This study proposes prediction models for the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and ultra-high-performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPC) beams using a Bayesian parameter estimation approach and a collected experimental database. Previous researchers had already proposed shear strength prediction models for SFRC and UHPC beams, but their performances were limited in terms of their prediction accuracies and the applicability to UHPC beams. Therefore, this study adopted a statistical approach based on a collected database to develop prediction models. In the database, 89 and 37 experimental data for SFRC and UHPC beams without stirrups were collected, respectively, and the proposed equations were developed using the Bayesian parameter estimation approach. The proposed models have a simplified form with important parameters, and in comparison to the existing prediction models, provide unbiased high prediction accuracy.

Estimation of daily and seasonal evaportranspiration is essential for water resource planning irrigation feasibility study, and real-time irrigation water management . This paper is to evaluate the applicability of neural networks to the estimation of evapotranspiration . A neural network was developed to forecast daily evapotranspiration of the rice crop. It is a three-layer network with input, hidden , and output layers. Back-propagation algorithm with delta learning rule was used to train the neural network. Training neural network wasconducted usign daily actural evapotranspiration of rice crop and daily climatic data such as mean temperature, sunshine hours, solar radiation, relative humidity , and pan evaporation . During the training, neural network parameters were calibrated. The trained network was applied to a set of field data not used in the training . The created response of the neural network was in good agreement with desired values. Evaluating the neural networ performance indicates that neural network may be applied to the estimation of evapotranspiration of the rice crop.
Recently, particle filters have attracted attentions for nonlinear state estimation. In this approaches, a posterior probability distribution of the state variable is evaluated based on observations in simulation using so-called importance sampling. We proposed a new filter, Evolution Strategies based particle (ESP) filter to circumvent degeneracy phenomena in the importance weights, which deteriorates the filter performance, and apply it to simultaneous state and parameter estimation of nonlinear state space models. Results of numerical simulation studies illustrate the applicability of this approach.

This paper presents a boundary element application to determine the optimal impressed current densities at defect position on the pipe line. In this protection paint, enough current must be impressed to lower the potential distribution on the metal surface to the critical values. The optimal impressed current densities are determined in order to minimize the power supply for protection. This inverse problem was formulated by employing the boundary element method. Since the system of linear equations obtained was ill-conditioned, including singular value decomposition, conjugate gradient method were applied and the accuracies of these estimation. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed method.
In this paper, an iterative array shape estimation technique is presented, which is based on the use of the least squares polynomial fitting to the data from heading sensors. The estimated polynomial shape model is then used for calculating the hydrophone positions on the assumption that the arc distances between sensors are constant. In order to verify the applicability of the proposed algorithm, numerical simulations are performed using two types of non-linear array shapes. In addition the noise effects of heading sensors on the array shape estimation results and the performance of beamformer are also investigated.

This study was performed to suggest a theoretical method of flexural capacity of 'Hybrid Beam'. Since the center of 'Hybrid Beam' is composed of embedded composite beam section, a theoretical method of embedded composite beam could be applied to estimation of flexural capacity of 'Hybrid Beam'. In this study, a theoretical evaluation method for flexural capacity of embedded composite beam, which is suggested by KBC 2005, is chosen and its applicability is evaluates as comparing theoretical results with experimental results. In results, for estimation of theoretical ultimate strength, it is proper method that both effects due to concrete and rebar are considered and whole section is assumed to be plastic. and for estimation of theoretical strength at yielding stste, it is proper to apply allowable stress design.
Though box compression strength (BCS) is commonly used as a performance criterion for shipping containers, estimating BCS remains a challenge. In this study, artificial neural networks (ANN) are implemented as a new tool, with a focus on building up ANN architectures for BCS estimation. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model can be constructed by adjusting four modeling factors: hidden neuron numbers, epochs, number of modeling cycles, and number of data points. The four factors interact with each other to influence model accuracy and can be optimized by minimizing model's Mean Squared Error (MSE). Using both data from the literature and "synthetic" data based on the McKee equation, we find that model estimation accuracy remains limited due to the uncertainty in both the input parameters and the ANN process itself. The population size to build an ANN model has been identified based on different data sets. This study provides a methodology guide for future research exploring the applicability of ANN to address problems and answer questions in the corrugated industry.

This paper is to discuss analytical techniques to estimate demand sizes and volumes that determine optimal locations for multiple facilities for a given services. While demand size estimation is a core part of location modeling to enhance solution quality and practical applicability, the estimation method has been used in limited and restrict parts such as a single population centroid in a given larger census boundary area or small theoretical application experiments(e.s. census track and enumeration district). Therefore, this paper strives to develop an analytical estimation method of demand size that converts area based demand data to point based population weighted centroids. This method is free to spatial boundary units and more robust to estimate accurate demand volumes regardless of geographic boundaries. To improve the estimation accuracy, this paper uses house weighted value to the population centroid calculation process. Then the population weighted centroids are converted to individual demand points on a grid formated surface area. In turn, the population weighted centroids, demand points and network distance measures are operated into location-allocation models to examine their roles to enhance solution quality and applicability of GIS location models. Finally, this paper demonstrates the robustness of the weighted estimation method with the application of location-allocation models.
This paper suggests the Cardioid beamforming algorithm of the doublet sensors employing DIFAR (directional frequency analysis and recording) sensor signals in the frequency domain. The algorithm enables target bearing estimation using the signals from directional sensors. The algorithm verifies its applicability by successfully estimating bearings of a target projecting ten narrow-band signals in shallow water. The estimated bearings agree very well with those from GPS (global positioning system) data. Assuming the bearings from GPS data to be real values, the estimation errors are analyzed statistically. The histogram of estimation errors in each frequency have Gaussian shape, the mean and standard deviation dropping in the ranges -1.1°∼ 6.7°and 13.3∼43.6°, respectively. Estimation errors are caused by SNR (signal to noise ratio) degradation due to propagation loss between the source and receiver, daily fluctuating geo-magnetic fields, and non-stationary background noises. If multiple DIFAR systems are employed, in addition to bearing, range information could be estimated and finally localization or tracking of a target is possible.
Because of ocean waves, swell, steering corrections, etc, the hydrophones of a towed array will not live along a straight line. However the degradation of bearing estimation performance occurs when beamforming is carried out on the hydrophone outputs of an acoustic towed array which is not straight. So it is required to estimate the shape of the array for the improved beamformer output. In this paper, an iterative array shape estimation technique is presented, which is based on the use of the least squares polynomial fitting to the data from heading sensors. The estimation error and the influence of deformations on the performance of the conventional beamformer output are investigated. Finally, the suggested method is applied to the real system in order to investigate the applicability.
