Vegetative Growth, Productivity, and Fruit Quality in Tall Spindle of 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Trees (키큰방추형 '후지'/M.9 사과나무의 영양생장, 생산성 및 과실품질)

  • Well-feathered (over 10 feathers) 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees were planted at $3.0{\times}1.0m$ and trained to slender spindle with 2.5 m height or to tall spindle with 3.5 m height, and the vegetative growth, productivity, and fruit quality of two training systems were compared for 8 years. The canopy volume of the tall spindle trees surpassed that of the slender spindle trees 4 years after planting and was 25% larger than that of the slender spindle trees 5 years after planting. The accumulated yield over 8 years for the tall spindle system was 14% higher than that of the slender spindle system. Alternate bearing and incidence of marssonina blotch were observed in both treatments after 5 years of planting. There was often vegetative imbalance in the trees however, the degree of yield loss and vegetative imbalance of the tall spindle trees was lower than those of the slender spindle trees. Soluble solid content and fruit red color of the tall spindle trees were higher than that of the slender spindle trees in 5 year after planting, resulting from increased light penetration in the canopy due to even distribution of lateral branches and from fruit bearing in different height locations of the trees. In conclusion, increasing the tree height to about 3.5 m using slender spindle 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees planted with over 333 trees per 10a led to better light penetration, yield and fruit quality compared to a conventional wide training system with the slender spindle.

Quantification of Starch Content in Apples Using Image Analysis and Its Relationships to Physicochemical Properties

  • The starch content of apples, which is related to the maturity and ripeness, was quantified by using a computer vision system. The stained area was measured by image analysis when an apple slice was stained with KI/I$_2$ solution. The ratio of stained area of the apple slice to its whole area, so called the starch index, was defined as an indicator of the starch content. When Tsugaru apples were manually sorted into immature, turing and mature groups, their starch indices were 0.374, 0.312 and 0.129, respectively. The starch index had relationships to various physicochemical properties of Tsugaru apples. At the statistically significant level of 0.1%, it was correlated with the pH value, bio-yield force, rupture force and color of intact and skin-removed apples. At the 1% significant level, it had the correlation with the density and moisture content.

Analysis of Damages and Rice Consumption by Golden Apple Snails(Pomacea canaliculata: Ampullariidae) at Growth Stages of Rice (벼 생육시기별 왕우렁이의 벼 섭식량 및 피해해석)

  • The golden apple snail was introduced to the Korea from Japan as a potential food for people in 1983. It is one of the pests of direct-seeded rice in korea. This study was conducted to investigate rice(Oriza sativa) consumption and the extent of damage by the golden apple snail(Pomacea canaliculata) in direct-sown paddy fields. Food consumption of the golden apple snail was highest at $30^{\circ}C$. When the emergence of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th leave of rice supplied food, the consumption of young(shell height 15mm) and adult golden apple snail(over shell height 30mm) at $30^{\circ}C$ were 19.0/79.8, 11.0/54.5, 5.5/18.5, and 0.0/2.0 individuals, respectively. Young rice seedings(before 5th leaves of rice) are very susceptible to golden apple snail damage because the young, tender leaves and stems favor the snail's feeding habits. The field experiment with four treatments (0, 2, 5 and 10 individuals respectively per 10 $m^2$) was carried out. The most serious yield loss was 16% from the plot with 10 adults released at emergency stage of rice.

Investigation of Residual Organochlorine Pesticides in Apple and Pear Orchard Soil and Fruit (사과 및 배 과수원의 토양 및 과실 중 잔류성유기염소계 농약류 잔류량 조사)

  • BACKGROUND: Residual organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are designated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by Stockholm Convention because they bioaccumulate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effect to human health and the environment. Apple and pear is economic crop in agriculture, and its cultivation area and yield has been increased. Therefore, we tried to investigate the OCPs residue in apple and pear orchard soils and fruits. METHODS AND RESULTS: Extraction and clean-up method were developed using the modified QuEChERS method for residual organochlorine pesticides (ROCPs) in apple and pear orchard soil and fruits. Recovery and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of ROCPs in soil and fruits were 75.4-101.4 and 76.9-93.4%, 0.03-0.21 and $0.6-1.2{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. Detected ROCPs in apple and pear orchard soil was 2,4-DDT, 4,4-DDD, 4,4-DDE, 4,4-DDT, and endosulfan sulfate, the residues were 2.2, 1.9-48.0, 1.3-84.1, 90.6-863.1, and $11.3-239.0{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. But five pesticides in all fruit samples were not detected. CONCLUSION: These results showed that ROCPs residues in apple and pear orchard soil had no effect on safety of agricultural products.

Extraction of Pectin from Apple Pomace with Protopectinase produced by Bacillus subtilis IFO 12113 (Bacillus subtilis IFO 12113 유래 Protopectinase 를 이용산 사과박의 펙틴 추출)

  • For effective utilization of apple pomace, protopectinase(PPase) produced from Bacillus subtilis IFO 12113 was used for pectin extraction from apple pomace. Optimal conditions for enzyme treatment were found at $60^{\circ}$, pH 7.8, 48 hours with 20 : 1 ratio of substrate to enzyme. The yield of extracted pectin from water-alcohol insoluble pectin by enzyme at optimal condition was 34.3%. The purity and methoxyl content of extracted pectin by PPase at optimal condition were measured as 52.9% and 2.75%, respectively. Intrinsic viscosity and average molecular weight of extracted pectin by enzymatic method were 0.178 ml/g and $4.9{\times}10^3$, respectively.

Influence of Time of Hand-thining on Bitter Pit Incidence and Fruit Quality in 'Gamhong'/M.9 Apple Trees (인력 적과 시기가 '감홍'/M.9 사과나무의 고두증상 발생과 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of time of hand-thinning on vegetative growth, bitter pit incidence, fruit quality, and return bloom in 'Gamhong'/M.9 apple trees. The time of hand-thinning were 3, 5, 7 and 9 weeks after full bloom, and the primary thinning (leaving only the king fruit on cluster) and secondary thinning (adjusting crop load) were conducted at the same time. The time of hand-thinning was correlated to the vegetative growth, average fruit wight, yield, soluble solids content, bitter pit incidence, and return bloom, negatively, and to the yield of middle grade fruits (fruit weight was 250-299g and none pit on fruit surface) per tree, calcium contents of leaves, and fruit red color, positively. There was no significant effect of time of hand-thinning on fruit firmness, titratable acidity, and total incomes per tree. In conclusion, if the time of hand-thinning of 'Gamhong'/M.9 apple tree was completed at 9 weeks after full bloom, it could produce about 300g of high-quality fruit without bitter pit.

Relationship between the Incidence of Bitter pit and the Application Level of Crushed Oyster Shell in Apple Orchard (굴껍질 시비수준이 사과 고두병 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • For enhancement of apple productivity, the calcium fertilizers to increase the calcium content of fruit, and reduce the incidence of bitter pit in apples are applied. Crushed oyster shell contains a plenty of calcium carbonate, and a very small amount of boron, ferrous, and manganese. A field study was conducted to determine the optimum level of crushed oyster shell for soil nutrient management, and its effect on the induction of bitter pit in cultivar 'Gamhong' apple. The application of crushed oyster shell increased organic matter, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation concentration in soil. We found a significant positive correlation between soil pH, and application level of crushed oyster shell in both top, and subsoils. The incidence of bitter pit in apple fruit at the harvest stage was significantly higher in non treatment and calciummagnesium carbonate treatment than on over applications 4 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for crushed oyster shell. However, the optimum level of crushed oyster shell was 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$, especially considering the soil Ca content, soil pH, fruits weight, and yield. Our results show that the crushed oyster shell can be effective in restoring the soil nutrient balance, and inducing the bitter pit in apple fruit.

Proper Tree Vigor and Crop Load in High Density Planting System for 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Trees (사과 '후지'/M.9 밀식 사과원의 성과기 적정 결실 및 수세 기준)

  • Proper tree vigor and crop load were determined for 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees in high density planting system from 2001 to 2003. Leaf/fruit ratio was highly correlated to mean fruit weight (y=1.715x+205.02, $R^2=0.66^{**}$) and yield (y=-35.l56x+5963.7, $R^2=0.44^{**}$). In addition, there was a significant correlation between the number of leaves per tree and mean fruit weight. However, crop load did not affect tree growth, soluble solids content of fruit, and Hunter a value. To harvest the fruits heavier than 300 g without biennial bearing, it was appropriate to crop 55 to 64 fruits in a tree with 55 leaves per fruit of adult tree. The good indices for proper tree vigor could be 20 to 25 cm of mean shoot length and above 95% of shoot termination rate. Moreover, no secondary growth and 20 to 30% of spur formation could be the indices for highly productive tree vigor.

  • A mycotoxin Patulin, isolated from apple juice medium cultured with Penicillium patulum NRRL5259, was purified through acid aluminum column using ethyl ether as eluent. The yield of purified patulin crystal was 3mg/ml culture medium after 8 days of shaking culture at 28C. The growth rate of Escherichia coli K12JM103 infected with bacteriophage M13 was decreased by patulin at the concentration range of 1Mug/ml to 10Mu/nl. ED50 of patulin for the bacterial growth was 4.5Mug/ml and 10Mug/ml of patulin caused maximum inhibitory effect (60% inhibition) on the growth.
