Apple is most favorable fruit in Korea, and apple farmland has been increased before and after the agreements of Uruguay Round and apple is considered as one of strategic agricultural goods. Especially expansion of apple farmland is concentrated in Kyungpook region because of the suitable climate and its market share is about 70 percents in 1992. But in tree age of apple, although newly and replanting area is increasing, the rate of old orchards is higher than that of other regions. In varieties of apple, it is concentrated in Fuji and is forecasted to increase in the future. The amount of apple production of Kyungpook region is 480 thousand tons, that is concentrated in Wui-sung, Young-ju and An-dong. The quantity of apple production per 10a. is 1,315kg, that is low level compared with that of America and Japan, and the gap of technology among farmers is heavily. The difficulties of apple farming in Kyungpook region are summarized as follows. first, the lack of mechanization and facilities due to the small scale of farmland, second, lack of rural labor force, third, concentration on Fuji apple varieties, fourth, low productivity of apple farming.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to investigate the possibility for application in identification of apple cultivars. Three apple cultivars ‘Kamhong, Hwahong, and Fuji’ produced in Korea were scanned over the range of 1100-2500nm using NIRS (Infra Alzer 500). Two types of samples were used for scanning; one was apple with skin and the other was apple without skin. For cultivar identification, the NIR absorbance spectrums were analyzed by qualitative calibration in “Sesame” analysis program, and the various influence properties such as sugar contents, acidity, color, firmness, and micro-structure were compared in scanned samples. The ‘Kamhong’ cultivar could be identified from ‘Hwahong’ and ‘Fuji’ cultivars using the cluster model analysis. The test samples in calibration between ‘Kamhong’ and ‘Fuji’ cultivars could be completely identified. The test samples in calibration between ‘Kamhong’ and ‘Hwahong’ cultivars could be identified most of all. But, ‘Hwahong’ and ‘Fuji’ cultivars could not be quite classified each other. The apple skin influenced the identification process of apple cultivars. The samples without skin were more difficult to classify in calibration than the samples with skin. The physicochemical properties of apple cultivars showed like the result of identification in calibration using NIRS. Some physicochemical properties of ‘Kamhong’ cultivar were different from those of the other cultivars. Those of ‘Hwahong’ and ‘Fuji’ cultivars showed. similar to each other. The sucrose contents of ‘Kamhong’ cultivar were higher and the fructose contents and firmness of skin and flesh were lower than those of the others. The hypodermis layer of skin in ‘Kamhong’ cultivar was thinner than those of the others. In this studies, the identification of all apple cultivars by NIRS was not quite accurate because of the physicochemical properties which were different in the same cultivar, and inconsistent patterns by culivars in some properties. To solve these problems in NIRS application for apple cultivar identification, further study should be focused on the use of peculiar properties among the apple cultivars.
This study was designed to develop non-thermal pasteurized fresh apple juice by applying pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment. The effect of non-thermal PEF treatment on physicochemical and sensory properties of apple juice was examined by measuring changes in vitamin C contents, colors, flavors and sensory properties. Color of PEF and heat treated apple juices was not significantly different from each other. Vitamin C content of PEF treated apple juice was close to that of fresh apple juice, but was much higher than that of heat treated apple juice. Heat treated apple juice lost 70% of flavor components, whereas PEF-treated apple juice lost only 15%. Sensory scores of PEF treated apple juice were significantly higher than heat-treated one in flavor, taste and overall acceptability. In conclusion, PEF treated apple juice had superior physico-chemical and sensory properties to heat-treated one.

The occurrence of postharvest disease of apple was surveyed from 1995 to 1997 in the major apple-producing area in Korea. Ten genera including Alternaria spp., Botryosphaeria dothidea, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium spp., and Penicillium spp. were isolated from the decayed apple fruits. Of these, B. cinerea, Penicillium spp. and Fusarium spp. were frequently isolated and were highly pathogenic to apple fruits. Optimum temperature of mycelial growth for Penicillium spp. ranged from 10 to $30^{\circ}C$ and that of mycelial growth for B. cinerea and Alternaria spp. ranged from 5 to $30^{\circ}C$. Optimum temperature of sporulation of Penicillium spp. and Alternaria spp. ranged $15{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$, respectively. Occurrence of postharvest disease of apple increased in neglecting selection of wounded fruits before storing apples. Most of these fungi causing postharvest diseases such as Penicillium spp, Botrytis cinerea and Alternaria spp. were isolated from healthy fruits sampled at apple orchard. These results suggested that posthavest diseases of apple were originated from apple fruits contaminated from apple orchard and occurred during storage. In addition, five fungicides including prochloraz EC, fenari EC, captan WP, benomyl WP and folpet WP suppressed posthavest diseases when they sprayed on apple fruits at 30 days before harvesting.

The effectiveness of plant-based attractants was studied using large traps, which attracted relatively more snails in agricultural water drainage ditches and rice-cultivating environments, although their effectiveness in rice fields and lakes was limited. The rate began to rise after three hours of observation. Watermelon peel exhibited the highest apple snail attraction rate (13.8%), followed by potatoes (10.0%), and apple peel (8.8%). These values significantly differed from the attraction rate attributed to papaya leaves (F=3.84; P=0.0387). After 24 h, watermelon peel and apple peel indicated a higher rate of attraction (23.4% and 21.7%, respectively), which were significantly different compared with those of papaya leaves and potatoes (F=9.94; P=0.00455). Large bait traps outperformed funnel traps in capturing golden apple snails and trapped a significant number of snails measuring over 1 cm in size. Watermelon peel was the most effective attractant for a large bait trap, followed by apple peel, potatoes, and papaya leaves. On average, 110 snails were captured in the lure net. However, potatoes, apple peels, and papaya leaves caught an average of 93, 80, and 79 snails, respectively. Among the attractants, the lure effect of the snails was not significantly different. The efficiency of large bait traps in capturing snails, regardless of the plant attractant employed, followed the order: apple peel > watermelon peel and potatoes > papaya leaves > melon > Korean melon. Watermelon peel is highly recommended for farmer use, as well as apple peel and potatoes. Utilizing these snail attractants may contribute positively to developing a safe and environment-friendly integrated pest management strategy.
Technology standards have gained importance as global market becomes more competitive. Since a technology acknowledged as a standard brings significant benefits to the developer firm, firms in the IT industry tend to pursue standardization for the technology, being it proprietary or open. However, the paths or strategic implications are seldom discussed in academia. Therefore, our study uses iPhone of Apple, one of the proprietary standards successes, to further understand corporate strategies over two standard choices. Our case study suggests that iPhone's entry timing was optimal for creating a new mobile environment. Design excellence and user-friendly interface increased networking effects and switching costs among consumers. Apple developed independent mobile operating system (iOS) through improvement on the existing operating system. During the process, Apple chose proprietary standard and, by installing the same UX on its sibling products such as iPod Touch or iPad, overcame the subsequent problems that might arise from the limited use of iOS. Based on the capability of concurrently developing both hardware and software, Apple connected operating system, machine, and contents, which deems to contribute to its proprietary standards success. We argue that this strategy should be considered for firms which plan proprietary standard strategy.
This experiment was conducted to observe the changes of composition of atmosphere in storage room by controlled ventilation under normal and sub-atmospheric conditions, and the biochemical changes in apple texture under these conditions. The results were as follows; 1) By controlled ventilation, concentration of carbon dioxide in storage room was optionally regulated and constantly maintained. 2) Among compositions of internal atmosphere of apple, especially, concentration of ethylene was much decreased at apple stored under sub-atmospheric condition than that stored under normal atmospheric condition. 3) Acidity of apple stored under sub-atmospheric condition was much greater than that of apple stored under normal atmospheric condition. 4) Respiratory quotients of apple, which was stored under normal and sub-atmospheric conditions, were shown to be high. But decarboxylation of added pyruvate was found more active in slices prepared from apple stored under sub-atmospheric condition.
The purpose of this study was to enhance the quality of kochujang Apple juice was added to traditional Kochujang at 0%, 20%, 40%, 60 and 80%. Physicochemical and microbial characteristics were periodically investigated during at room temperature during a 90 day fermentation period. The moisture content of the apple Kochujang was higher than that of the control, while the salt content of the apple Kochujang was lower than that of the control, At first, the sweetness of the apple Kochujang showed no significant difference from the control; however, its sweetness increased during the 90 days. In all treatments, the pH value decreased during the fermentation period, while the titratable acidity increased during the fermentation period. Viscosity decreased greatly after 30 days. Sugar reduction was higher in the apple Kochujang than in the control, and its concentration increased with apple juice content. According to the analysis of free sugar, glucose, fructose, and maltose had an especially high ratio in the apple Kochujang. The organic acids detected in Kochujang were citric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid and lactic acids. The content of citric acid and malic acid were higher than the other acids in the apple Kochujang. L, a, and b values generally decreased during the fermentation period. When the Kochujang was made, the number of the total viable cells was $10^7\;CFU/g$. At room temperature, the number steadily increased up to the 30th day, then steadily decreased on the 90th day. After that, there was no significant change. The number of yeasts was $10^6\;CFU/g$ at the end of the 90th day. After the 90th day of fermentation, sensory results showed that the 60~80% apple juice Kochujang showed the best taste, appearance, texture, and overall quality.
The patent war between Apple and Samsung which started in the year of 2011 presents us a good example of a multifaceted technological strategies, frequently found in high-tech industries. The patent litigation represents a competitive structure, while the patent citation of counterpart's technology demonstrates the underlying cooperative relationship between two leading firms in smart-phone industry. However, the previous studies have mostly concentrated on one aspect in inter-firm relationship, providing only a partial aspect of technological management issues often faced by high-tech companies today. We also have a limited understanding on the technological trajectory or how the core technology evolve over time in high-tech industry where technological knowledge is the main source of competitive advantage. To overcome the drawbacks in the previous studies, we examine the coopetitive nature of inter-organizational relationship with simultaneous perspectives of competition and cooperation in smart-phone industry. To this end, this study analyzes patent-litigation for revealing the competitive nature and patent-citation network for the cooperative nature by utilizing patent citation data. By doing so, we identify the specific patterns of technological knowledge flows and the direction of technological strategy and the relevant policy under the circumstance of coopetition ecosystem.
