relaxation approach. A subgradient optimization method is employed to obtain lower bounds and a multiplier adjustment method is devised to improve the bounds. We develop a linear programming based Lagrangian heuristic algorithm to find a good feasible solution of the original problem. Results of tests on randomly generated test problems show that the algorithm gives relatively good solutions in a reasonable amount of computation time.

  • Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) parts are made by piling up thin layers that cause the stair stepping effect at the surface of FDM parts. This effect brings about poor surface roughness of the part and requires additional post machining such as manual finishing that is detrimental to the part geometry and time consuming. Determining optimal build orientation for FDM parts can be one solution to minimize the post machining. However, by using the CAD model, calculating the optimal build orientation is impractical due to heavy computing process. In order to calculate the optimal build orientation with high speed. the surface roughness model based on measured data and interpolation is newly developed in this research. Also. the genetic algorithm (GA) is applied for acquiring reliable solution. Finally, It is verified from the test that the presented approach is very efficient for reducing the additional post machining process fer FDM parts.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for recovering the 3-D shape from a single shaded image is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, by using the relation between the height and surface gradient (p, q), a set of linear equations is derived from the linearized reflectance function. Then the 3-D surface is recovered by employing the conjugate gradient technique. In order to improve the convergence speed of the solution, we also employ the hierarchical basis function and multiresolution images in the algorithm. A method for determining the regularization parameter, which is determined by trial and error in the conventional approach, is also introduced. In addition, the proposed algorithm attempts to recover the 3-D surface without requiring the boundary conditions, making it suitable for a real-time implementation. Simulation results for real image as well as synthetic image are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • It is more appropriate to treat that the semi-solid mixture as a single phase material that obeys incompressibility in the global sense and to analyze the liquid flow only locally than the approach based on compressible yield criteria. In the present study, a numerical algorithm of updating the solid volume fraction based on mixture theory has been developed. Finite element analysis of simple upsetting was carried out using the proposed algorithm to investigate the degree of macro-segregation according to friction conditions and compressive strain rates under the isothermal condition. The simulation results were compared to experimental results available in reference to test the validity of the currently proposed algorithm. Since the comparison results show a good agreement it is construed that the proposed algorithm can contribute to the development of numerical analysis of determining the solid volume fraction semi-solid processing.

Touch Position Recovery Algorithm for Differential Sensing Touch Screen

  • Differential sensing methods are more effective in alleviating panel noise than single-line sensing, and thus have been increasingly used in the touch screen industry. However, they have a drawback: they tend to cancel out multiple touches and need touch position recovery algorithms. This paper introduces a novel algorithm of touch position recovery for differential sensing, which is a low-complexity but high-accuracy approach for determining multiple touch positions. We have implemented the proposed method in a touch screen controller system on a chip. In the simulation experiments using realistic touch screen models and a differential sensing circuit, the algorithm exhibited a high detection performance of a signal-to-noise ratio gain of up to 52.21 dB. Therefore, we can conclude that the proposed method is substantially more accurate than the previous method. Further, the proposed method incurs little or no overhead in terms of the detection speed and the chip size.

  • This paper presents an operation sequence-based approach for determining machine cell layout in a cellular manufacturing environment. The proposed model considers the sequence of operations in evaluating the intercell and intracell movements. In this paper, design of cellular layout has an objective of minimization of total material flow among facilities, where the total material flow is defined as a weighted sum of both intercell and intracell part movements. The proposed algorithm is developed by using genetic algorithm and can be used to design an optimal cellular layout which can cope with changes of shop floor situation by considering constraints such as the number of machine cells and the number of machines in a machine cell.

A Sequential LiDAR Waveform Decomposition Algorithm

  • LiDAR waveform decomposition plays an important role in LiDAR data processing since the resulting decomposed components are assumed to represent reflection surfaces within waveform footprints and the decomposition results ultimately affect the interpretation of LiDAR waveform data. Decomposing the waveform into a mixture of Gaussians involves two related problems; 1) determining the number of Gaussian components in the waveform, and 2) estimating the parameters of each Gaussian component of the mixture. Previous studies estimated the number of components in the mixture before the parameter optimization step, and it tended to suggest a larger number of components than is required due to the inherent noise embedded in the waveform data. In order to tackle these issues, a new LiDAR waveform decomposition algorithm based on the sequential approach has been proposed in this study and applied to the ICESat waveform data. Experimental results indicated that the proposed algorithm utilized a smaller number of components to decompose waveforms, while resulting IMP value is higher than the GLA14 products.

  • 본 논문에서는 기상 제약이 많은 CCTV 보완을 위해 CW 도플러 레이더를 사용하는 감시 시스템에서 두 개 이상의 물체 접근 또는 이탈 정보를 감지하기 위한 모니터링 프로그램을 개발하였으며, 물체의 접근 또는 이탈 정보를 효율적으로 감지하기 위한 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 CW 도플러 레이더에서 수신한 신호를 FFT 처리하여 실수부와 허수부로 분리 후 각 동일 주파수 마다 진폭을 합산하여 이들의 위치를 통해 접근 또는 이탈을 판단하는 방식이다. 이를 시뮬레이션 및 실험을 통해 검증하였으며, 두 개 물체의 접근 또는 이탈을 감지한 결과 정상적으로 감지하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Simulated Annealing(SA) approach has been successfully applied to the combinatorial optimization problems with NP-hard complexity. To apply an SA algorithm to specific problems, generic parameters as well as problem-specific parameters must be determined. To overcome the embedded nature of SA, long computational time, some studies suggested the parameter design methods of determining SA related parameters. In this study, we propose a new parameter design approach based on robust design method. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, the extensive computation experiments are conducted on the mixed-model sequencing problems.

진화 프로그래밍기법을 적용한 단기 수화력 운용 (A Short Term Hydro-Thermal Scheduling using Evolutionary Programming)

  • This paper proposes an efficient method of hydro-thermal scheduling in coordination with head variation and hydraulically coupled plants using Evolutionary Programing(EP). Based on the EP technique, the proposed algorithm is capable of determining the global optimal solutions. The constraints such a power balance condition, water available condition and transmission losses are embedded and satisfied throughout the proposed EP approach. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated on the test systems and compared to those of other method. The results show that the new approach obtains a more highly optimal solutions than the conventional other methods such as newton-raphson method, Dynamic Programming(DP), LU factorization.
