  • In this paper, we introduce an application virtualization method that could be supported without changing and modifying any resources and execution environment on host system, using non-installable portable software format that could be executed by one-click on any host without installing process. For the purpose of designing and implementing an application virtualization method, we construct virtual supporting system that includes virtual file system and virtual registry hive on kernel level of Windows operating system. Also, when users execute portable software on any hosts to provide consistency on using portable software, we describe method of processing information of appending and modifying files and registry datum on virtual file system and virtual registry hive through Copy-on-Write scheme.

  • Application software streaming is a virtualization technology that enables users to use applications without installation on her/his computer. With application streaming service, a client immediately starts and uses the application as if it were installed. The application can be executed while executable codes for the application may still be streamed. Since the software streaming is based on networks, its service is affected by network failures. Network failures may cause the streamed application to stop, and to make it worse, also the system may crash because executable codes for the application can't be streamed from the streaming server. Using the Pareto principle (80 vs. 20 rule), users can be served continuously with the minimum functions that are frequently used, pre-fetched and cached if we provide a more intelligent and fault-tolerant streaming technique. This paper proposes the concept and technique named Evergreen. Using the Evergreen technique, users can continue using the streamed application while a network failure occurs, although user can access only the streamed code. We also discuss the implementation of Evergreen technique in details.

  • This paper proposes an efficient storage virtualization system which allows users to view hard disk resources of numerous nodes as a large logical space using distributed hash tables of P2P techniques. The proposed system is developed at device level of Windows operating system and is suitable for users in Intranet environments. This system is developed to be recognized as one hard disk at the Windows explorer for user conveniences and does not need a supplementary client program at the application layer. In addition, it enhances security via cutting off breaches from external networks.

  • In this paper, Cloud services to support the implementation of UNIX virtualization systems, and applications using Java-based service are proposed. Unix Virtualization with Web Server zone NFS zone and FTP zone is divided into three systems and is implemented. Applications are implemented with Java programming. Applicable to Unix systems, applications and data anytime, anywhere by uploading, downloading music, documents tasks, and It provides efficiency. From Unix virtualization for server resources, we can expect energy savings. Smart phone without PC conduct its mission and business with benefits.

  • In this paper, we have developed the application of a remote multi-lingual video guide that allows interaction with Set Top Box of a thin client by using the WebRTC, an web browser-based communication method. A server accesses a web camera in conjunction with digital information display of a thin client connected remotely and is exchanged guide information with user. This server can be played in thin client STB using virtualization based the high-quality video compression technology. Further, it is not dependent on the performance of the STB and provides a video guide remotely.

  • Recently virtualization has been one of the most popular research topics in system software area. While there already exist many commercial virtualization products for general-purpose computer system, little efforts are made to virtualize embedded system. In this paper, we design and implement a virtual machine monitor which divides each physical hardware resource of a embedded system into logical ones and reorganizes them into many virtual machines, which result in running several real-time operating systems concurrently on a single embedded system. We measure various performance metrics of the virtual machine monitor developed on a real embedded system. The results of the study show that our virtual machine monitor has enough potentiality of its application to real-world embedded systems.

  • Now, virtualization is no more emerging research area, and we can easily find its application in our circumstance. Nevertheless, I/O workloads are reluctant to be applied in virtual environment since they still suffer from unacceptable performance degradation due to virtualization latency. Many previous papers identified that virtual I/O overhead is mainly caused by exits and redundant I/O stack, and proposed several techniques to reduce them. However, they still have some limitations. In this paper, we introduce a novel I/O virtualization framework which improves I/O performance by exploiting multicore architecture. We applied our framework to the virtual network, and it improves TCP throughput up to 169%, and decreases UDP latency up to 38% on the network with the 10Gbps NIC.

  • As the size of the data used in the game application increase gradually, the physical resources of game server grow. Accordingly, it is necessary to/it is required to introduce I/O virtualization in game server to improve I/O performance of the server. But it is difficult to ensure high responsiveness in game server where I/O delay change from time to time. To maximize the benefit of I/O virtualization, guaranteeing I/O response time is very important and it is necessary to have I/O scheduling techniques to manage the I/O latency in the order of priority of virtual machines. In this paper, we propose an efficient delay-constrained scheduling algorithm in a virtualization environment to ensure maximum I/O latency. In addition, a reduced amount of loss of the packet was found to increase the fairness of scheduling in the experiments with the proposed scheme.

  • The current GPU virtualization techniques incur large overheads when executing application programs mainly due to the fine-grain time-sharing scheduling of the GPU among multiple Virtual Machines (VMs). Besides, the current techniques lack of portability, because they include the APIs for the GPU computations in the VM monitor. In this paper, we propose a low overhead and high performance GPU virtualization approach on a heterogeneous HPC system based on the open-source Xen. Our proposed techniques are tailored to the bio applications. In our virtualization framework, we allow a VM to solely occupy a GPU once the VM is assigned a GPU instead of relying on the time-sharing the GPU. This improves the performance of the applications and the utilization of the GPUs. Our techniques also allow a direct pass-through to the GPU by using the IOMMU virtualization features embedded in the hardware for the high portability. Experimental studies using microbiology genome analysis applications show that our proposed techniques based on the direct pass-through significantly reduce the overheads compared with the previous Domain0 based approaches. Furthermore, our approach closely matches the performance for the applications to the bare machine or rather improves the performance.
